Abstract Abstract The behavior of microgels and other soft, compressible colloids depends on particle concentration in ways that are absent in their hard-particulate counterparts. For instance, poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (pNIPAM) microgels can spontaneously deswell and reduce suspension polydispersity when concentrated enough. Despite the pNIPAM network in these microgels is neutral, the key to understanding this distinct behavior relies on the existence of peripheric charged groups, responsible for providing colloidal stability when deswollen, and the associated counterion cloud. When in close proximity, clouds of different particles overlap, effectively freeing the associated counterions, which are then able to exert an osmotic pressure that can potentially cause the microgels to decrease their size. Up to now, however, no direct measurement of such an ionic cloud exists, perhaps even also for hard colloids, where it is referred to as an electric double layer. Here, we use small-angle neutron scattering with contrast variation with different ions to isolate the change in the form factor directly related to the counterion cloud, and obtain its radius and width. Our results highlight that the modeling of microgel suspensions must unavoidably and explicitly consider the presence of this cloud, which exists for nearly all microgels synthesized today.

Abstract Background. Runzao Zhiyang capsule (RZC), an oral Chinese herbal medicine, has been widely used for chronic eczema in China for many years. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of RZC as an add-on therapy to conventional treatment for chronic eczema. Methods. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing the efficacy and safety of RZC as an add-on therapy for chronic eczema were retrieved from eight literature databases from their inception to 31 August, 2020, including CNKI, WanFang, VIP, Sinomed, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Embase. The Cochrane risk of bias tool was used to assess the methodological quality of the included studies. The data were analyzed by RevMan5.3 software. Results. A total of 18 RCTs involving 1896 patients with chronic eczema were included. Compared with no oral treatment, RZC was superior on the total efficacy rate (TER) (RR = 1.45, 95% CI: 1.23 to 1.72, P<0.0001), Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI) (MD = −0.73, 95% CI: −0.90 to −0.56, P<0.00001), and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for pruritus (MD = −2.76, 95%CI: −4.53 to −0.99, P=0.002). Similar results were also seen in a randomized, placebo-controlled trial. Compared with the antihistamine (AH) group, TER in the RZC combined with AH group was significantly higher (RR = 1.32, 95% CI: 1.21 to 1.43, P<0.00001), and the EASI score (MD = −0.29, 95% CI: −0.38 to −0.20, P<0.001), the VAS score (MD = −0.19, 95% CI: −0.23 to −0.15, P<0.00001), and the level of serum total IgE (MD = −9.83 ng/ml, 95% CI: −11.66 to −8.00 ng/ml, P<0.00001) decreased more significantly in the RZC combined with AH group. In terms of safety, mild gastrointestinal diseases occurred more frequently in the RZC group, and no serious adverse effect was reported. Conclusions. RZC as an add-on therapy to conventional treatment shows good effects on chronic eczema, and there is no severe side effect from short-term use of RZC. However, due to suboptimal quality of the included studies, more large-sample and high-quality RCTs are needed to improve the evidence quality.

Abstract BackgroundIncreasing numbers of studies demonstrated that picosecond lasers (Picos) were effective and safe for melasma. However, A limited number of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) regarding Picos contribute to a modest level of evidence. Topical hydroquinone (HQ) remains to be the first-line therapy.ObjectiveTo compare the efficacy and safety of non-fractional picosecond Nd:YAG laser (PSNYL), non-fractional picosecond alexandrite laser (PSAL), and 2% HQ cream in the treatment of melasma.MethodSixty melasma patients with Fitzpatrick skin types (FST) III-IV were randomly assigned to the PSNY, PSAL, and HQ groups at a 1:1:1 ratio. Patients in PSNYL and PSAL groups received 3 laser sessions at 4-week intervals. The 2% HQ cream was applied twice daily for 12 weeks in patients of the HQ group. The primary outcome, the melasma area and severity index (MASI) score, was evaluated at weeks 0, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, and 24. The patient assessment score by quartile rating scale was rated at weeks 12, 16, 20, and 24.ResultsFifty-nine (98.3%) subjects were included in the analysis. Each group showed significant change from baseline in MASI scores from week 4 to week 24. The MASI score in the PSNYL group showed the greatest reduction compared to the PSAL group (p = 0.016) and HQ group (p = 0.018). The PSAL group demonstrated comparable MASI improvement as the HQ group (p = 0.998). The PSNYL group had the highest patient assessment score, followed by the PSAL group and then the HQ group, although only the differences between PSNYL and HQ groups at weeks 12 and 16 were significant. Four patients (6.8%) experienced recurrence. Other unanticipated events were transient and subsided after 1 week to 6 months.ConclusionThe efficacy of non-fractional PSNYL was superior to that of non-fractional PSAL, which was not inferior to 2% HQ, thus non-fractional Picos providing an alternative for melasma patients with FSTs III-IV. The safety profiles of PSNYL, PSAL, and 2% HQ cream were similar.Clinical Trial ...

