    Abstract This paper studies the role of middlemen in open-access fisheries and how the organization of the supply chains affects resource exploitation and the level and distribution of economic rent. Imperfect competition among middlemen can help ensure that fish stocks are not depleted, which is typically the case in open-access fisheries with competitive markets. Middlemen with market power can also induce higher economic rent for the supply chain in total, but these rents mainly benefit the middlemen. The supply chains of inshore anchovy and offshore skipjack tuna fisheries in Vietnam are used as empirical examples. The analysis shows that in the anchovy supply chain, the middlemen have insignificant market power and the stock is being overexploited. In the skipjack tuna supply chain, the middlemen have oligopsony power and the stock is higher than the level that produces maximum sustainable yield.

    Abstract This article uses the propensity-score matching method to examine the effects of a government subsidy program on the profitability of fisheries. The effects are analyzed at the individual vessel level through representative surveys of costs and earnings. Bioeconomic theory and a vessel economics framework for open-access fisheries are the basis for the empirical discussion of a case study involving Vietnam's offshore gillnet fishery. The results demonstrate that the subsidy program has positive effects on vessel profitability, but the profits erode over the two years of the analysis. Subsidies have a positive impact on the operating cash flows of large vessels but negative effects on their intra-marginal rent, and bring benefits to vessel owners rather than crew members. This study reports on the first treatment evaluation of subsidies in a Southeast Asian fishery and discusses evidence that fish stocks may be biologically overfished.JEL Codes: C31, D01, Q22, Q28.

    Abstract The difference between the concepts of profit and rent are discussed theoretically and by using aggregated data from the Icelandic and Norwegian fish harvesting industries. The former is a basic indicator for gauging the business performance of firms and industries, and the latter is important for the evaluation of the economic welfare contribution of resources and industries. The importance of distinguishing between profit and rent is greater for fisheries under strict management control, such as those with quotas and licenses, than those with more open access. It was found that profit is lower than rent in both countries. Policy implications are discussed. JEL Codes: Q22, Q28.

    Abstract This study examines the relationships between profitability, nitrogen (N) surplus, greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), and energy intensity and factors influencing these relationships in dairy farming. In-depth data from 10 conventional and 8 organic dairy farms in Western Norway were analyzed. Organic farms had lower N surplus per hectare (local, onfarm) and per unit output (global, cradle-to-farm-gate), and lower estimated GHG emissions and energy intensity per unit output, whereas labor input and farm profits did not differ. Higher profitability tended to be associated with improved performance of the environmental indicators examined. Intensification through increased use of concentrates tended to improve profit and reduce N surplus, GHG emissions, and energy intensity per unit output within each farming system while N surplus per hectare could be negatively affected. To ensure a balanced representation of the environmental consequences of both organic and conventional farming systems, our results give support to extensive examination of both areaand product-based environmental performance indicators.
