Abstract Formation of excessive blisters and sores on the mouth of affected cattle with Foot-and-Mouth disease and the insufficiency of existing therapeutic methods, leads to extensive damages to the affected herds. The extract of Hypericum perforatum and its active ingredient, Hypericin, have inhibitory effects on the adsorption ability of Foot-and-Mouth virus to host cells in vitro. The medicinal plant also has an effective role in healing various kinds of wounds. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of H. perforatum extract on the healing of FMD oral lesions in affected cattle. In this study, 72 affected cattle (36 heads in 3 treatment groups of 12 and 36 heads in 3 control groups of 12) from 3 conflict centers in West-Azarbaijan province were selected. Determination of serotype by complement fixation method indicated that the studied animals were infected with serotype O of FMD. Dry aerial parts of H. perforatum were extracted with maceration method and 0.25, 0.5 and 5% concentrations of hydroalcoholic extract were prepared. In control groups, normal saline solution and in treatment groups, the extract with the mentioned concentrations was used as an oral spray (twice a day for 4 days). Cattle treated with 5% extract had a significant improvement in oral lesions and lesion repair during the treatment period was significantly different from the control groups (p<0.05). The results showed that spraying 5% concentration of H. perforatum extract had significant healing effects on oral lesions caused by FMD.

Abstract Background: Plastic and cosmetic surgery is one of the most unique and less well-known surgical specialties. The aim of this study was to compare knowledge of medical students in pre-clinical and clinical course of Guilan University of Medical Sciences in the specialty field of plastic & cosmetic surgery. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in educational hospitals of Guilan University of Medical Sciences. A total of 866 students in two groups of clinical and preclinical students were participated in the study. Research instrument was a questionnaire composed of 31 questions about knowledge toward plastic and cosmetic surgery including general, craniofacial, and cosmetic questions. Results: The mean age of participants was 22.5 (SD = 2.5) and 57.2% were female. Twenty-four percent had a history of plastic and cosmetic surgery. Students in clinical course had significantly higher knowledge toward all three aspects of general, cosmetic and craniofacial questions compared to clinical students. The result of multivariate linear regression showed that the course level, sex, interest score to the field of surgery, and source of information were independently associated with knowledge. Conclusion: This study found that clinical students had significantly higher knowledge toward the field of cosmetic surgery than pre-clinical students.

Abstract HPVs are DNA viruses include approximately 450 types that are classified into 5 genera (α-, β-, γ-, μ-, and ν-HPV). The γ- and β-HPVs are present in low copy numbers in healthy individuals; however, in patients with an inborn error of immunity, certain species of β-HPVs can cause epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV), manifesting as recalcitrant cutaneous warts and skin cancer. EV presents as either typical or atypical. Manifestations of typical EV are limited to the skin and are caused by abnormal keratinocyte-intrinsic immunity to β-HPVs due to pathogenic sequence variants in TMC6, TMC8, or CIB1. We applied a transcriptome-based computational pipeline, VirPy, to RNA extracted from normal-appearing skin and wart samples of patients with typical EV to explore the viral and human genetic determinants. In 26 patients, 9 distinct biallelic mutations were detected in TMC6, TMC8, and CIB1, 7 of which are previously unreported to our knowledge. Additionally, 20 different HPV species, including 3 α-HPVs, 16 β-HPVs, and 1 γ-HPV, were detected, 8 of which are reported here for the first time to our knowledge in patients with EV (β-HPV-37, -47, -80, -151, and -159; α-HPV-2 and -57; and γ-HPV-128). This study expands the TMC6, TMC8, and CIB1 sequence variant spectrum and implicates new HPV subtypes in the pathogenesis of typical EV.

Abstract Background and Objectives: Burn injuries are one of the most severe forms of trauma that are the cause of many disabilities, morbidities and mortalities, in addition to the high costs of hospital care, and psychological and emotional problems. This study was carried out with the aim of determining the epidemiology and outcome of burn injuries in burnt patients in Guilan province. Methods: In a study based on existing data, hospital records of all burn patients admitted in a specialized burn center in Guilan province from March 2008 to 2011, were reviewed. Data were analyzed including by chi-square test and t-test, and significance level was considered p<0.05. Results: A total of 2274 patients’ hospital records, 1495 (65.7%) men and 779 women (34.3%) women, with a mean age of 31.47±22.67 years were reviewed. The mortality rate was estimated to be 8.7%. Significant factors associated with mortality included: Adulthood, illiteracy, unemployment, rural residence, low socioeconomic status, and percentage of burn. No significant statistical association was found between mortality and education, social status, and appropriate job. Also, most of the burns had occurred at home, and the most common cause of burn in adults was flame and in children was boiling water. Conclusion: Considering the association of severity of complications of burn at home with low education and rural residence, it seems that public education for prevention of burns at home along with development of specialized multidisciplinary and centralized burn centers as effective actions are essential.