Abstract Objective: To evaluate the association between IL-25, IL-33 and AD more generally. Methods: Databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, Scopus, CNKI and Sinomed were searched. Based on the criteria, publications were collected. The evaluation of study quality was through Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). Fixed or random effect model was selected according to the between-study heterogeneity to evaluate the association. The analysis procedure and the construction plots were using Review Manager 5.3 software. Results: Six studies were included. A total of 282 subjects were included from four studies to analyze the association between IL-25 and AD. The level of IL-25 was significantly elevated in AD patients, comparing with the control subjects (SMD = 0.89, 95% CI: 0.64, 1.14, p < 0.05). For IL-33, a total of 247 subjects were included from two studies, and the level of IL-33 was also significantly elevated in AD patients comparing to the control subjects (SMD = 0.49, 95% CI: 0.19, 0.80, p < 0.05). Conclusions: The serum levels of IL-25, IL-33 are elevated in AD patients of this study. The IL-25 and IL-33 are significantly associated with the risk of AD. Further studies with larger samples, in multiple countries and focused on different age groups are need.

Abstract Objective. Chinese patent medicine (CPM) has been widely used to treat eczema in mainland China for decades. This study aims to investigate circulating CPM for eczema in mainland China and to evaluate the reporting quality of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of them by using the CONSORT-CHM formulas 2017 (Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials for Chinese herbal medicine formulas 2017). Methods. Circulating CPM with the indication for eczema was selected by searching three drug databases and confirmed by contacting the manufacturers. RCTs for the treatment of eczema with CPM were selected in four Chinese literature databases and four English literature databases from their inception to August 31, 2019. The reporting quality of included RCTs was assessed based on the CONSORT-CHM formulas 2017. A univariate analysis was conducted to identify the factors associated with the reporting quality. Results. A total of 70 circulating CPMs had the indication for eczema. Among them, 21 CPMs with 144 RCTs reached the eligible criteria. The mean overall quality score (OQS) of 144 RCTs was 19.85 ± 2.73, which was much less than the maximum score of 38. Of the 38 items, 12 items were reported in over 70% of the trials, 6 items were reported in 50%–70% of the trials, and 16 items were reported in less than 50% of the trials. Publication after 2015 (P<0.001) and the first author from a university hospital (P=0.010) were associated with the better reporting quality. Conclusion. There are a lot of circulating CPMs with the indication for eczema in mainland China, but both the quantity and the reporting quality of RCTs regarding those CPMs are suboptimal. It is necessary that authors and journal editors learn and adhere to the CONSORT-CHM formulas 2017 to enhance the reporting quality of RCTs for the treatment of eczema with CPM.

Abstract Objective. To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Qingpeng ointment for the treatment of subacute and chronic eczema. Method. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on Qingpeng ointment for subacute and chronic eczema were searched on PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Database, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, and Chinese Science and Technology Periodical Journal from their inception to 30 November 2020. Quality assessment and data analysis were performed by Review Manager 5.3. Results. A total of 26 RCTs were included. Qingpeng ointment could significantly improve the total efficacy rate (TER) (RR=2.60, 95% CI: 2.11 to 3.21, P<0.00001), reduce the total symptom score (TSS) (SMD=−2.35, 95% CI: -3.74 to -0.97, P=0.0009), and decrease visual analogue scale (VAS) for pruritus (MD=−3.86, 95% CI: -4.41 to -3.31, P<0.00001) compared with the placebo. The TER of Qingpeng ointment was similar to that of topical corticosteroid (TCS) (RR=0.96, 95% CI: 0.88 to 1.03, P=0.25), and the TSSs between Qingpeng ointment and medium or low potency TCS were not significantly different (SMD=−0.05, 95% CI: -0.22 to 0.12, P=0.54). However, Qingpeng ointment was not superior to TCS in reducing VAS score (SMD=0.48, 95% CI: 0.00 to 0.96, P=0.05). In addition, Qingpeng ointment combined with TCS performed better than TCS alone in all three outcomes. For safety, nothing but skin irritative reactions occurred in the Qingpeng ointment group, and its incidence of skin irritative reactions was similar to those of the placebo (RR=1.47, 95% CI: 0.61 to 3.55, P=0.40) and TCS (RR=1.82, 95% CI: 0.79 to 4.22, P=0.16). The combined therapy did not increase the risk of skin irritative reactions (RR=0.69, 95% CI: 0.27 to 1.78, P=0.44). Conclusion. Qingpeng ointment is an effective and safe treatment for subacute and chronic eczema. It is also an add-on treatment to TCS for eczema. However, due to the suboptimal quality of the included studies, more large-sample and ...

