Abstract Partial least squares (PLS) is a dimensionality reduction technique introduced in the field of chemometrics and successfully employed in many other areas. The PLS components are obtained by maximizing the covariance between linear combinations of the regressors and of the target variables. In this work, we focus on its application to scalar regression problems. PLS regression consists in finding the least squares predictor that is a linear combination of a subset of the PLS components. Alternatively, PLS regression can be formulated as a least squares problem restricted to a Krylov subspace. This equivalent formulation is employed to analyze the distance between ${\hat{\boldsymbol\beta}\;}_{\mathrm{PLS}}^{\scriptscriptstyle {(L)}}$, the PLS estimator of the vector of coefficients of the linear regression model based on $L$ PLS components, and $\hat{\boldsymbol \beta}_{\mathrm{OLS}}$, the one obtained by ordinary least squares (OLS), as a function of $L$. Specifically, ${\hat{\boldsymbol\beta}\;}_{\mathrm{PLS}}^{\scriptscriptstyle {(L)}}$ is the vector of coefficients in the aforementioned Krylov subspace that is closest to $\hat{\boldsymbol \beta}_{\mathrm{OLS}}$ in terms of the Mahalanobis distance with respect to the covariance matrix of the OLS estimate. We provide a bound on this distance that depends only on the distribution of the eigenvalues of the regressor covariance matrix. Numerical examples on synthetic and real-world data are used to illustrate how the distance between ${\hat{\boldsymbol\beta}\;}_{\mathrm{PLS}}^{\scriptscriptstyle {(L)}}$ and $\hat{\boldsymbol \beta}_{\mathrm{OLS}}$ depends on the number of clusters in which the eigenvalues of the regressor covariance matrix are grouped.

Abstract Calcified nodules (CNs) represent the least common cause of acute coronary syndrome. Furthermore, case reports describing CNs as the underlying cause for ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction are exceptional. We present a patient with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction caused by a CN and outline the corresponding diagnostic angiographic and intracoronary imaging findings.

Abstract Calcified neoatherosclerosis represents a particularly challenging scenario in patients with in-stent restenosis (ISR), frequently associated with worse angiographic and optical coherence tomography (OCT) results compared with other patients with typical ISR. Intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) has emerged as a safe and effective technology to circumferentially modify calcium in heavily calcified coronary lesions. Preliminary data also suggest its usefulness in calcified neoatheroscerosis. This case report aims to describe a novel fracture pattern after IVL identified by OCT (the "rock strata peeling pattern") in patients presenting with ISR due to calcified neoatherosclerosis.

Abstract Infective endocarditis (IE) is a rare but serious complication following transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Despite substantial improvements in the TAVR procedure (less invasive) and its expansion to younger and healthier patients, the incidence of IE after TAVR remains stable, with incidence rates similar to those reported after surgical aortic valve replacement. Although IE after TAVR is recognized as a subtype of prosthetic valve endocarditis, this condition represents a particularly challenging scenario given its unique clinical and microbiological profile, the high incidence of IE-related complications, the uncertain role of cardiac surgery, and the dismal prognosis in most patients with TAVR-IE. The number of TAVR procedures is expected to grow exponentially in the coming years, increasing the number of patients at risk of developing this life-threatening complication. Therefore, a detailed understanding of this disease and its complications will be essential to improve clinical outcomes.

Abstract Introduction: Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is a rare but well-recognized cause of acute coronary syndrome, especially important in women. Invasive coronary angiography (ICA) is the fundamental diagnostic technique for the confirmation of SCAD. Knowing the angiographic patterns suggestive of SCAD is essential for the correct identification of patients with this entity.
Areas covered: In this narrative review, the main angiographic characteristics of SCAD lesions as detected by ICA are presented and discussed.
Expert opinion: In addition to the specific angiographic classification of SCAD, several authors have described complementary angiographic patterns suggestive of SCAD. Knowledge and correct identification of these angiographic patterns is essential for the correct diagnosis of patients with clinical suspicion of SCAD.
