Abstract This book features a comprehensive analysis of the development of shale gas resources in China, with a focus on the potential environmental impacts that may result. China has the world’s largest shale gas resources, which it is keen to develop to alleviate air pollution and successfully transition to a low-carbon energy future. However, one significant obstacle standing between the ambition and reality is the potentially serious environmental impacts of shale gas production. This book offers a systematic assessment of these potential impacts, including the risk of water contamination, ecological disruption due to the huge consumption of water and methane leakage. It presents valuable first-hand data collected from the authors’ fieldwork in Sichuan and Chongqing and the latest information on China’s current shale gas operations and also includes a set of models and methods developed to quantify the impacts. It allows readers to gain a deeper understanding of environmental regulatory management systems regarding shale gas production in China by examining whether the existing monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) systems and environmental regulations can effectively prevent adverse impacts from shale gas production. Providing a detailed study of shale gas development in China based on an unprecedented primary dataset, the book is a valuable resource for scholars, engineers and students who are interested in the energy development and environmental risks. .

Abstract This study aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of vitamin D supplementation in the treatment of allergic rhinitis (AR) using mometasone. A total of 140 patients with moderate and severe AR treated at our hospital between January 2017 and August 2020 were recruited as subjects for this study. The patients were randomly divided into control and experimental groups, with 70 patients in each group. Mometasone nasal spray was used in both groups, and vitamin D was administered to the experimental group for four weeks. The total nasal symptom scores (TNSS) and rhinoconjunctivitis quality of life questionnaire (RQLQ) were used to assess the efficacy of treatment. T lymphocyte subsets (CD3+, CD4+ and CD8+) and serum anti-inflammatory and proinflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-10 (IL-10), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) were analyzed. The incidence of adverse reactions was recorded. Serum vitamin D levels were lower in patients with AR. After 4 weeks of treatment, total TNSS scores, T lymphocyte subsets (CD3+, CD4+), CD4+/CD8+ ratio, TNF-α, and total RQLQ scores were significantly reduced compared to the initial testing (P<0.05) in the two groups; CD8+, IFN-γ, and IL-10 levels as well as serum vitamin D were significantly increased compared to the initial test (P<0.05). The improvement in these parameters in the experimental group was significantly greater than that in the control group (P<0.05), except for sneezing and eye symptoms in the TNSS and RQLQ scores. It was concluded that vitamin D supplementation improves the therapeutic effect of mometasone nasal spray on AR and is thus recommended as an adjuvant therapy for moderate and severe AR.

Abstract From the perspective of ecological environmental protection, higher education can not only train a large number of professionals dedicated to environmental protection for the construction of environmental quality, but more importantly, it can promote the improvement of the quality of ecological civilization in the whole society, so as to achieve the effect of indirectly improving environmental quality. BRICS economies, as the most important economies in the world, have an impact on the development of the world in many aspects. However, under the guidance of the concept of sustainable development, whether the environmental quality of BRICS economies meets the standards has also become the focus of scholars. Starting from the sustainable development path, this paper summarizes the model of environmental education in BRICS national higher education. At the same time, through the establishment of the BRICS environmental quality assessment system, the environmental quality of the BRICS countries after the implementation of environmental education was assessed based on the content of the sustainable development system. This paper performs matrix operations on the weight values of the indicators at all levels and the membership vector to obtain a 4 × 4 matrix, that is, the evaluation result

Abstract We study worst-case VCG redistribution mechanism design for the public project problem. We use a multilayer perceptron (MLP) with ReLU activation to model the payment function and use mixed integer programming (MIP) to solve for the worst-case type profiles that maximally violate the mechanism design constraints. We collect these worst-case type profiles and use them as training samples to train toward better worst-case mechanisms. In practice, we require a tiny network structure for the above approach to scale. The Lottery Ticket Hypothesis states that a large network is likely to contain a "winning ticket" -- a much smaller subnetwork that "won the initialization lottery", which makes its training particularly effective. Motivated by this hypothesis, we train a large network and prune it into a tiny subnetwork. We run MIP-based worst-case training on the drawn subnetwork and evaluate the resulting mechanism's worst-case performance. If the subnetwork does not achieve good worst-case performance, then we record the type profiles that cause the current draw to be bad. To draw again, we restore the large network to its initial weights and prune using recorded type profiles from earlier draws, therefore avoiding drawing the same ticket twice. We expect to eventually encounter a tiny subnetwork that leads to effective training for our worst-case mechanism design task. Lastly, a by-product of multiple ticket draws is an ensemble of mechanisms with different worst cases, which improves the worst-case performance further. Using our approach, we find previously unknown optimal mechanisms for up to 5 agents. Our results confirm the tightness of existing theoretical upper bounds. For up to 20 agents, we derive significantly improved worst-case mechanisms, surpassing a long list of existing manual results.

Abstract We propose a scheme for controlling coherent photon absorption by electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a three-level atom-cavity system. Coherent perfect absorption (CPA) occurs when time-reversed symmetry of lasing process is obtained with the destructive interference at the cavity interfaces. The frequency range of CPA is generally dependent on the decay rates of the cavity mirrors. The smaller decay rate of the cavity mirror causes the wider frequency range of CPA, and the needed intensity of the probe fields is larger to satisfy CPA condition for a given frequency. Although Rabi frequency of the control laser has little effect on the frequency range of CPA, with EIT-type quantum interference, the CPA mode is tunable by the control laser. In addition, with the relative phase, the probe fields can be perfectly transmitted and/or reflected. Therefore, the system can be used as a controllable coherent perfect absorber or transmitter (reflector), and our work may have practical applications in optical logic devices.

Abstract Pancreatic cancer is a highly malignant and invasive gastrointestinal tumor that is often diagnosed at an advanced stage with a poor prognosis and high mortality. Currently, carbohydrate antigen199(CA199) is the only biomarker approved by the FDA for the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, but it has great limitations. Growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15) is expected to be a novel biomarker for the diagnosis, efficacy prediction, and prognosis assessment of pancreatic cancer patients. In this paper, we searched the keywords GDF-15, macrophage inhibitory cytokine-1 (MIC-1), CA199, pancreatic cancer, and tumor markers in PubMed and Web of Science, searched related articles, and read and analyzed the retrieved papers. Finally, we systematically described the characteristics, mechanism of action, and clinical value of GDF-15, aiming to provide help for the detection and treatment of pancreatic cancer.
