Abstract A strain isolated from potato common scab superficial lesions in El Fuerte Valley in northern Sinaloa, Mexico, was identified by 16S rRNA and morphological methods. Moreover, the effects of the crude extract of strain V2 was evaluated on radish and potato. The isolate was similar to Streptomyces acidiscabies in its morphological properties; however, the 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain V2 was neither 100% identical to this species nor to the streptomycetes previously reported in Sinaloa, Mexico. Strain V2 did not amplify any specific PCR products for genes nec1 and tomA, which have been found and reported in S. acidiscabies. Strain V2 produced a PCR product for the txtAB operon, which is related to the production of thaxtomin. In vitro assays using crude thaxtomin extract and a spore suspension of the organism caused necrotic symptoms on radish and potato, which were highly virulent in potato. This study reports that Streptomyces sp. V2 has a toxigenic region (TR) that is associated with the thaxtomin gene cluster.

Abstract It is thought that the natural evolution of egg allergy has a good tolerance prognosis. However, there are few follow-up studies that determine the exact probability of tolerance. The aim of this study was to determine the likelihood that children younger than 2,5 years of age with allergy to egg would eventually have tolerance to it and to analyze if monitoring egg white-specific IgE level over time could be used as a predictor for determining when patients develop clinical tolerance. We performed a retrospective study of our last 42 patients diagnosed with egg allergy. Annual follow-up comprised prick testing, specific IgE (sIgE) and provocation testing with egg white (EW), allowing the prediction of tolerance at that timepoint with a probability of >or=95%. Median survival time was 48 months. The mean initial and final levels of EW sIgE were lower in the patients that reached tolerance (p<0.05). EW sIgE levels of 1.52, 1.35, and 2.59 KUA/l, respectively predicted clinical reactivity (PPV > 95%) at the different follow-up timepoints analyzed (25-36, 37-48 and 49-60 months. Quantification of egg white specific IgE levels is a useful test for diagnosing symptomatic allergy to egg white in the pediatric population and could eliminate the need to perform oral challenges tests in a significant number of children.

Abstract Background: A genetic tendency to develop latex IgE responses in children with spina bifida has been suggested, but their degree of exposure to latex as well as the route and chronology for sensitization can be different from those of other children with multiple surgeries. The aim was to study the influence of the type of operation on the development of latex sensitization in children with myelomeningocele.
Methods: In 90 children with myelomeningocele operated with latex, data were collected about age, sex, family, and personal history of allergy, serum total IgE, presence of a ventricular-peritoneal (v-p) shunt, and number and duration of operations, classified as urological, orthopedic, on the v-p shunt, other neurosurgical, and others. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed, using the presence of latex sensitization as dependent variable.
Results: Serum total IgE, the number of urological and of orthopedic operations were synergistic variables to predict latex sensitization, together with the presence of a v-p shunt, but not the number of operations performed on this device. This seems to play an adjuvant role in the process of sensitization.
Conclusions: Not only the number, but also the type of operations, namely, of urological and orthopedic nature, is important in the development of latex sensitization in children with myelomeningocele.
