Abstract With the explosive growth of intelligent and mobile devices, the current centralized cloud computing paradigm is encountering difficult challenges. Since the primary requirements have shifted towards implementing real-time response and supporting context awareness and mobility, there is an urgent need to bring resources and functions of centralized clouds to the edge of networks, which has led to the emergence of the edge computing paradigm. Edge computing increases the responsibilities of network edges by hosting computation and services, therefore enhancing performances and improving quality of experience (QoE). Fog computing, multi-access edge computing (MEC), and cloudlet are three typical and promising implementations of edge computing. Fog computing aims to build a system that enables cloud-to-thing service connectivity and works in concert with clouds, MEC is seen as a key technology of the fifth generation (5G) system, and Cloudlet is a micro-data center deployed in close proximity. In terms of deployment scenarios, Fog computing focuses on the Internet of Things (IoT), MEC mainly provides mobile RAN application solutions for 5G systems, and cloudlet offloads computing power at the network edge. In this paper, we present a comprehensive case study on these three edge computing implementations, including their architectures, differences, and their respective application scenario in IoT, 5G wireless systems, and smart edge. We discuss the requirements, benefits, and mechanisms of typical co-deployment cases for each paradigm and identify challenges and future directions in edge computing.

Abstract Aim: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of small-diameter acellular porcine corneal stroma (SAPS) for the treatment of peripheral corneal ulceration (PCU).
Methods: This retrospective clinical study included 18 patients (18 eyes) with PCU between April 2018 and December 2020. All patients had PCU and underwent lamellar keratoplasty with SAPS. Observation indicators included preoperative and postoperative best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and transparency of SAPS. The infection control rate in the surgical eye-lesion area was also calculated.
Results: Eighteen patients underwent lamellar keratoplasty with SAPS to treat PCU. None of the patients experienced rejection after 6mo (18/18) and 12mo (16/16) of follow-up. The BCVA (0.47±0.30) at the 6mo follow-up after operation was significantly improved compared with the baseline (0.99±0.80), and the difference was statistically significant (
Conclusion: SAPS is clinically effective in the treatment of PCU, improving the patient's BCVA and reducing the incidence of rejection after keratoplasty.

Abstract Toxocariasis is an important zoonotic parasitic disease. Toxocaris canis adults live and reproduce in the intestinal tract of dogs and other canine hosts, and the infectious eggs are continuously excreted in feces, which causes environmental contamination and has an important public health significance. In this study, TMT proteomic and untargeted metabolomic methods were used to explore the physiological and pathological effects on the intestinal tract of dogs which infected with T. canis, and a series of bioinformatics analyses were conducted to identify differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) and differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs). The proteomics results showed that 198 DEPs were mainly enriched in the immune system and signal transduction pathway, and involved in the regulation of the occurrence and development of cancer and infectious diseases. T. canis could disrupt intestinal permeability by increasing the expression of proteins such as zinc finger protein DZIP1L and myosin heavy chain 10. Additionally, T. canis infection could also inhibit the host immune response by decreasing the expression of MHC-II, NF-κB, DLA and other immune-related molecules. While, the metabolomics results revealed that the expression of oxoglutaric acid, glutamate, d-aspartate, arginine, taurochenodeoxycholic acid and taurocholic acid which participated in tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, bile secretion, biosynthesis of amino acids pathway were significantly decreased. The correlation results of proteomics and metabolomics showed that DEPs and DEMs were mainly co-enriched in bile secretion pathway to regulate intestinal peristalsis. Analyzing DEPs and DEMs will not only provide insights into the mechanisms of host parasite interaction, but also aid in identifying potential targets for therapy and diagnosis, thus setting the groundwork for effectively preventing and managing toxocariasis.

