Abstract Neurodegenerative diseases are one of the leading causes of death, disability and dependency worldwide. Since the etiology of these complex pathologies is not completely known, the available therapeutic options can only cause temporary relief of the symptoms, but cannot cure them. Life-changing therapeutic solutions are urgently needed, as the number of people suffering from these pathologies has been increasing quickly over the last few decades. Recent studies regarding the paradigm of using multitarget compounds to treat both Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases have been analyzed and included in the review entitled

Abstract Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease are the most prevalent neurodegenerative diseases and the leading causes of dementia worldwide. The etiology of these multifactorial pathologies is not completely known. The available therapeutic approaches can cause temporary relief of symptoms but cannot slow down their progression or cure them. Life-changing therapeutic solutions are urgently needed, as the number of people suffering from these pathologies has been increasing quickly over the last few decades. Several targets are being studied, and innovative approaches are being pursued to find new therapeutic options. This overview is focused on the most recent information regarding the paradigm of using multitarget compounds to treat both Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

Abstract Technology-facilitated sexual abuse refers to the use of information and communication technologies to facilitate both virtual and in-person sexual crimes. Research on this topic has focused on rates, risk factors, and consequences. This scoping review aims to understand whether and how forensic psychological procedures are adapted to assess adolescent victims and how Internet-based information might be useful as complementary data. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extensions for Scoping Reviews guidelines, searches were conducted in April 2023 in five electronic databases to include Portuguese, Spanish, or English quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-method peer-reviewed studies. Of the 2523 studies, six were considered eligible. Identified procedures include forensic interviews following the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development Protocol, and risk and trauma assessments. While discussing technology's role in abuse during interviews was informative, confronting adolescents with evidence of their abuse had adverse effects on their testimony and recovery. The assessment tools often had a narrow focus or overlooked the abuse unless explicitly disclosed, implied a referral, or when safeguarding concerns were raised. Clinical, forensic, and criminal implications are elaborated.

Abstract Background: Electronic Health Records (EHRs) aggregate diverse information at the patient level, holding a trajectory representative of the evolution of the patient health status throughout time. Although this information provides context and can be leveraged by physicians to monitor patient health and make more accurate prognoses/diagnoses, patient records can contain information from very long time spans, which combined with the rapid generation rate of medical data makes clinical decision making more complex. Patient trajectory modelling can assist by exploring existing information in a scalable manner, and can contribute in augmenting health care quality by fostering preventive medicine practices (e.g. earlier disease diagnosis).
Methods: We propose a solution to model patient trajectories that combines different types of information (e.g. clinical text, standard codes) and considers the temporal aspect of clinical data. This solution leverages two different architectures: one supporting flexible sets of input features, to convert patient admissions into dense representations; and a second exploring extracted admission representations in a recurrent-based architecture, where patient trajectories are processed in sub-sequences using a sliding window mechanism.
Results: The developed solution was evaluated on two different clinical outcomes, unexpected patient readmission and disease progression, using the publicly available Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC)-III clinical database. The results obtained demonstrate the potential of the first architecture to model readmission and diagnoses prediction using single patient admissions. While information from clinical text did not show the discriminative power observed in other existing works, this may be explained by the need to fine-tune the clinicalBERT model. Finally, we demonstrate the potential of the sequence-based architecture using a sliding window mechanism to represent the input data, attaining comparable performances to other existing solutions.
Conclusion: Herein, we explored DL-based techniques to model patient trajectories and propose two flexible architectures that explore patient admissions on an individual and sequence basis. The combination of clinical text with other types of information led to positive results, which can be further improved by including a fine-tuned version of clinicalBERT in the architectures. The proposed solution can be publicly accessed at https://github.com/bioinformatics-ua/PatientTM.

Abstract Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) causes necrotizing encephalitis, usually located in the temporal lobes and with a high mortality rate if not diagnosed and treated early. Cranial computed tomography (CT) scan, although not very sensitive, can help by highlighting hemorrhagic foci and edema in the frontotemporal lobes, given the tropism of the virus for these areas. We present the case of a 70-year-old male who came to the emergency department (ED) with fever and confusion. Despite an unclear cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) result, the CT scan showed a spot of hypodensity in the mesial aspect of the left temporal lobe. He was given 21 days of intravenous acyclovir, and his neurological condition normalized. These cranial CT alterations, although not pathognomonic, indicate a strong suspicion of herpetic encephalitis.
