    Abstract A survey based questionnaire research was conducted in Sainj Valley, Himachal Pradesh. The survey was conducted in June-July 2015 in an area affected due to hydro power projects (HPPs). A total of 48 individuals participated in the survey. Based on survey questionnaire, it was found that native rural people perceived that HPPs had significantly brought positive change in life of native people and were therefore in favour of HPPs. However, large section of native people had not been benefited of HPPs. The decline in agriculture production, change in cropping pattern and poor access of water to native people were some of the negative implications of these projects. The dependence of native people on forest resources has not declined much and still number of local individuals depends on forest resources to supplement their income. Though, in current scenario people has benefited from such projects, however it is not known if it will be sustained for long time due to current unsustainable agriculture practices and limited employment opportunities. Moreover, Government should provide adequate compensation to the affected individuals by either providing a suitable land for agriculture or employment under various rural sector schemes.

    Abstract To develop effective vegetation strips for filtering out point source air pollutants, several characteristics of vegetation strips and concentrations of 6 air pollutants (PM10, PM2.5, SO2, NOX, ozone, benzene) at five sites in Delhi were studied. Four air pollutants were within the prescribed limits; whereas the concentration of PM10 (80.27−710 μg/m3) was 3-4 times while PM2.5 (27.34−327.11 μg/m3) was 2-3 times higher than the standard limits notified by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India in 2009. Anand Vihar (AV) was the most polluted site whereas the Mandir Marg (MM) the least polluted. Species composition of the vegetation strips and their abundance, canopy type, and size of the leaf determined the efficacy as a filter for air pollutants. The abundance of broadleaved species such as Ficus religiosa, Alstonia scholaris and Polyalthia longifolia showed negative, statistically significant (p < 0.01) relationships with all the air pollutants analysed suggesting an abundance of broadleaved trees are effective in the filtration of air pollutants. The abundance of microphyllous trees such as Prosopis juliflora were the least effective filters. Ficus religiosa was the most effective tree species with respect to filtering air pollutants and particulate matter.

    Abstract Jolli V., Pandit M.K. 2011. Monitoring pheasants (Phasianidae) in the Western Himalayas tomeasure the impact of hydro-electric projects. Ring 33, 1-2: 37-46.In this study, we monitored pheasants abundance to measure the impact of a hydroelectric development project. The pheasants abundance was monitored using “call count” and line transect methods during breeding seasons in 2009-2011. Three call count stations and 3 transects were laid with varying levels of anthropogenic disturbance. To understand how the hydro power project could effect the pheasant population in the Jiwa Valley, we monitored it under two conditions; in the presence of hydro-electric project (HEP) construction and when human activity significantly declined. The Koklass Pheasant (Pucrasiamacrolopha), Cheer Pheasant (Catreus wallichi) and Western Tragopan (Tragopan melanocephalus) were not recorded in Manjhan Adit in 2009. During 2010 and 2011 springs, the construction activity was temporarily discontinued in Manjhan Adit. The pheasants responded positively to this and their abundance increased near disturbed sites (Manjhan Adit). The strong response of pheasants to anthropogenic disturbance has ecological application and thus can be used by wildlife management in the habitat quality monitoring in the Himalayan Mountains.

    Abstract The PREDICTS project-Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems (www.predicts.org.uk)-has collated from published studies a large, reasonably representative database of comparable samples of biodiversity from multiple sites that differ in the nature or intensity of human impacts relating to land use. We have used this evidence base to develop global and regional statistical models of how local biodiversity responds to these measures. We describe and make freely available this 2016 release of the database, containing more than 3.2 million records sampled at over 26,000 locations and representing over 47,000 species. We outline how the database can help in answering a range of questions in ecology and conservation biology. To our knowledge, this is the largest and most geographically and taxonomically representative database of spatial comparisons of biodiversity that has been collated to date; it will be useful to researchers and international efforts wishing to model and understand the global status of biodiversity.
