Abstract ABSTRACT Osteoarthritis and Parvovirus B19 infection present silent and gradual evolution, since the former is a degenerative process while the latter is often asymptomatic and may persist in the individual’s body during their life. This study aims to analyze clinical studies that establish a correlation between degenerative osteoarthritis and Parvovirus B19 infection. Of the 62 studies found, 25 were chosen for reading in full. Analyzing only the studies that establish the correlation between the pathologies, seven confirm this relationship between Parvovirus B19 and Osteoarthritis, while one reports no relationship. No objective correlation could be found between the other articles studied. Our findings suggest that there is a close relationship between Parvovirus B19 and Osteoarthritis, with a higher prevalence of acquired causes, women and older adults, but it can manifest during life. However, it is essential to carry out new studies involving family history of patients with Osteoarthritis with positivity of Parvovirus B19, cohort studies between childhood and adult-old adult, so that it can elucidate this duality of congenital-acquired cause and, finally, raise treatment alternatives. Abstract ABSTRACT Objective To analyze the characteristics of patients diagnosed with pediatric osteoarticular infections treated in a level III trauma center in São Paulo, Brazil. Methods We retrospectively analyzed patients admitted between September 2012 and August 2014. The outcomes analyzed were: age, sex, diagnosis, etiologic agent, anatomic location, time to diagnosis, history of previous trauma and infection, laboratory tests, treatment, and complications. Results Twenty patients were included, 50% with septic arthritis, 35% with osteomyelitis, and 15% with both. Boys were predominant (80%), and the mean age was 6.6 years. The most common etiologic agent was Staphylococcus aureus. C-reactive protein value and erythrocyte sedimentation rate were elevated. The infections were treated with antibiotic therapy (intravenous and oral) and oxacillin was most frequently used. Most patients underwent at least one surgical procedure, and 35% of patients had complications. Conclusion This epidemiological mapping identified clinical and demographic characteristics which are useful for improving preparation for care. Future prospective studies with longer patient follow-up and the development of treatment protocols are needed to improve therapeutic decision-making and the prognosis of children with suspected osteoarticular infections. Evidence Level II; Prognostic studies - Investigation of the effect of patient characteristics on the outcome of the disease.

Abstract OBJECTIVE: To analyze the characteristics of patients with Gustilo-Anderson Type III open tibial fractures treated at a tertiary care hospital in São Paulo between January 2013 and August 2014. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional retrospective study. The following data were gathered from the electronic medical records: age; gender; diagnosis; trauma mechanism; comorbidities; associated fractures; Gustilo and Anderson, Tscherne and AO classifications; treatment (initial and definitive); presence of compartment syndrome; primary and secondary amputations; MESS (Mangled Extremity Severity Score) index; mortality rate; and infection rate. RESULTS: 116 patients were included: 81% with fracture type IIIA, 12% IIIB and 7% IIIC; 85% males; mean age 32.3 years; and 57% victims of motorcycle accidents. Tibial shaft fractures were significantly more prevalent (67%). Eight patients were subjected to amputation: one primary case and seven secondary cases. Types IIIC (75%) and IIIB (25%) predominated among the patients subjected to secondary amputation. The MESS index was greater than 7 in 88% of the amputees and in 5% of the limb salvage group. CONCLUSION: The profile of patients with open tibial fracture of Gustilo and Anderson Type III mainly involved young male individuals who were victims of motorcycle accidents. The tibial shaft was the segment most affected. Only 7% of the patients underwent amputation. Given the current controversy in the literature about amputation or salvage of severely injured lower limbs, it becomes necessary to carry out prospective studies to support clinical decisions.
