Abstract Medical image compression is a widely studied field of data processing due to its prevalence in modern digital databases. This domain requires a high color depth of 12 bits per pixel component for accurate analysis by physicians, primarily in the DICOM format. Standard raster-based compression of images via filtering is well-known; however, it remains suboptimal in the medical domain due to non-specialized implementations. This study proposes a lossless medical image compression algorithm, CompaCT, that aims to target spatial features and patterns of pixel concentration for dynamically enhanced data processing. The algorithm employs fractal pixel traversal coupled with a novel approach of segmentation and meshing between pixel blocks for preprocessing. Furthermore, delta and entropy coding are applied to this concept for a complete compression pipeline. The proposal demonstrates that the data compression achieved via fractal segmentation preprocessing yields enhanced image compression results while remaining lossless in its reconstruction accuracy. CompaCT is evaluated in its compression ratios on 3954 high-color CT scans against the efficiency of industry-standard compression techniques (i.e., JPEG2000, RLE, ZIP, PNG). Its reconstruction performance is assessed with error metrics to verify lossless image recovery after decompression. The results demonstrate that CompaCT can compress and losslessly reconstruct medical images, being 37% more space-efficient than industry-standard compression systems.

Abstract Indians have early onset atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and acquire the risk factors at a younger age, and hence we need to aggressively address the management of dyslipidemia in the young. Cholesterol levels early in life will influence the development of atherosclerosis. Young atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) patients (18-40 yrs) should receive lipid-lowering drugs to reduce LDL-C<55 mg. Due to the asymptomatic nature of dyslipidemia, early screening will enable the implementation of management strategies which will decrease future cardiovascular events. In this review, we will provide insights into identifying and managing dyslipidemia in the 18-40 years age group (young adults). It is suggested that early detection and more aggressive management of dyslipidemia in young adults with or without risk factors like diabetes, hypertension, tobacco and central obesity, might reduce the risk of CV events occurring later in life. Although lifestyle modification is the mainstay of treatment (dietary recommendations, exercise, tobacco cessation, weight reduction, etc.) but in certain young adults we suggest use of statins in low dose or non-statin drugs if they have associated risk factors, LDL-C >160 mg or a high coronary calcium score. Young adults who are carriers of FH gene should receive aggressive lifestyle modification and appropriate antilipidemic therapy.

Abstract The Deccan Volcanic Provinces (DVP) is one of the Largest Igneous Province (LIP) of the world covering an area of half a million sq. km in central and western India. Due to the blanketing by the lava flows the geology and tectonics of sub-basalt remain speculative both in terms of resources as well as hazards assessment. However, recent advances in instrumentation & processing methodology leading to refined interpretation techniques have contributed to a quantum jump in the application of geophysical techniques to sub-basalt exploration as well as understanding the crustal configuration. In this study, we have utilized ground geopotential data (gravity and magnetic) with constraints from other studies to look at the structures below the basaltic terrain. From the combined analysis of the geopotential data, we could delineate the extension of several lineaments/faults, schist belts, etc below the trap cover. For the first time, we have identified several NE-SW trending lineaments within the DVP cutting across the NW-SE lineaments and giving rise to block structural architecture within the DVP. To have a better insight into the rheological, thermal, and petrological details of the study area we have computed the moho depth using inversion of gravity data while the depth to the bottom of the magnetic sources was computed using the power spectral methods. Combined two-dimensional modeling along two profiles provided better insights into the structures below the traps. The results of these analyses will be presented.

Abstract In the current climate of uncertainty over trainee working conditions and uneasy medical politics, more and more trainees are choosing to take planned time out of training. This is no longer considered an activity that unnecessarily prolongs one's training, and is generally welcomed by trainees and training programme directors alike.

Abstract In plant growth experiments, the presence of microplastics (MPs) often reduces plant growth. We conducted laboratory experiments to investigate the potential of microplastics to adsorb the major soil nutrient phosphate; adsorption to MPs was then compared to adsorption to soil. Adsorption experiments used two contrasting soils, pristine high density polyethylene and artificially weathered material (the same material but exposed to 185 nm UV light for 420 h over 105 days), phosphate solutions (dissolved KH

Abstract Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a non-invasive imaging modality used for estimating the conductivity of an object Ω from boundary electrode measurements. In recent years, researchers achieved substantial progress in analytical and numerical methods for the EIT inverse problem. Despite the success, numerical instability is still a major hurdle due to many factors, including the discretization error of the problem. Furthermore, most algorithms with good performance are relatively time consuming and do not allow real-time applications. In our approach, the goal is to separate the unknown conductivity into two regions, namely the region of homogeneous background conductivity and the region of non-homogeneous conductivity. Therefore, we pose and solve the problem of shape reconstruction using machine learning. We propose a novel and simple jet intriguing neural network architecture capable of solving the EIT inverse problem. It addresses previous difficulties, including instability, and is easily adaptable to other ill-posed coefficient inverse problems. That is, the proposed model estimates the probability for a point of whether the conductivity belongs to the background region or to the non-homogeneous region on the continuous space Rd∩Ω with d∈{2,3}. The proposed model does not make assumptions about the forward model and allows for solving the inverse problem in real time. The proposed machine learning approach for shape reconstruction is also used to improve gradient-based methods for estimating the unknown conductivity. In this paper, we propose a piece-wise constant reconstruction method that is novel in the inverse problem setting but inspired by recent approaches from the 3D vision community. We also extend this method into a novel constrained reconstruction method. We present extensive numerical experiments to show the performance of the architecture and compare the proposed method with previous analytic algorithms, mainly the monotonicity-based shape reconstruction algorithm and iteratively regularized Gauss-Newton method.
