Abstract Objective: The incidence of neuroendocrine tumors (NET) has been increasing globally for several decades. The objective of the study was to examine the most recent trend in the incidence of NET as well as disparities by sex and race/ethnicity in adults in the USA.
Methods: Patients with NET aged ≥20 years were identified from the SEER 22 Registries from 2000 to 2020. The age-adjusted incidence rate was calculated for overall NET and by primary site. The incidence trend was assessed by annual percent change. Disparities by sex and race/ethnicity were examined using the incidence rate ratio.
Results: Age-adjusted incidence rate of overall NET in adults was 9.39 per 100 000 in 2000-2020. The incidence rate increased from 2000 but reached a plateau with no significant change since 2015. The lung and bronchus, small intestine, and rectum were the most common primary sites. Sex and racial/ethnic disparities in NET incidence varied by primary sites. For example, there was a female excess in NET of the lung and bronchus, stomach, and appendix; and there was a male excess in the small intestine, pancreas, colon, rectum and other/unknown NET. Compared to non-Hispanic white, non-Hispanic black had higher incidences of stomach, small intestine, liver, pancreas, colon, rectum, and other/unknown NET; they had lower incidences of lung and bronchus, and appendix NET than non-Hispanic white.
Conclusion: Age-adjusted incidence rate of overall NET has reached a plateau since 2015. However, there were sex and racial/ethnic disparities in such incidence, which varied depending on the primary site of NET.

  4. Article ; Online: Metalloproteases in gonad formation and ovulation.

Abstract Changes in expression or activation of various metalloproteases including matrix metalloproteases (Mmp), a disintegrin and metalloprotease (Adam) and a disintegrin and metalloprotease with thrombospondin motif (Adamts), and their endogenous inhibitors (tissue inhibitors of metalloproteases, Timp), have been shown to be critical for ovulation in various species from studies in past decades. Some of these metalloproteases such as Adamts1, Adamts9, Mmp2, and Mmp9 have also been shown to be regulated by luteinizing hormone (LH) and/or progestin, which are essential triggers for ovulation in all vertebrate species. Most of these metalloproteases also express broadly in various tissues and cells including germ cells and somatic gonad cells. Thus, metalloproteases likely play roles in gonad formation processes comprising primordial germ cell (PGC) migration, development of germ and somatic cells, and sex determination. However, our knowledge on the functions and mechanisms of metalloproteases in these processes in vertebrates is still lacking. This review will summarize our current knowledge on the metalloproteases in ovulation and gonad formation with emphasis on PGC migration and germ cell development.

Abstract Introduction: Extant studies have demonstrated the relationship between naturalness and healthiness, and the effectiveness of various food labels in influencing consumers' perception of food and subsequent food choices. However, little attention has been given to food producer labels.
Methods: Drawing on Stimulation-Organism-Response theory, the current study explored the causal relationship between food producer labels and consumers' food choices. Three studies (562 participants) were employed to test the main effect, the mediating effect, and the moderating effect.
Results: The results showed that: (1) food producer label could influence consumers' food choice, that is, produced-by-farmer label (vs. produced-by-enterprise label vs. control group) could significantly increase consumers' food choices, while there is no significant difference between produced-by-enterprise label and control group. (2) Perceived naturalness and standardization perception mediate the effects on consumers' food choices of food producer labels. (3) Food processing level moderates the effect of food producer label on consumers' food choices.
Discussion: The current study enriches the research of food label and food choice, expands the application of Stimulation-Organism-Response theory in consumer behavior, and provides some practical suggestions for consumers, enterprise and policy-maker. Various kinds of experiments (online and offline) enhanced the conclusions' ecological validity. Finally, the limitations and future research are discussed.
