Abstract In degenerative neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease, a convergence of widely varying insults results in a loss of dopaminergic neurons and, thus, the motor symptoms of the disease. Dopamine replacement therapy with agents such as levodopa is a mainstay of therapy. Cerebellar ataxias, a heterogeneous group of currently untreatable conditions, have not been identified to have a shared physiology that is a target of therapy. In this review, we propose that perturbations in cerebellar Purkinje neuron intrinsic membrane excitability, a result of ion channel dysregulation, is a common pathophysiologic mechanism that drives motor impairment and vulnerability to degeneration in cerebellar ataxias of widely differing genetic etiologies. We further propose that treatments aimed at restoring Purkinje neuron intrinsic membrane excitability have the potential to be a shared therapy in cerebellar ataxia akin to levodopa for Parkinson's disease.

Abstract Power can be converted with high efficiently between thermal energy and mechanical (acoustic) energy by using thermoacoustic technologies. Thus, the heat transfer characteristics are significant to the understanding of mechanisms, and improvement of efficiency for thermoacoustic devices, notably in heat exchangers. This paper introduces a two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics model of flow across a parallel-plate heat exchanger and investigates the effect of plate spacing on heat transfer characteristics. The open source CFD software OpenFOAM is applied because of the highly customizable capabilities to vary the control parameters. Firstly, the computational model including geometry, boundary conditions, equations, discretization scheme, turbulence and thermophysical properties’ models are presented, and then grid-independence validation is presented to verify the quality of mesh. The simulation results show that plate spacing influences the heat transfer between plates and adjacent area of heat exchanger, and the heat transfer coefficient goes up when the plate spacing decreases. The analysis also indicates that a possible flow transition to turbulence occurred within Re number between 247.2 and 321.4. The results in this work can help the understanding of heat transfer inside thermoacoustic system, and form a basis for future research.

Abstract Segmentation of linear objects based on their morphological characteristics is a pivotal pre-step for adaptive generalization. Existing studies mainly use hand-crafted features, such as length, angle, and curvature, to describe the local structures of linear objects, and further to identify different patterns based on manual-defined rules or machine learning methods. In this study, we propose a structural recognition and segmentation method for linear objects using deep learning. First, a linear unit (also known as lixel) composed of two adjacent points is considered as the processing unit, and each linear object is discretized into a two-dimension sequence in which the differences between the horizontal and vertical coordinates of each lixel are encoded. Then, a sequential convolutional neural network (SCNN) is established to predict the types of each lixel. Finally, the segmentation results of different morphological characteristics are obtained by merging the adjacent lixels with the same type using an iteration method. Experiments were conducted on two datasets of 1∶50 k administrative boundaries and 1∶250 k mountain roads, and the consistency ratios of segmentation results were 91.25% and 85.65%, respectively, outperforming the traditional methods based on backpropagation artificial neural network and Naïve Bayes. Overall, our method can effectively avoid the subjectivity that exists when designing the hand-crafted features, and is more adaptable to the segmentation of linear objects with different scales and types.

Abstract Three-dimensional separation materials with robust physical/chemical stability have great demand for effective and continuous separation of immiscible oil/water mixtures and water-in-oil emulsions, resulting from chemical leakages and discharge of industrial oily wastewaters. Herein, a superelastic polystyrene-based porous material with superhydrophobicity/superoleophilicity was designed and prepared by high internal phase emulsion polymerization to meet the aforementioned requirements. Abstract: Background: Ectopic scrotum (ES) is an extremely rare congenital scrotal malformation. Ectopic scrotum with VATER/VACTERL [vertebral defects (V), anal atresia or anorectal malformations (A), cardiac defects (C), tracheoesophageal fistula with or without ...