Abstract At present, fully mechanized cultivation (FMC) has begun to be utilized in commercial sugarcane production in China. To provide new insights into whether cane yield and health are altered by fully mechanized cultivations, the cane yield and endophytic microbial community structure in stems of sugarcane that underwent fully mechanized cultivation (FMC) and conventional artificial cultivation (CAC) were compared. The results showed that the diversity and richness of endophytic microorganisms, except for the bacterial richness in the stems of sugarcane, could be significantly increased by using FMC. Meanwhile, in comparison with CAC, the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Ascomycota increased under FMC. Moreover, some dominant endophytic bacterial genera, such as Acidovorax, Microbacterium, and Paenibacillus, and some dominant endophytic fungal genera, such as Scleroramularia, Tetraplosphaeria, and Dinemasporium, were found to be significantly enriched in cane stems under FMC treatments. Additionally, the endophytic microbial functions in sugarcane stems were not significantly altered by FMC treatments. Our results suggest that cane growth, yield, and health are not significantly altered by FMC. The results also indicate that fully mechanized management can be developed as a sustainable method in sugarcane production.

Abstract To provide new insights into whether soil health and fertility in realistic sugarcane production are destroyed by full mechanized cultivation (FMC), we investigated the differential structures and functions of soil bacterial and fungal communities by FMC and conventional artificial cultivation (CAC) treatments in sugarcane fields. The results showed that the soil water, total phosphorus, available nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium contents significantly increased, but soil bulk density and pH significantly decreased in the FMC treatment compared with the CAC treatment. The activities of soil enzymes such as β-glucosidase, aminopeptidase, and acid phosphatase changed irregularly. Compared with the CAC treatment, significantly higher β-glucosidase activity and significantly lower aminopeptidase and acid phosphatase activities were detected in the FMC treatment. The soil microbial biomass carbon and microbial biomass phosphorus (MBP) increased; in particular, significant increases in MBP were observed in the FMC treatment. In contrast, soil microbial biomass nitrogen significantly decreased in the FMC treatment. In addition, mechanized cultivation altered soil microbial community structures and their metabolite profiles in sugarcane fields. Although soil bacterial diversity and abundance were significantly reduced, fungal abundance was not significantly different in the FMC treatment. Moreover, compared with CAC treatments, Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Acidothermus, Chujaibacter, Conexibacter, and Longimycelium, were significantly enriched in the FMC treatments. In addition, fungal community composition, only Gymnopilus at the genus level was significantly enriched in the FMC treatment. Eight differential metabolites were detected in soils of sugarcane fields between the FMC and CAC treatments and were also found in background (BG) soil. Among them, only organic acids and sugars were positively or negatively correlated with the abundance of different bacteria. Starch and sucrose metabolism were the most differentially expressed metabolic pathways between the FMC and CAC treatments. These results suggest that FMC did not destroy soil health and fertility in sugarcane fields.

Abstract The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the role of MARK4 in the regulation of oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction in pig placental trophoblasts and analyze the signaling pathways involved. In this study, we found that enhanced MARK4 contributed to augmented oxidative stress in pig trophoblasts, as evidenced by decreased total antioxidant capacity (TAC); higher production of reactive oxygen species (ROS); elevated protein carbonylation; and reduced SOD, CAT, and GSH-PX activities. Further analyses revealed MARK4 impaired mitochondrial oxidative respiration in cultured trophoblasts, which was associated with reduced ATP content, decreased mitochondrial membrane potential, lower mitochondrial Complexes I and III activities, and down-regulated protein contents of subunits of complexes I, II, and V. At same time, mitochondrial biogenesis and structure were negatively altered by elevated MARK4. By antioxidant treatment with vitamin E (VE), oxidative stress along with impaired mitochondrial function induced by enhanced MARK4 were blocked. Furthermore, we found activation of AMPK signaling prevented MARK4 from blocking mitochondrial biogenesis and function in pig trophoblast cells. Finally, we demonstrated that the IKKα/NF-κB signal pathway was involved in MARK4 activated oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. Thus, these data suggest that MARK4 promotes oxidative stress and mitochondrial injury in porcine placental trophoblasts and can contribute to the developing of knowledge of pathological processes leading to mitochondrial dysfunction associated with excessive back-fat in the pig placenta and to the obesity-associated pregnant syndrome.

Abstract In order to study the transmission of rabies epidemics in vampire bats, we propose a mathematical model for vampire bat rabies virus. A threshold R0 is identified which determines the outcome of the disease. If R0<1, the disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable, and if R0>1, the endemic equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable with certain conditions. Through the numerical simulation, the correctness of the theoretical results is verified. We carry out the sensitivity analysis of the parameters which provide a theoretical basis for preventing and controlling the transmission of bat rabies.

