    Abstract Powder injection molding is an established, cost effective and often near-net-shape mass production process for metal or ceramic parts with complex geometries. This paper deals with the extension of the powder injection molding process chain towards the usage of a commercially available borosilicate glass and the realization of glass compounds with huge densities. The whole process chain consists of the individual steps of compounding, molding, debinding, and sintering. The first part, namely, the search for a suitable feedstock composition with a very high solid load and reliable molding properties, is mandatory for the successful manufacture of a dense glass part. The most prominent feature is the binder composition and the related comprehensive rheological characterization. In this work, a binder system consisting of polyethylene glycol and polymethylmethacrylate with stearic acid as a surfactant was selected and its suitability for glass injection molding was evaluated. The influence of all feedstock components on processing and of the process steps on the final sintered part was investigated for sintered glass parts with densities around 99% of the theoretical value.

    Abstract Nanoparticles have many advantages as active materials, such as a short diffusion length, low charge transfer resistance, or a reduced probability of cracking. However, their low packing density makes them unsuitable for commercial battery applications. Hierarchically structured microparticles are synthesized from nanoscale primary particles by targeted aggregation. Due to their open accessible porosity, they retain the advantages of nanomaterials but can be packed much more densely. However, the intrinsic porosity of the secondary particles leads to limitations in processing properties and increases the overall porosity of the electrode, which must be balanced against the improved rate stability and increased lifetime.     Abstract The rising demand for high-performing batteries requires new technological concepts. To facilitate fast charge and discharge, hierarchically structured electrodes offer short diffusion paths in the active material. However, there are still gaps in understanding the influences on the cell performance of such electrodes. Here, we employed a cell model to demonstrate that the morphology of the hierarchically structured electrode determines which electrochemical processes dictate the cell performance. The potentially limiting processes include electronic conductivity within the porous secondary particles, solid diffusion within the primary particles, and ionic transport in the electrolyte surrounding the secondary particles. Our insights enable a goal-oriented tailoring of hierarchically structured electrodes for high-power applications.

    Abstract FIB/SEM tomography represents an indispensable tool for the characterization of three-dimensional nanostructures in battery research and many other fields. However, contrast and 3D classification/reconstruction problems occur in many cases, which strongly limits the applicability of the technique especially on porous materials, like those used for electrode materials in batteries or fuel cells. Distinguishing the different components like active Li storage particles and carbon/binder materials is difficult and often prevents a reliable quantitative analysis of image data, or may even lead to wrong conclusions about structure-property relationships. In this contribution, we present a novel approach for data classification in three-dimensional image data obtained by FIB/SEM tomography and its applications to NMC battery electrode materials. We use two different image signals, namely the signal of the angled SE2 chamber detector and the Inlens detector signal, combine both signals and train a random forest, i.e. a particular machine learning algorithm. We demonstrate that this approach can overcome current limitations of existing techniques suitable for multi-phase measurements and that it allows for quantitative data reconstruction even where current state-of the art techniques fail, or demand for large training sets. This approach may yield as guideline for future research using FIB/SEM tomography.

    Abstract In this study, micron-sized pored membranes, based on the co-polymer polyvinylidene difluoride hexafluoropropylene (PVdF-HFP) were prepared via phase inversion techniques. The aim of the approach was to find less harmful and less toxic solvents to fabricate such films. Therefore, the Hansen solubility approach was used to identify safer and less toxic organic solvents for the phase inversion process, relative to present solvent mixtures, based on acetone, dimethyl formamide, dimethyl acetamide or methanol. With this approach, it was possible to identify cyclopentanone, ethylene glycol and benzyl alcohol as suitable solvents for the membrane preparation process. Physicochemical and mechanical properties were analyzed and compared, which revealed a uniform membrane structure through the cross section. Differences were observed at the top surface, in dependence of both preparation approaches, which are described in detail.
