Abstract Hallmark features of the tumor microenvironment include immune cells, stromal cells, blood vessels, and extracellular matrix (ECM), providing a conducive environment for the growth and survival of tumors. Recent advances in the understanding of cancer biology have highlighted the functional role of semaphorins (SEMAs). SEMAs are a large and diverse family of widely expressed secreted and membrane-binding proteins, which were initially implicated in axon guidance and neural development. However, it is now clear that they are widely expressed beyond the nervous system and participate in regulating immune responses and cancer progression. In fact, accumulating evidence disclosed that different SEMAs can either stimulate or restrict tumor progression, some of which act as important regulators of tumor angiogenesis. Conversely, limited information is known about the functional relevance of SEMA signals in TME. In this setting, we systematically elaborate the role SEMAs and their major receptors played in characterized components of TME. Furthermore, we provide a convergent view of current SEMAs pharmacological progress in clinical treatment and also put forward their potential application value and clinical prospects in the future.

Abstract This paper focuses on exploring the application possibilities and optimization problems of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) in spatial computing to improve design efficiency and creativity and achieve a more intelligent design process. A method for icon generation is proposed, and a basic architecture for icon generation is constructed. A system with generation and optimization capabilities is constructed to meet various requirements in spatial design by introducing the concept of interactive design and the characteristics of requirement conditions. Next, the generated icons can effectively maintain diversity and innovation while meeting the conditional features by integrating multi-feature recognition modules into the discriminator and optimizing the structure of conditional features. The experiment uses publicly available icon datasets, including LLD-Icon and Icons-50. The icon shape generated by the model proposed here is more prominent, and the color of colored icons can be more finely controlled. The Inception Score (IS) values under different models are compared, and it is found that the IS value of the proposed model is 7.05, which is higher than that of other GAN models. The multi-feature icon generation model based on Auxiliary Classifier GANs performs well in presenting multiple feature representations of icons. After introducing multi-feature recognition modules into the network model, the peak error of the recognition network is only 2.000 in the initial stage, while the initial error of the ordinary GAN without multi-feature recognition modules is as high as 5.000. It indicates that the improved model effectively helps the discriminative network recognize the core information of icon images more quickly. The research results provide a reference basis for achieving more efficient and innovative interactive space design.

Abstract Knowledge of the speciation of chlorine and chloramines in reverse osmosis (RO) permeate is needed to estimate the performance (i.e., pollutant log reduction) of subsequent UV/chlorine advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). To accurately predict the speciation, a previously reported breakpoint chlorination kinetic model was experimentally validated for pH 5.5 and reaction times < 3 min and used to predict the kinetics of breakpoint chlorination in RO permeate. The predictions showed that eliminating chloramines by adding chlorine at a dose beyond the chlorine-to-nitrogen (Cl/N) breakpoint ratio is not practical due to the high breakpoint Cl/N ratio for RO permeate (∼3.0 molar ratio) and an estimated > 40 min reaction time. The conversion from monochloramine (NH

Abstract Few people use remote sensing data to simultaneously retrieve the seasonal changes in aerosol optical depth (AOD) on land and ocean, as well as its relationship with surface temperature. Aerosols, as one of the indicators of air pollution, directly or indirectly affect people's numerous activities. This article uses Terra satellite MODIS data as the data source and conducts AOD inversion work on the land and ocean areas around Shanghai, China based on IDL, 6S model, and dark pixel method. The results show that for land areas, the higher the surface temperature, the lower the AOD value, with summer being the most significant; On the ocean, the higher the ocean surface temperature, the greater the AOD value. This experiment provides a theoretical basis for the relationship between AOD and temperature, and confirms the possibility of retrieving ocean AOD from MODIS data.

Abstract Reducing subjective poverty among the elderly is an important aspect of poverty governance and is a necessary part of implementing the healthy aging strategy in China. In both China and the majority of low- and middle-income countries, systematic research on the relationship between subjective poverty and the mental health of the elderly needs to be expanded. In this study, we aimed to examine how social capital, including bonding and bridging social capital, mediate the relationship between subjective poverty and mental health among the elderly in China. Relying on the 2018 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) data, we used ordered probit (oprobit) regression, propensity score matching (PSM), and instrumental variable (IV) regression to estimate the effects of subjective poverty on mental health. The results indicate that subjective poverty has a significant negative impact on the mental health of the elderly in China. More importantly, social capital, including bonding and bridging social capital, partially mediates the relationship between subjective poverty and mental health. We believe that, in the process of implementing the government's healthy aging strategy in China, society and government should recognize the importance and value of subjective poverty governance for the elderly. In particular, the construction of a social relationship network that centers on bonding and bridging social capital could be instrumental in dealing with subjective poverty among the elderly and safeguarding their mental health and wellbeing.

Abstract Meta learning aims at learning a model that can quickly adapt to unseen tasks. Widely used meta learning methods include model agnostic meta learning (MAML), implicit MAML, Bayesian MAML. Thanks to its ability of modeling uncertainty, Bayesian MAML often has advantageous empirical performance. However, the theoretical understanding of Bayesian MAML is still limited, especially on questions such as if and when Bayesian MAML has provably better performance than MAML. In this paper, we aim to provide theoretical justifications for Bayesian MAML's advantageous performance by comparing the meta test risks of MAML and Bayesian MAML. In the meta linear regression, under both the distribution agnostic and linear centroid cases, we have established that Bayesian MAML indeed has provably lower meta test risks than MAML. We verify our theoretical results through experiments.

Abstract Benford's law describes the distribution of the first digit of numbers appearing in a wide variety of numerical data, including tax records, and election outcomes, and has been used to raise "red flags" about potential anomalies in the data such as tax evasion. In this work, we ask the following novel question: given a large transaction or financial graph, how do we find a set of nodes that perform many transactions among each other that also deviate significantly from Benford's law? We propose the AntiBenford subgraph framework that is founded on well-established statistical principles. Furthermore, we design an efficient algorithm that finds AntiBenford subgraphs in near-linear time on real data. We evaluate our framework on both real and synthetic data against a variety of competitors. We show empirically that our proposed framework enables the detection of anomalous subgraphs in cryptocurrency transaction networks that go undetected by state-of-the-art graph-based anomaly detection methods. Our empirical findings show that our \ab framework is able to mine anomalous subgraphs, and provide novel insights into financial transaction data. The code and the datasets are available at \url{https://github.com/tsourakakis-lab/antibenford-subgraphs}.

Abstract Stochastic approximation (SA) with multiple coupled sequences has found broad applications in machine learning such as bilevel learning and reinforcement learning (RL). In this paper, we study the finite-time convergence of nonlinear SA with multiple coupled sequences. Different from existing multi-timescale analysis, we seek for scenarios where a fine-grained analysis can provide the tight performance guarantee for multi-sequence single-timescale SA (STSA). At the heart of our analysis is the smoothness property of the fixed points in multi-sequence SA that holds in many applications. When all sequences have strongly monotone increments, we establish the iteration complexity of $\mathcal{O}(\epsilon^{-1})$ to achieve $\epsilon$-accuracy, which improves the existing $\mathcal{O}(\epsilon^{-1.5})$ complexity for two coupled sequences. When all but the main sequence have strongly monotone increments, we establish the iteration complexity of $\mathcal{O}(\epsilon^{-2})$. The merit of our results lies in that applying them to stochastic bilevel and compositional optimization problems, as well as RL problems leads to either relaxed assumptions or improvements over their existing performance guarantees.
