Abstract We explored novel antibacterial braided silk sutures based on levofloxacin hydrochloride and polycaprolactone to obtain sustained-release antibacterial efficacy. This study focused on the effect of braiding parameters on the antibacterial efficacy of braided silk sutures. A series of braids was fabricated with different take-up speeds obtained by changing cogwheel ratios on a circular braiding machine. Antibacterial efficacy, drug release characteristics, and mechanical property were analyzed. Antibacterial specimens showed ideal bacterial reduction. In the drug release profiles, braided silk sutures manufactured at higher cogwheel ratios showed a less significant initial drug burst. In addition, the total drug release amount after 5 days was similar for all samples. Hence, the result of drug release profiles may give some inspiration for the control of drug release in the manufacture of antibacterial braided silk sutures. Moreover, all the samples fulfilled the knot-pull tensile strength requirement of the U.S. Pharmacopeia.

Abstract Objectives This study aims to evaluate the changes of development trends and research hotspots of biomaterials research from 2013 to 2017, which can identify the general information of papers and explore the changes of research content, thus providing perspectives for the development of biomaterials in China and other countries. Methods Data of the paper were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection, and then analyzed by the bibliometric and CiteSpace visualization analysis. Results It was found that a total of 3,839 related papers had been published from the year 2013 to 2017. The analysis of the articles showed that the annual quantity and quality of the articles in the biomaterials research have been increasing since 2013, and the Wang L / Chinese Academy of Sciences were the most productive author/institution. Meanwhile, the keywords “in vitro”, “scaffold”, “nanoparticle” , “mechanical property”, and “biocompatibility” have the relatively higher frequency, and the keywords “apatite”, “deposition”, and “surface modification” have the strongest burst citation. Conclusions After statistics and analysis, we found that biomaterials is a promising research field. The study may be helpful in understanding research trends in this field.

Abstract Hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) is a well-known independent risk factor for vascular diseases in the general population. This study was to explore the effect of genistein (GST), a natural bioactive compound derived from legumes, on HHcy-induced vascular endothelial impairment in ovariectomized rats in vivo. Thirty-two adult female Wistar rats were assigned randomly into four groups (n=8): (a) Con: control; (b) Met: 2.5% methionine diet; (c) OVX + Met: ovariectomy + 2.5% methionine diet; (d) OVX + Met + GST: ovariectomy + 2.5% methionine diet + supplementation with genistein. After 12 wk of different treatment, the rats' blood, toracic aortas and liver samples were collected for analysis. Results showed that high-methionine diet induced both elevation of plasma Hcy and endothelial dysfunction, and ovariectomy deteriorated these injuries. Significant improvement of both functional and morphological changes of vascular endothelium was observed in OVX + Met + GST group; meanwhile the plasma Hcy levels decreased remarkably. There were significant elevations of plasma ET-1 and liver MDA levels in ovariectomized HHcy rats, and supplementation with genistein could attenuate these changes. These results implied that genistein could lower the elevated Hcy levels, and prevent the development of endothelial impairment in ovariectomized HHcy rats. This finding may shed a novel light on the anti-atherogenic activities of genistein in HHcy patients.