Abstract High-quality economic development is an important approach for achieving sustainable economic development, and it is an essential condition for coordinated development between economic systems and ecosystems. This paper starts from five key points, namely, “innovation, coordination, opening-up, sharing and greenness”, to construct an evaluation system for the index of high-quality economic development, using the AHP and EVM methods to measure the level of high-quality economic development of 30 regions in China from 2004 to 2019. It uses the kernel density estimation model (hereinafter referred to briefly as KDE) and clustering method to analyze time evolution trends and spatial variation characteristics. Moreover, the LSE model is adopted to explore and analyze the factors influencing high-quality economic development in different regions. Additionally, the driving forces of China’s high-quality economic development are analyzed by means of path analysis combined with the average value of each index. The results show the following: (1) The high-quality economic development of 30 regions in China (excluding Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and Tibet) is spatially clustered, with obviously different development levels, characterized by the eastern region being better developed than the central and western regions. (2) With the passage of time, the polarization of China’s 30 regions has been alleviated, but they are still facing challenging development situations; (3) The factors affecting the high-quality economic development of these 30 regions in China can be divided into four types: three-factors, four-factors-I, four-factors-II and five-factors. Contributing regional factors show different distribution characteristics. The above conclusion provides a reference and scientific basis for the government to formulate policies of high-quality economic development and to solve problems facing coordinated sustainable development among regional societies, their economies and the environment.

Abstract Breast cancer is a highly heterogeneous disease lacking prognostic markers. Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) in the tumor microenvironment are associated with distant metastasis as well as poorer outcomes in breast cancer. Therefore, monitoring TAMs may guide prognostic assessment. This study explores an imaging modality based on a two-step click chemistry procedure for detecting TAMs in breast cancer. Mannose-targeted liposomes (MAN-lipo-AAG) and non-targeted liposomes (lipo-AAG) encapsulating Ac4GalNAz were prepared and comprehensively characterized. The sizes of the prepared MAN-lipo-AAG and lipo-AAG were 126 ± 0.22 and 93 ± 0.23 nm, respectively. In vitro studies demonstrated higher uptake of MAN-lipo-AAG than lipo-AAG by RAW264.7 cells. Moreover, flow cytometry and confocal microscopy confirmed that bright, homogeneous fluorescence labeling was present on RAW264.7 cell membranes in the MAN-lipo-AAG group. Furthermore, in vivo analysis indicated that MAN-lipo-AAG, compared with lipo-AAG, had higher accumulation in a 4T1 xenograft model and higher uptake by mannose-overexpressing TAMs. This study describes a promising approach for specific and non-invasive TAM-targeted imaging via metabolic glycoengineering.

Abstract The coordinated development of the economy, resources, and environment is a key aspect of sustainable development. China’s rapid agricultural modernization has been accompanied by the continuous growth of rural economic aggregate and carbon emissions from the planting industry. However, the quantitative relationship between these two factors and its internal mechanism are not yet fully understood. In this paper, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) method is used to calculate the carbon emissions of the planting industry in China from 1998–2019. Based on this, the Tapio decoupling analysis model was constructed to study the decoupling relationship between economic development and carbon emissions of the planting industry in China from 1998–2019 and the associated spatial and temporal evolution patterns. The effect of the complete decomposition model (without residuals), in terms of carbon emissions from the planting industry, on the process of economic development and its transmission mechanism are introduced. The results show that: (1) The carbon emissions of the planting industry in China increased with the economic development occurring from 1998–2005, where agricultural economic development was highly dependent on resource factors and the environment. The growth trend of carbon emissions of the planting industry slowed from 2006 to 2019, while economic development has gradually realized the decoupling of carbon emissions from the planting industry. (2) From 1998–2019, in Heilongjiang, Sichuan, and Hunan, the economic development was given priority, showing strong and negative decoupling with carbon emissions from farming. The economic development in most regions were given priority, showing strong decoupling with carbon emissions from farming. Up to 2019, decoupling was observed with a significant trend of spatial agglomeration. (3) Economic scale effects had a positive influence on the carbon emissions of the planting industry, while the technology effect and population effect had an ...

Abstract The complete chloroplast (cp) genome of Talinum paniculatum (Caryophyllale), a source of pharmaceutical efficacy similar to ginseng, and a widely distributed and planted edible vegetable, were sequenced and analyzed. The cp genome size of T. paniculatum is 156,929 bp, with a pair of inverted repeats (IRs) of 25,751 bp separated by a large single copy (LSC) region of 86,898 bp and a small single copy (SSC) region of 18,529 bp. The genome contains 83 protein-coding genes, 37 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, eight ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes and four pseudogenes. Fifty one (51) repeat units and ninety two (92) simple sequence repeats (SSRs) were found in the genome. The pseudogene rpl23 (Ribosomal protein L23) was insert AATT than other Caryophyllale species by sequence alignment, which located in IRs region. The gene of trnK-UUU (tRNA-Lys) and rpl16 (Ribosomal protein L16) have larger introns in T. paniculatum, and the existence of matK (maturase K) genes, which usually located in the introns of trnK-UUU, rich sequence divergence in Caryophyllale. Complete cp genome comparison with other eight Caryophyllales species indicated that the differences between T. paniculatum and P. oleracea were very slight, and the most highly divergent regions occurred in intergenic spacers. Comparisons of IR boundaries among nine Caryophyllales species showed that T. paniculatum have larger IRs region and the contraction is relatively slight. The phylogenetic analysis among 35 Caryophyllales species and two outgroup species revealed that T. paniculatum and P. oleracea do not belong to the same family. All these results give good opportunities for future identification, barcoding of Talinum species, understanding the evolutionary mode of Caryophyllale cp genome and molecular breeding of T. paniculatum with high pharmaceutical efficacy.
