    Abstract Studies were undertaken to investigate host relationships of populations of Bemisiu tubuci taken from the major crop hosts in Uganda. B. tubuci adults taken from cotton and sweet potato did not colonize cassava. None survived for longer than two days and nymphs emerging from eggs laid on cassava died. Cassava B. tubaci in contrast showed limited colonization on cotton and sweet potato and adults emerging from cotton retained the ability to colonize cassava, confirming the genetic basis of the distinction between 'strains' suggested by previous isozyme studies. The implications of these findings with regard to the role of B. tubuci in the epidemiology of African cassava mosaic geminivirus are discussed.

    Abstract During the 1990s, an epidemic of an unusually severe form of cassava mosaic virus disease (CMD) has expanded to cover virtually all of Uganda, and substantial areas in the neighbouring countries of Kenya, Tanzania, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Losses in the generally sensitive local cassava cultivars have been so great that a common farmer response to the problem has been the temporary abandonment of cassava cultivation. As a consequence, the CMD `pandemic' has had a significant destabilising effect on food security in East Africa. In attempting to combat the problem, vigorous efforts have been made to identify, multiply and disseminate resistant cassava germplasm. This has included cultivars obtained from the breeding programme of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), based in Nigeria, as well as local selections derived from IITA parent stock. Whilst considerable success has been realised in controlling the pandemic in Uganda, addressing the problem at the regional level remains a major challenge. This article reviews progress made in recent years, both in understanding the cause and mechanisms behind the pandemic's expansion, and in developing strategies to control it. Particular attention is drawn to the likely threat the pandemic poses to cassava production in the countries of central Africa, most notably the Democratic Republic of Congo, where insecurity currently impedes an assessment of the problem and the ready implementation of control measures. Scientists and other stakeholders with an interest in CMD management are therefore urged to explore innovative mechanisms that will allow them to develop a more comprehensive approach to CMD control in the region.

    Abstract The ecology of the Bemisia tabaci/cassava/African cassava mosaic virus (ACMV) pathosystem is reviewed briefly with special attention given to the parameters affecting the pattern of population development of B. tabaci. Significant gaps in our understanding of this system remain, particularly concerning the importance of interactions of B. tabaci with other arthropod pests of cassava and the influence of ecological factors such as soil nutrients indirectly through their effects upon cassava. An holistic ecological approach to future work on B. tabaci as vector of ACMV is proposed.

    Abstract Cassava mosaic disease (CMD), recognized in Africa for more than a century, is now known to be caused by a group of geminiviruses in the genus Begomovirus from the family Geminiviridae. All are transmitted in a persistent manner by the whitefly vector, Bemisia tabaci. Structurally, cassava mosaic geminiviruses (CMGs) are comprised of two small, single-stranded, circular DNA molecules, DNA-A and DNA-B, each of which is encapsidated within a geminate coat. CMG infection results in symptoms comprising misshapen leaves with a mosaic-like chlorosis and general plant stunting, leading to reduced tuberous root production. Through the processes of virus-virus synergism, pseudo-recombination and true recombination, CMGs have evolved into a diverse and highly successful group of plant pathogens and seven species are currently recognized from Africa. Rapid spread of a recombinant strain, East African cassava mosaic virus-Uganda (EACMV-UG), has been associated with a pandemic of unusually severe CMD, which has affected much of East and Central Africa, leading to production losses of 47%, equivalent to nearly 14 million tonnes. Although the deployment of conventionally-bred host plant resistance is the main approach being used to manage CMGs, with considerable success, increased attention is being given to the development of transgenic resistance strategies.
