Abstract The presence of melatonin in plants, called phytomelatonin, has gained great interest in recent years. The determination of phytomelatonin levels in plant extracts for both physiological and plant foodstuff studies requires sophisticated techniques due to the low endogenous levels of this indolic compound with hormonal nature. This chapter presents the most common and advanced techniques in the determination of phytomelatonin, with special emphasis on the techniques of extraction, cleaning, separation, detection, identification, and quantification. Multiple examples and recommendations are presented for a clear overview of the pros and cons of phytomelatonin determinations in plant tissues, seeds, and fruits, mainly.

Abstract This paper comments on the phenomenon of "publish or perish" associated with the current information explosion and its awful consequence: the curse that hangs over academia which dooms it to publish incessantly irrelevant and pointless documents. The overabundance of publications is not justified and is not even necessary in many contexts for personal promotion, and even less for the advancement of science. Therefore, the current role of scientific journals is highly questionable that its aim could be misleading. Huge numbers of articles are published, but they are not read because the aim is principally "publish for publish," or publication for its own sake. The standard corrective tool for improving scientific communication-peer review-cannot function adequately, and biases and perversions are introduced which undermine society's confidence in the scientific enterprise. A dark landscape unfurls itself across the world of scientific information, forcing us to question and improve its current state. Methodologically this paper goes halfway between the essay and the review trying to provoke engaged and useful controversy.

Abstract Sizing optimization and power smoothing methodology in highly fluctuating grid-connected renewable systems represent important challenges nowadays, the total cost and energy quality depend on the effective balance between source and load with certain restrictions to increase reliability and enhance the use of renewable sources at all scales. This article presents a novel power smoothing effect and sizing optimization methodology for a grid-connected photovoltaic-hydrokinetic system by pattern search method comparatively with three optimization algorithms encompassing a multi-objective optimization. In this context, the method considers the reduction of power fluctuations using supercapacitors, where the objective function considers technical and economic indexes. The main contribution of the research is that the objective function decreases the fluctuation suppression ratio to sizing optimization of renewable system through three pattern search size optimization algorithms. Experiments have shown that pattern search method can find the global optimum by reducing the computational effort; the Latin hypercube algorithm reduces the photovoltaic capacity by approximately 5 % and 2.3 % with respect to the Nelder Mead and genetic algorithm respectively. The influence of the supercapacitor successfully reduces power fluctuations and causes an increase in self-consumption of 32.32 %, this result represents an annual cost savings of 42 % on energy purchased from the grid. Furthermore, this paper goes further by calculating the optimal location of a hydrokinetic turbine in a river using the HEC-RAS software to determine with high precision the HKT power fluctuations as input signal to novel proposed method.

Titelübersetzung Review of a pioneer book on epidemics by Risueño de Amador (1829).
Abstract This article reviews and comments on the epidemiological book written by the Spanish physician Benigno Risueño de Amador (1802-1849), initially published in French (1829), and its subsequent translation into Spanish (1831). This retrospective documentary case study of a scientific-medical manual reviews the contents of the book, highlighting its most important aspects. This almost 200-year-old book can be considered a valuable, early contribution to epidemiology, and a sign of the great concern in early 19th Europe about the subject of epidemics. It represents a valuable contribution that shows the enormous efforts made to advance in this medical discipline towards a more scientific position at an incipient microbial time.
