Abstract Recent outbreaks of both new and existing infectious pathogens have threatened healthcare systems around the world. Therefore, it is vital to detect and neutralize pathogens to prevent their spread and treat infected patients. This consideration has led to the development of biosensors and antibiotics inspired by the structure and function of antibodies and antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), which constitute adaptive and innate immunity, efficiently protecting the human body against invading pathogens. Herein, we provide an overview of recent advances in the detection and neutralization of pathogens using protein-mimetic peptoid nanoarchitectures. Peptoids are bio-inspired and sequence-defined polymers composed of repeating

Abstract The US spends two times more than the OECD average in health expenditure but has a much smaller portion of public health spending to total health expenditure than other OECD countries. While it has been suggested that public health and social services spending is crucial to promoting health outcomes, less is known about what drives variations in public health expenditure across regions. This study aims to examine whether political fragmentation in local governance is associated with variations in public health and social services expenditures. Using the US Census of Governments, we constructed a panel dataset of political fragmentation and local government spending patterns (1997-2012) for 792 US counties (population > 60,882, top 25%) and employed Least Squares Dummy Variable (LSDV) and Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) models. We found that per capita public health spending tended to be smaller in areas where the degree of political fragmentation was higher (Coef:  - 0.034; p < 0.01), particularly when general-purpose governments were more fragmented (Coef:  - 0.087; p < 0.001). The proportion of public health spending also decreased when local governments were more fragmented (Coef:  - 0.012; p < 0.001). Social services expenditures and their proportions to total government expenditure fell with an increase in the degree of political fragmentation. Our findings suggest that fragmented governance settings, in which localities are more likely to face competition with others, may lead to a reduction in public spending essential for population health and that political fragmentation can also have a deterrent effect on broader categories of health-related social services spending.

Abstract Lignocellulosic bioethanol production by Saccharomyces cerevisiae is constrained by different stresses. The main aim of this work was to study the complexities and identify the genes associated with the yeast stress response by using NGS-based high throughput RNA-seq analysis. In this study, a bioethanol-producing S. cerevisiae strain, NCIM3186, treated with 4% glucose for 4 h, 8% (v/v) ethanol for 2 h, and 1 g L⁻¹ furfural for 4 h was employed for Illumina-based RNA-seq analysis. Comparative RNA-seq analysis and differential gene expression profiling using de novo assembled transcripts have unveiled 573 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), wherein thiamine metabolism genes, SOD2, GRE2, GLR1, HSP12, and GLC7 under furfural stress; TDH1, HSP26, glucose-sensing SNF1, SSA3, HXK1, SNF1, STR3, ATG1, and HXT7 under ethanol stress; and MSN2, TPS2, SNF2, MEP3, PHO4, and STE20 under glucose stress treatments were highly up-regulated (> twofold). Moreover, seven (TPS1, TPS2, SIN3, PTK2, SSQ1, ZAP1, DOA4) out of nine stuck fermentome genes which are essential for the timely completion of fermentation process have shown significant expression under stress. The expression of highly up-regulated genes, TDH1, HXT6, THI13, and HSP12, and two other unknown genes (UK-1, UK-2) were experimentally validated using qRT-PCR analysis. The expression pattern of DEGs in NCIM3186 signified the key role of oxidative stress response, trehalose accumulation, heat shock proteins, and thiamine metabolism under stress. This study serves as a significant value addition to RNA-seq-based research for the identification of stress associated genes in host yeast strains to be used in bioethanol production.

Abstract Background: We conducted this study to assess preliminary 2-year safety outcomes of an implant-based augmentation mammaplasty using the BellaGel® SmoothFine in the context of the first Korean case of a medical device fraud.
Methods: Our clinical series of the patients (n = 579; 1,158 breasts) received augmentation using the BellaGel® SmoothFine, Naturgel™, Motiva Ergonomix™, Eurosilicone Round Collection™, Natrelle® INSPIRA™, Natrelle® 410, Mentor® MemoryGel Xtra or Microthane®. The patients were evaluated for incidences of postoperative complications and Kaplan-Meier survival and hazards.
Results: Overall, there were a total of 101 cases (17.4%) of postoperative complications; these include 31 cases (5.4%) of shape deformity, 21 cases (3.6%) of CC, 18 cases (3.1%) of early seroma, 8 cases (1.4%) of infection, 5 cases (0.9%) of early hematoma, 1 case (0.2%) of delayed hematoma, 1 case (0.2%) of rupture and 1 case (0.2%) of ripping. Moreover, there were also 15 cases (2.6%) of other complications. There were significant differences in incidences of postoperative complications between the breast implants from different manufacturers (P = 0.034). The Natrelle® 410 showed the longest survival (333.3±268.2 [141.5-525.1] days). A subgroup analysis showed that there were no significant differences in incidences of postoperative complications between the breast implants (P = 0.831). Moreover, the Natrelle® INSPIRA™ showed the longest survival (223.7±107.1 [-42.3-489.6] days).
Conclusions: Here, we describe preliminary 2-year safety outcomes of an implant-based augmentation mammaplasty using the BellaGel® SmoothFine in the context of the first Korean case of a medical device fraud.