Abstract The drug encapsulation efficiency, release rate and time, sustained release, and stimulus-response of carriers are very important for drug delivery. However, these always cannot obtained for the carrier with a single component. To improve the comprehensive performance of chitosan-based carriers for 5-Fu delivery, diatomite-incorporated hydroxypropyl cellulose/chitosan (DE/HPC/CS) composite aerogel microspheres were fabricated for the release of 5-fluorouracil (5-Fu), and the release performance was regulated with the content of diatomite, pH value, and external coating material. Firstly, the 5-Fu loaded DE/HPC/CS composite aerogel microspheres and Eudragit L100 coated microspheres were prepared with cross-linking followed by freeze-drying, and characterized by SEM, EDS, FTIR, XRD, DSC, TG, and swelling. The obtained aerogel microspheres have a diameter of about 0.5 mm, the weight percentage of F and Si elements on the surface are 0.55 % and 0.78 % respectively. The glass transition temperature increased from 179 °C to 181 °C and 185 °C with the incorporation of DE and coating of Eudragit, and the equilibrium swelling percentage of DE/HPC/CS (1.5:3:2) carriers are 101.52 %, 45.27 %, 67.32 % at pH 1.2, 5.0, 7.4, respectively. Then, the effect of DE content on the drug loading efficiency of DE/HPC/CS@5-Fu was investigated, with the increase of DE content, the highest encapsulation efficiency was 82.6 %. Finally, the release behavior of DE incorporated and Eudragit L100 Coated microspheres were investigated under different pH values, and evaluated with four kinetic models. The results revealed that the release rate of 5-Fu decreased with the increase of DE content, sustained release with extending time and pH-responsive were observed for the Eudragit-coated aerogel microspheres.

Abstract The aim is to investigate the relationship between serum coagulation parameters (PT, APTT, D-D and FDP) before hospitalization and recurrence of chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH). 236 patients with CSDH who were diagnosed for the first time and had complete medical records were followed up for at least 90 days. Fifty patients (21.2%) had relapsed. Univariate analysis was conducted including general data, imaging data and test results. Serum coagulation parameters (PT, APTT, D-D and FDP) were detected for all CSDH patients. The study identified several factors that exhibited a significant correlation with chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) recurrence. These factors included advanced age (p = 0.01), hypertension (p = 0.04), liver disease (p = 0.01), anticoagulant drug use (p = 0.01), antiplatelet drug use (p = 0.02), bilateral hematoma (p = 0.02), and single-layer hematoma (p = 0.01). In addition, the presence of fibrin/fibrinogen degradation products (FDP) exceeding 5 mg/L demonstrated a significant relationship with CSDH recurrence (P < 0.05). Notably, the combined assessment of D-dimer (D-D) and FDP exhibited a significant difference, particularly regarding recurrence within 30 days after surgery (P < 0.05). The simultaneous elevation of serum FDP and D-D levels upon admission represents a potentially novel predictor for CSDH recurrence. This finding is particularly relevant for patients who experience recurrence within 30 days following surgical intervention. Older individuals with CSDH who undergo trepanation and drainage should be closely monitored due to their relatively higher recurrence rate.

Abstract The cleanup and redevelopment of industrially contaminated land are essential for sustainable urban development, both from economic and environmental perspectives. Remediation efforts in developed countries have incurred high decontamination costs and administrative, monitoring, and enforcement requirements that are beyond the capabilities of many developing nations. Here, we reviewed the development of cement kiln co-processing of contaminated soils, a commonly used remediation strategy in China, and discussed the spatio-temporal features, benefits and efficiency of co-processing. Our results show that urbanization, the real estate market, and policies have impacts on the development of technology. By June 2021, cement kiln co-processing has disposed of approximately 2,633, 823 m³ of contaminated soils, and the average feed rates of organic pollutants, combined pollution, and heavy metals are 6%, 4%, and 3%, respectively. The average cost of co-processing contaminated soil is US$167.2 per cubic meter, which is lower than that of other conventional remedies. Based on the pollution status and cement production capacity, it is most likely that the co-processing strategy will be adopted by three countries of India, Indonesia, and Vietnam in the next few years. In the future, more data will be needed to quantify and assess the technology diffusion at the provincial level and the technological details of adopting this strategy.
