    Abstract Federal regulations and policies require institutions to establish procedures for ongoing IACUC oversight of approved animal care and use program activities including animal procedures. To fulfill these requirements, research institutions implement postapproval monitoring (PAM) programs designed to assure compliance in animal activities. Although several references commenting on the requirement to conduct PAM are available, few publications discuss actual best practices for accomplishing PAM. Here we use information collected through a survey of large academic research institutions to identify common practices for conducting PAM reviews. Many similarities and differences exist between institutions, which may or may not influence the overall quality of an institution's PAM program.

    Abstract Pharmacological agents are commonly administered to mice through multiple intraperitoneal (i.p.) injections. The i.p. route of administration is usually considered safe, but questions of animal welfare arise when protocols require that multiple injections be given to the same animal. IACUCs must consider the potential risks associated with multiple i.p. injections in order to determine the maximum number of injections an animal can receive within a study protocol, but there are no published studies of such potential risks. The authors investigated the effects of 30 daily i.p. saline injections on the behavior, body condition, weight, fecal corticosterone levels, hematology and pathology of female adult mice. Results indicate that multiple i.p. injections do not cause any ill effects in mice.

    Abstract Persons living with HIV in the United States face social stigma related to their health conditions. The present study evaluated the relationship between concerns about HIV-related stigma, quality of life, and social support and evaluated social support as a possible pathway contributing to the relationship between stigma concerns and quality of life in low-income Hispanics living with HIV (N = 160). Persons who expressed greater HIV-related stigma concerns in the context of receiving medical care reported poorer psychological functioning (R2 delta = .08, P < .01), lower physical functioning (R2 delta = .03, P < .05), and a decreased ability to complete daily activities (R2 delta = .06, P < .01). In addition, higher levels of stigma concerns were associated with lower social support (R2 delta = .15, P < .001). Mediation analyses showed that social support accounted, in part, for the relationship between stigma concerns and physical functioning (z = 2.16, P < .05), psychological functioning (z = 3.18, P < .001), and interference with daily activities (z = 2.95, P < .01). Interventions directed toward dispelling HIV-related social stigma by educating patients, communities, and physicians would be beneficial to improve quality of life in Hispanics living with HIV.