Abstract Background: Ectopic scrotum (ES) is an extremely rare congenital scrotal malformation. Ectopic scrotum with VATER/VACTERL [vertebral defects (V), anal atresia or anorectal malformations (A), cardiac defects (C), tracheoesophageal fistula with or without esophageal atresia (TE), cardiac defects, renal malformations (R), and limb defects (L)] association is even rarer. There are no uniform guidelines for diagnosis and treatment.
Clinical case: We described a 2-year-5-month-old boy who has ectopic scrotum and penoscrotal transposition and reviewed relevant literature in this report. We performed laparoscopy exploration, rotation flap scrotoplasty, and orchiopexy and achieved a great result during the postoperative follow-up.
Conclusions: Combined with the previous literature, we made a summary to come up with a plan for the diagnosis and treatment of ectopic scrotum. Rotation flap scrotoplasty and orchiopexy are worthy of considering operative methods in treating ES. For penoscrotal transposition or VATER/VACTERL association, we can treat the diseases individually.

Abstract Selecting an appropriate response from many candidates given the utterances in a multi-turn dialogue is the key problem for a retrieval-based dialogue system. Existing work formalizes the task as matching between the utterances and a candidate and uses the cross-entropy loss in learning of the model. This paper applies contrastive learning to the problem by using the supervised contrastive loss. In this way, the learned representations of positive examples and representations of negative examples can be more distantly separated in the embedding space, and the performance of matching can be enhanced. We further develop a new method for supervised contrastive learning, referred to as two-level supervised contrastive learning, and employ the method in response selection in multi-turn dialogue. Our method exploits two techniques: sentence token shuffling (STS) and sentence re-ordering (SR) for supervised contrastive learning. Experimental results on three benchmark datasets demonstrate that the proposed method significantly outperforms the contrastive learning baseline and the state-of-the-art methods for the task.

Abstract Superhydrophobic and magnetic materials with multiple functions (e.g., continuous oil collection, remote oil removal in confined spaces under magnetic driven, separation of oil/water emulsions, and good oil absorption capacity with robust stability) are highly required for practical oily wastewater remediation, but still a challenge to be realized. For this purpose, superhydrophobic Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles/polystyrene (PS) composite sponge has been fabricated via high internal phase emulsion template method. The as-prepared sponge exhibits high water-repellence and superoleophilicity with water/oil contact angles are 155º and 0º, respectively. Given the magnetic properties of Fe₃O₄, our sponge displays the capacity for remote oil capture under magnetic driven. Additionally, continuous oil collection has been also realized with the equipment of pumper. Different from some previous reported sponges, our sponge also possesses the unique ability to separate surfactant stabilized oil/water emulsion. Besides, our sponge can also act as a high-efficiency oil absorbent with robust cycling stability (oil recovery rate can reach 92%, even after 10 absorption-centrifugation cycles). These outstanding functions make our sponge hold great potential for the purification of oily wastewater. This work reported a simple and environmentally-friendly approach to prepare multi-functional magnetic and superhydrophobic sponges via high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) method. The PS/Fe₃O₄ composite sponges exhibited unique properties: (i) high water-repellence and good oleophilicity; (ii) the function as a high-efficiency oil absorbent with robust cycling stability; (iii) ability to remove oil remotely under magnetic driven; (iv) continuous oil collection; (v) the capacity to separate surfactant stabilized oil/water emulsion. These outstanding performances make our sponge is of great importance for practical oily wastewater remediation.

Abstract Pancreatic cancer is the deadliest disease, with a five-year overall survival rate of just 11%. The pancreatic cancer patients diagnosed with early screening have a median overall survival of nearly ten years, compared with 1.5 years for those not diagnosed with early screening. Therefore, early diagnosis and early treatment of pancreatic cancer are particularly critical. However, as a rare disease, the general screening cost of pancreatic cancer is high, the accuracy of existing tumor markers is not enough, and the efficacy of treatment methods is not exact. In terms of early diagnosis, artificial intelligence technology can quickly locate high-risk groups through medical images, pathological examination, biomarkers, and other aspects, then screening pancreatic cancer lesions early. At the same time, the artificial intelligence algorithm can also be used to predict the survival time, recurrence risk, metastasis, and therapy response which could affect the prognosis. In addition, artificial intelligence is widely used in pancreatic cancer health records, estimating medical imaging parameters, developing computer-aided diagnosis systems, etc. Advances in AI applications for pancreatic cancer will require a concerted effort among clinicians, basic scientists, statisticians, and engineers. Although it has some limitations, it will play an essential role in overcoming pancreatic cancer in the foreseeable future due to its mighty computing power.
