Abstract The ancients highlight taking off the needle slowly. From aspects of proper timing of withdrawing the needle, the safe treatment, treating and keeping the spirit, dealing with the acupuncture accidents, reinforcing and reducing manipulation and strengthening the post-needling sensation, etc. advantages of taking off the needle slowly are described in this paper. So the taking off the needle slowly is worthwhile in clinic.

Abstract Through retrieving of literature relevant to LIU Zhang-jie, his practicing and teaching experience in Quanzhou city are investigated, and his modern education thoughts are summarized in this article as well. It is found that LIU attached great importance on both apprenticeship and classroom teaching; he highlighted the theory of meridians and the classic of Treaties on Febrile Diseases; recommending selection of less points, and focusing on finger force during practice, he prefered to combine acupuncture with materia medica. He was practical and realistic, and never hide his mistakes. He also brought along and passed his ideas of acupuncture teach to his students. The medical ethic of SUN Si-miao was the one he advocated. He also spared no effort to write books and teach materials which played important roles in the spread of Chengjiang Acupuncture School.

Abstract The development courses of acupuncture and moxibustion as well as the present situation, education and legislation in Portugal were reviewed in this article. Acupuncture and Moxibustion has been developed in Portugal since 1980's. The first acupuncture school appeared in the year of 1992. Until now, courses on Chinese medicine and acupuncture has already been set up in about six universities. Acupuncture legislation started in the year 2003. At present, professional levels of acupuncture practitioners vary a lot. There are over 50 indications currently. And acupuncture treatment is basically at one's own expense.

Abstract The development history, education, legislation, charge and institutes of acupuncture and moxibustion in Singapore are introduced in this article. Acupuncture and moxibustion has been developed in Singapore since 1840. Nowadays there are three universities that set up standard Chinese medicine courses and two acupuncture-moxibustion associations. Legislation of acupuncture and moxibustion is published in 2000. The acupuncture and moxibustion is applied for approximately 50 kinds of diseases. The acupuncture and moxibustion is at one's own expense in public or private institutions, but cheap or completely free in charity.

Abstract Through consultation of the historical literatures on Mr. CHEN Ying-long, investigating his teaching experiences in Xiamen Hospital of TCM and Xiamen University, the characteristics of his educational idea on acupuncture-moxibustion, are found as follows: great significance is found in the dissemination of Chengjiang acupuncture school in Minnan area of China and abroad through the combination of the succession of education from a masters to disciples and the classroom teaching; importance is attached to medical ethics, and priority is put on building up ethics and teaching by precept and example. In order to inherit the Chengjiang acupuncture school, Mr. CHEN focuses on fostering a proper studying method, emphasizes on the basic skills of acupuncture, reinforces clinical practice and techniques, edits books, and imparts knowledge and solves doubts.

Abstract The backward Lagrangian stochastic (BLS) model and open-path tunable diode laser (OPTDL) analyzer were used to monitor ammonia (NH₃) emissions from urea applied to winter wheat in the North China Plain. The high-temporal resolution measurements of ammonia concentrations provided an opportunity for estimating the diel patterns of ammonia emissions, as well as valuable information about the factors that influence NH₃ emissions. The results showed both large diel variability and daily variability in NH₃ volatilization, with NH₃ emissions highest during the daytime. The diel pattern of ammonia volatilization depended mainly on the diel variation of wind speed and soil temperature, while the overall pattern of NH₃ loss was strongly affected by soil moisture content, soil NH₄ ⁺-N concentration, wind speed and soil temperature. At the end of the measurement period, the cumulative NH₃ loss was 12.21–16.43 kg N ha⁻¹, calculated based on different time scale average Q BLS. Due to sensitivity of the OPTDL analyzer, the estimated total ammonia loss was still doubtful in this study.

Abstract Soil water drainage and nitrogen leaching in Tianranwenyanqu Basin was simulated using DNDC model. The model was validated by data of the water and nitrogen controlling experiment in the basin. The correlation coefficients between simulated and measured values of daily 1 m soil water storage, lower boundary NO3(-) -N concentration, soil water drainage and nitrogen leaching were 0.94 (n = 40), 0.66 (n = 49), 0.89 (n =40), 0.94 (n = 39); and RMSEs were 15.66 mm, 2.66 mg x kg(-1), 9.00 mm, 0.94 kg x hm(-2), respectively. The validated model was then used to simulate soil water drainage and nitrogen leaching in the basin. The results show that, under multi-year average climate and conventional management condition, annual soil water drainage and nitrogen leaching of winter-wheat and summer-corn rotation fields in this basin were 220-327 mm and 73.1-100.6 kg x hm(-2), respectively. The distribution of water drainage and nitrogen leaching were uneven in time and space, leaching happened mainly after fertilization, irrigation or heavy rainfall, and sandy soil regions were the most serious nitrogen leaching area. Unreasonable irrigation, fertilization and poor water and fertilizer preserving capability of the soils, were the major causes of soil water drainage and nitrogen leaching.

Abstract A viable method—open-path tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (OPTDL) in conjunction with a backward Lagrangian stochastic (bLS) dispersion model—has been used for micrometeorological monitoring of ammonia fluxes. In this technique, the gas concentration measured with the OPTDL sensor is used to infer the surface emission rate with the aid of dispersion model calculations. On the basis of numerous assessment experiments and field trials, several beneficial strategies for using the OPTDL technique properly to monitor atmospheric NH₃ concentrations in the field have been summarized. Theoretically, the location of the concentration measurement can be anywhere in the emission plume, but in practice, the concentration measurement position must be carefully selected to avoid making measurements which are on the periphery of the downwind plume or are affected by obstructions. To obtain accurate estimates, periods with low friction velocity or extreme atmospheric stability, where Monin–Obukhov similarity theory-based relationships are invalid, or unrepresentative estimates due to unsuitable wind direction, should be excluded. A validation experiment showed that there was no significant difference between the ammonia emission rates obtained by the micrometeorological mass balance method and those obtained by the bLS model combined with the OPTDL technique. This study also indicated the potential of the bLS and OPTDL technique for investigation of diurnal emission patterns and environmental influences.
