    Abstract Mapping the density distribution and monitoring density changes under volcanoes and geological reservoirs is a major challenge in geology and volcanology. Muon radiography has a high potential to advance this field, but often there are no inexpensive high-end detectors available that are suitable for field installations. A DIRC-type Cherenkov detector as a muon camera has a small dimension and is suited for such field applications (MagmaDIRC idea). In measuring directions and energies of the incoming muons one can turn the mass density integrals along the lines of flight into a radiography image, and by discarting low-energy muons with their blurred angular information one obtains sharper images. In particular one may detect the time variation of the mass density distributions situated above the horizon line in a volcanic edifice that occurs when magma is filling its plumbing system or when the level of a lava lake changes. Using numerical simulations, we discuss design aspects and the requirements of such a DIRC system. Two sites are identified for proof-of-principle field measurements. The required measurement times are estimated for the given site conditions and morphology based on the specifications of an operational DIRC system. The merits of DIRC sensors are contrasted to other muon radiography techniques.

    Abstract Exclusive measurements of the quasifree pp→ppπ^{+}π^{-} reaction have been carried out at WASA@COSY by means of pd collisions at T_{p}=1.2  GeV. Total and differential cross sections have been extracted covering the energy region T_{p}=1.08-1.36  GeV, which is the region of N^{*}(1440) and Δ(1232)Δ(1232) resonance excitations. Calculations describing these excitations by t-channel meson exchange are at variance with the measured differential cross sections and underpredict substantially the experimental total cross section. An isotensor ΔN dibaryon resonance with I(J^{P})=2(1^{+}) produced associatedly with a pion is able to overcome these deficiencies.

    Abstract Taking advantage of the high acceptance and axial symmetry of the WASA-at-COSY detector, and the high polarization degree of the proton beam of COSY, the reaction p[over →]p→ppη has been measured close to threshold to explore the analyzing power A_{y}. The angular distribution of A_{y} is determined with the precision improved by more than 1 order of magnitude with respect to previous results, allowing a first accurate comparison with theoretical predictions. The determined analyzing power is consistent with zero for an excess energy of Q=15  MeV, signaling s-wave production with no evidence for higher partial waves. At Q=72  MeV the data reveal strong interference of Ps and Pp partial waves and cancellation of (Pp)^{2} and Ss^{*}Sd contributions. These results rule out the presently available theoretical predictions for the production mechanism of the η meson.

    Abstract The photoproduction of eta-mesic 3He has been investigated using the TAPS calorimeter at the Mainz Microtron accelerator facility MAMI. The total inclusive cross section for the reaction gamma3He-->etaX has been measured for photon energies from threshold to 820 MeV. The total and angular differential coherent eta cross sections have been extracted up to energies of 745 MeV. A resonancelike structure just above the eta production threshold with an isotropic angular distribution suggests the existence of a resonant quasibound state. This is supported by studies of a competing decay channel of such a quasibound eta-mesic nucleus into pi(0)pX. A binding energy of (-4.4+/-4.2) MeV and a width of (25.6+/-6.1) MeV is deduced for the quasibound eta-mesic state in 3He.
