Abstract Background: The tumors involving the gynecologic tract encompass a wide range of lesions including those of epithelial, mesenchymal, sex cord-stromal, and germ cell origin. Amongst the carcinomas of tubo-ovarian origin, high-grade serous carcinoma is the most common malignancy. The primary role of fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology in the management of gynecologic tract malignancies is in the diagnosis of their recurrences/metastases. In patients presenting with advanced disease, the cytology specimen may be the initial or the only sampling performed before the initiation of treatment.
Summary: This review will discuss the cytologic findings of various gynecologic tract neoplasms with regard to their morphologic features, differential diagnoses, and the ancillary studies that can assist in their recognition.
Key messages: FNA cytology serves as a valuable tool in the diagnosis and management of gynecologic tract malignancies. However, making an accurate diagnosis of these entities, especially on limited cytology specimens, can be challenging. Awareness regarding the morphologic spectrum of these tumors, their potential mimics, and the ancillary studies that can be employed to refine their characterization, can assist in arriving at the correct diagnosis.

Abstract Many naturally occurring bacteria lead a lifestyle of metabolic dependency for crucial resources. We do not understand what factors drive bacteria toward this lifestyle and how. Here, we systematically show the crucial role of horizontal gene transfer (HGT) in dependency evolution in bacteria. Across 835 bacterial species, we map gene gain-loss dynamics on a deep evolutionary tree and assess the impact of HGT and gene loss on metabolic networks. Our analyses suggest that HGT-enabled gene gains can affect which genes are later lost. HGT typically adds new catabolic routes to bacterial metabolic networks, leading to new metabolic interactions between bacteria. We also find that gaining new routes can promote the loss of ancestral routes ("coupled gains and losses", CGLs). Phylogenetic patterns indicate that both dependencies-mediated by CGLs and those purely by gene loss-are equally likely. Our results highlight HGT as an important driver of metabolic dependency evolution in bacteria.

Abstract Combinatorial synthesis via a continuous composition spread is an excellent route to develop thin-film libraries as it is both time- and cost-efficient. Creating libraries of functional, multicomponent, complex oxide films requires excellent control over the synthesis parameters combined with high-throughput analytical feedback. A reliable, high-throughput, in-situ characterization analysis method is required to meet the crucial need to rapidly screen materials libraries. Here, we report on the combination of two in-situ techniques-(a) Reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) for heteroepitaxial characterization and a newly developed compositional analysis technique, low-angle x-ray spectroscopy (LAXS), to map the chemical composition profile of combinatorial heteroepitaxial complex oxide films deposited using a continuous composition spread method via pulsed laser deposition. This is accomplished using a unique state-of-the-art combinatorial growth system with a fully synchronized four-axis mechanical substrate stage without shadow masks, alternating acquisition of chemical compositional data using LAXS at various different positions on the [Formula: see text] 41 mm [Formula: see text] 41 mm range and sequential deposition of multilayers of SrTiO[Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] on a 2-inch (50.8 mm) [Formula: see text] wafer in a single growth run. Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) is used to calibrate and validate the compositions determined by LAXS. This study shows the feasibility of combinatorial synthesis of heteroepitaxial, functional complex oxide films at wafer-scale via two essential in-situ characterization tools-RHEED for structural analysis or heteroepitaxy and LAXS for compositional characterization. This is a powerful technique for development of new films with optimized heteroepitaxy and composition.
