Abstract Spontaneous intramural esophageal dissection (IED) is a rare disease entity. There are few reports of spontaneous IED requiring surgical treatment. Hereby, we report a 37-year-old gentleman who was diagnosed to have spontaneous extensive circumferential IED complicated with esophageal perforation, empyema, and esophageal-pleural fistula. Esophageal stenting and drainage of empyema were unsuccessful. Computed tomography and gastrografin contrast swallow demonstrated a leak to the pleural cavity, suggestive of esophageal-pleural fistula. Subsequently, a two-stage operation was performed: cervical esophagogastrostomy to bypass the perforated esophagus, followed by esophagectomy and decortication of the right lung. The patient recovered and was discharged home after a 3-week hospitalization. The management principles and recent published literature related to IED were reviewed.

Abstract Aerobic granules efficient at degrading methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) were successfully developed in a well-mixed sequencing batch reactor (SBR). Treatment efficiency of MTBE in the reactor during the stable operations exceeded 99.8%, and effluent MTBE was consistently below 800 microg/L. The specific MTBE degradation rate was observed to increase with increasing MTBE initial concentrations from 25 to 400 mg/L, peaked at 18.2 mg-MTBE/g-VSS h, and declined with further increases in MTBE concentration as substrate inhibition effects became significant. There was a good fit between these biodegradation data and the Haldane equation (R (2) = 0.976). Microbial community DNA profiling was carried out using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of polymerase chain reaction amplified 16S rDNA. The aerobic granule was found to contain a wide diversity of microorganisms. More than 70% similarity among the samples in the time period examined indicated a highly stable microbial community as the reactor reached the stable operation.

Abstract ADAM15 (A Disintegrin And Metalloproteinase 15), a transmembrane protein containing seven domains, interacts with some integrins via its disintegrin domain and overexpresses in many solid tumors. In this study, the effect of the recombinant human disintegrin domain (rhddADAM15) on the proliferation and migration of Bel-7402 cells was evaluated in vitro and in vivo in zebrafish xenografts. rhddADAM15 (4 μM) severely inhibited the proliferation and migration of Bel-7402 cells, inducing a partial G2/S arrest and morphological nucleus changes of apoptosis. Moreover, the activity of caspases 8, 9 and 3 in Bel-7402 cells was increased. In addition, the zebrafish was used as a model for apoptosis-induction and tumor-xenograft. rhddADAM15 (1 pM) inhibited the growth and metastasis of Bel-7402 cell xenografts in zebrafish and a lower concentration (0.1 pM) induced severe apoptosis in the somatic cells of zebrafish. In conclusion, our data identified rhddADAM15 as a potent inhibitor of tumor growth and metastasis, making it a promising tool for use in anticancer treatment.

Abstract In this study, a monoclonal antibody to the terminal oxidase of the alternative pathway from Sauromatum guttatum was used to detect the expression of alternative oxidase (AOX) protein in tomato mitochondria. The results show that there was an obvious correlation between the ethylene-induced apoptosis and the levels of AOX protein in tomato cells undergoing ethylene-induced apoptosis. In addition, when tomato protoplasts were preincubated with 2 mM salicylhydroxamic acid (SHAM), an inhibitor of the alternative pathway, before their exposure to ethylene, the TUNEL positive reaction and DNA fragmentation were obviously accelerated. We suggest that AOX may play an important role in protecting tomato protoplasts against ethylene-induced apoptosis.

Abstract Apoptosis induced by high concentrations of nicotinamide in tobacco suspension cells was observed. When cells were treated with 250 mM nicotinamide for 24 h, the hallmarks of apoptosis were detected, including DNA fragments increasing in size by multiples of 180-200 bp, condensation and peripheral distribution of nuclei chromatin and positive reaction to the TUNEL assay. In addition, the degradation of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) was also detected. This indicates that caspase-3-like activity is involved in apoptosis in cultured tobacco cells induced by high-concentration nicotinamide. However, as an inhibitor of PARP, nicotinamide has a contrary effect on apoptosis at low concentrations, which suggests that nicotinamide plays a dual role depending on to its concentration in cells.
