Abstract Von Neumann architecture-based computing, while widely successful in personal computers and embedded systems, faces inherent challenges including the von Neumann bottleneck, particularly amidst the ongoing surge of data-intensive tasks. Neuromorphic computing, designed to integrate arithmetic, logic, and memory operations, has emerged as a promising solution for improving energy efficiency and performance. This approach requires the construction of an artificial synaptic device that can simultaneously perform signal processing, learning, and memory operations. We present a photo-synaptic device with 32 analog multi-states by exploiting field-effect transistors based on the lateral heterostructures of two-dimensional (2D) WS

Abstract A neural networks (NN) compensator is designed for systems with multi-segment piecewise-linear nonlinearities. The compensator uses the back stepping technique with NN for inverting the multi-segment piecewise-linear nonlinearities in the feedforward path. This scheme provides a general procedure for determining the dynamic pre-inversion of an invertible dynamic system using NN. A tuning algorithm is presented for the NN compensator which yields a stable closed-loop system. In the case of nonlinear stability proofs, the tracking error is small. It is noted that PI controller without NN compensation requires much higher gain to achieve same performance. It is also difficult to ensure the stability of such highly nonlinear systems using only PI controllers. Using NN compensation, stability of the system is proven, and tracking errors can be arbitrarily kept small by increasing the gain. The NN weight errors are basically bounded in terms of input weight and hidden weight. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the piecewise linear NN compensator in the system. This scheme is applicable to xy table-like servo system and shows neural network stability proofs. In addition, the NN piecewise linear nonlinearity compensation can be further and applied to backlash, hysteresis, and another actuator nonlinear compensation.

Abstract This study aimed to classify emotion based on facial expression and physiological signals using deep learning and to compare the analyzed results. We asked 53 subjects to make facial expressions, expressing four types of emotion. Next, the emotion-inducing video was watched for 1 min, and the physiological signals were obtained. We defined four emotions as positive and negative emotions and designed three types of deep-learning models that can classify emotions. Each model used facial expressions and physiological signals as inputs, and a model in which these two types of input were applied simultaneously was also constructed. The accuracy of the model was 81.54% when physiological signals were used, 99.9% when facial expressions were used, and 86.2% when both were used. Constructing a deep-learning model with only facial expressions showed good performance. The results of this study confirm that the best approach for classifying emotion is using only facial expressions rather than data from multiple inputs. However, this is an opinion presented only in terms of accuracy without considering the computational cost, and it is suggested that physiological signals and multiple inputs be used according to the situation and research purpose.

Abstract Background and study aim: Gastric endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is a curative treatment for gastric neoplasm. A scheduled second-look endoscopy could be performed to prevent delayed post-ESD bleeding. However, no studies on the efficacy of second-look endoscopy for the prevention of early delayed post-ESD bleeding have been conducted. So, the aim of this study was to be the first to investigate the efficacy of immediate second-look endoscopy for the prevention of post-ESD bleeding.
Patients and methods: The 266 gastric ESD cases were included. Immediate second-look endoscopy was defined as repeated upper endoscopy soon after complete hemostasis of the ESD site and specimen fixation. Early and late delayed bleeding were classified as before or after 24 h after the ESD, respectively.
Results: The 262 ESD cases were enrolled and divided into three groups: the immediate second-look (n = 79), scheduled second-look (n = 86), and no second-look (n = 97). Post-ESD bleeding occurred in 19 cases (7.3%). Of these, 13 (68.4%) were early delayed post-ESD bleeding. The immediate second-look endoscopy had a lower incidence of early delayed post-ESD bleeding compared to the groups without immediate second-look endoscopy, (3.8% vs. 0.8%, p = 0.009). In a multivariate analysis, immediate second-look endoscopy significantly reduced early delayed post-ESD bleeding (OR 0.39, p = 0.022). The resected specimen area ≥ 1,000 mm
Conclusion: Immediate second-look endoscopy after gastric ESD may prevent early delayed post-ESD bleeding under certain circumstances.

Abstract In this paper, a convolutional neural network-based registration framework is proposed for remote sensing to improve the registration accuracy between two remote-sensed images acquired from different times and viewpoints. The proposed framework consists of four stages. In the first stage, key-points are extracted from two input images—a reference and a sensed image. Then, a patch is constructed at each key-point. The second stage consists of three processes for patch matching—candidate patch pair list generation, one-to-one matched label selection, and geometric distortion compensation. One-to-one matched patch pairs between two images are found, and the exact matching is found by compensating for geometric distortions in the matched patch pairs. A global geometric affine parameter set is computed using the random sample consensus algorithm (RANSAC) algorithm in the third stage. Finally, a registered image is generated after warping the input sensed image using the affine parameter set. The proposed high-accuracy registration framework is evaluated using the KOMPSAT-3 dataset by comparing the conventional frameworks based on machine learning and deep-learning-based frameworks. The proposed framework obtains the least root mean square error value of 34.922 based on all control points and achieves a 68.4% increase in the matching accuracy compared with the conventional registration framework.

Abstract Small bowel capsule endoscopy (SBCE) is one of the most useful methods for diagnosing small bowel mucosal lesions. However, it takes a long time to interpret the capsule images. To solve this problem, artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms for SBCE readings are being actively studied. In this article, we analyzed several studies that applied AI algorithms to SBCE readings, such as automatic lesion detection, automatic classification of bowel cleanliness, and automatic compartmentalization of small bowels. In addition to automatic lesion detection using AI algorithms, a new direction of AI algorithms related to shorter reading times and improved lesion detection accuracy should be considered. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an integrated AI algorithm composed of algorithms with various functions in order to be used in clinical practice.

Abstract In the case of complete surgical resection of locally aggressive thyroid mass with severely compromised airways, airway management is difficult and can be considerably risky. We report a case of airway management using i-gel™ and cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) with venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), which is a safe and feasible method of airway management for providing general anesthesia in a patient with a large thyroid mass.

Abstract Abstract Small bowel capsule endoscopy (SBCE) may need to be performed immediately after colonoscopy without additional bowel preparation if active small bowel diseases are suspected. However, it is unclear whether the small bowel cleanliness is adequately maintained even after SBCE is performed immediately after colonoscopy. We compared the small bowel cleanliness scores of the study group (SBCE immediately after colonoscopy) and control group (SBCE alone) using a validated artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm (cut-off score > 3.25 for adequate). Cases of SBCE in which polyethylene glycol was used were included retrospectively. Among 85 enrolled cases, 50 cases (58.8%) were the study group. The mean time from the last dose of purgative administration to SBCE was 6.86 ± 0.94 h in the study group and 3.00 ± 0.18 h in the control group. Seventy-five cases (88.2%) were adequate small bowel cleanliness, which was not different between the two groups. The mean small bowel cleanliness score for the study group was 3.970 ± 0.603, and for the control group was 3.937 ± 0.428. In the study group, better colon preparation resulted in a higher small bowel cleanliness score (p = 0.015). Small bowel cleanliness was also adequately maintained in SBCE immediately after colonoscopy. There was no difference between the time and volume of purgative administration and small bowel cleanliness.
