Abstract We investigated (1) how nasal septal perforations (NSPs) modify nasal airflow and air-conditioning characteristics and (2) how the modifications of nasal airflow are influenced by the size and location of the NSP. Computed tomography scans of 14 subjects with NSPs were used to generate nasal cavity models. Virtual repair of NSPs was conducted to examine the sole effect of NSPs on airflow. The computational fluid dynamics technique was used to assess geometric and airflow parameters around the NSPs and in the nasopharynx. The net crossover airflow rate, the increased wall shear stress (WSS) and the surface water-vapor flux on the posterior surface of the NSPs were not correlated with the size of the perforation. After the virtual closure of the NSPs, the levels in relative humidity (RH), air temperature (AT) and nasal resistance did not improve significantly both in the choanae and nasopharynx. A geometric parameter associated with turbinate volume, the surface area-to-volume ratio (SAVR), was shown to be an important factor in the determination of the RH and AT, even in the presence of NSPs. The levels of RH and AT in the choanae and nasopharynx were more influenced by SAVR than the size and location of the NSPs.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to note how people recognize the green lifestyle and how much extra money they are willing to pay for it. An integrated model based on the theory of planned behavior was constructed, and data on the willingness to pay (WTP) for green lifestyles of 1377 respondents in five cities in East China were measured and calculated using the double-bounded dichotomous choice contingent valuation method (DBDC) combined with interval regression analysis. The results showed that the respondents were willing to pay an extra 81.8 yuan, 52.5 yuan, 38.9 yuan, 53.2 yuan, and 37.2 yuan per month for green food, clothing, travel, housing, and waste recycling, respectively. Attitude and moral norms were the strongest predictors of WTP for green clothing, travel, housing, and waste recycling. Perceived behavior control, environmental awareness, personal habits, subjective knowledge, gender, income, and education can affect a few kinds of green lifestyle’s WTP.

Abstract Toxic Microcystis blooms are widespread in aquatic bodies, posing major threats to aquatic and human life. Recently, bioflocculants have attracted considerable attention as a promising biomaterial for Microcystis management. In search of a novel organism that can produce an efficient bioflocculant for controlling harmful algae sustainably, the native gastropod Cipangopaludina chinensis was co-cultured continuously with toxic Microcystis under different initial algal cell densities. The bioflocculation effect of snail mucus on toxic Microcystis, microcystin removal, and toxin accumulation in snails was investigated. In addition, the properties of the adhesive mucus were characterized using microscopic, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and polysaccharide and proteome analyses. Microcystis cells were captured and flocculated by the snail mucus; removal efficiencies of up to 89.9% and 84.8% were achieved for microalgae and microcystin-leucine arginine (MC-LR), respectively, when co-cultured with C. chinensis for only one day. After nine-day exposure, less than 5.49 µg/kg DW microcystins accumulated in the snails, indicating safety for human consumption. The snail mucus contained 104.3 µg/mg protein and 72.7 µg/mg carbohydrate, which provide several functional groups beneficial for Microcystis bioflocculation. The main monosaccharide subunits of polysaccharides are galactose, galactosamine, glucosamine, fucose, glucose, and mannose. Most of them are key components of polysaccharides in many bioflocculants. Gene Ontology analysis indicated the protein enrichment in binding processes and catalytic activity, which may account for Microcystis bioflocculation via protein binding or enzymatic reactions. The findings indicate that native C. chinensis secretes adhesive mucus that can act as bioflocculant for toxic Microcystis from ambient water and can be an effective and eco-friendly tool for Microcystis suppression.

Abstract Digital technology-based online education is key to promoting high-quality development of higher education. Many studies have analyzed the effects of online education during the COVID-19 pandemic, but analyses based on large-scale data are lacking. This study uses a quasi-natural experiment during the COVID-19 pandemic to explore the short- and long-term relationships between emergency remote education (teaching and learning) and undergraduates’ academic record using multiple comparison analysis of variance (ANOVA) and multiple linear regression. The research data come from the academic record of 123,208 courses of 2622 undergraduates from the classes of 2017–2021 in a Chinese university, across nine semesters. The data do not satisfy the homogeneity of variance hypothesis test; therefore, a non-parametric test is adopted for hypothesis testing. The results show that: (1) In the online education semester, the students’ academic record improved substantially with low fluctuation and greater stability; (2) this improvement is more obvious for sophomores and juniors than for freshmen, and (3) online education during the pandemic period significantly improved the course scores of undergraduates, especially sophomores, in the following one or two semesters.

Abstract In this paper, the mechanical performance improvement of traditional penetration mortise–tenon (PMT) connections reinforced by self-tapping screws (STSs) were experimental and numerical studied. Four unreinforced penetration mortise–tenon connections and four STS-reinforced connections were experimentally investigated under monotonic and low-frequency cyclic loading. Besides, the numerical model of PMT connections reinforced by STSs with different diameters and yield strength were established and analyzed.Their failure modes, rotational stiffness, moment-resisting capacity, ductility, and seismic behavior were studied. The experimental results indicated that the STSs reinforcements could enhance the moment-resisting capacity of the penetration mortise–tenon connection. Compared with unreinforced connections, the initial stiffness of STS-reinforced connections increased by 75% with the moment-resisting capacity increasing by 69%, respectively. Furthermore, the STSs reinforcement method can effectively restrict the pull-out of tenon during the whole loading process. Numerical simulation results showed that the yield strength of STS has little effect on the moment-bearing behavior of the connection. The diameter of STS significantly influences the connection performance, and the diameter of 8 mm is suggested.

Abstract In order to study the mechanical performance and friction slip mechanism of the interface of a composite timber column under inclined deformation, the unilateral contact mechanical model of an ancient composite timber column under inclined deformation is proposed in this paper. According to the limit of the inclination angle of slip point and the limit of the inclination angle of slip surface, the failure modes of the combination’s interface can be divided into three stages: the fully sticky stage, the partially sticky stage and the sliding stage. The theoretical results of the sliding displacement and shear stiffness of the combination’s interface under the effect of iron hoops were obtained by using the elastic mechanics method. Based on the shear sliding test of a composite timber column’s interface under the effect of iron hoops, the influences of different parameters on the shear sliding performance of the combination’s interface were investigated. The test results show that the number and the spacing of the iron hoops and the inclination angle of the interface are important factors affecting the shear strength of the combination’s interface. The shear strength of the interface increased with the increase in the number of iron hoops and the inclination angle of the interface. Since hoop spacing that is too large or too small cannot effectively improve the shear capacity of the interface, there is an optimal value for the hoop spacing.

Abstract The dynamic characteristics of air-conditioning in the human nasal cavity during a respiratory cycle were investigated using unsteady numerical simulations to assess whether inhaled air is sufficiently conditioned by the nasal cavity. Variations in the epithelial surface temperature, surface heat, and water vapor fluxes were found to vary significantly during inspiration while providing substantial air conditioning to the inhaled air, but variations and magnitudes were significantly reduced during the expiration period. Air temperature (31.3-35.3 °C) and relative humidity (85.1-100 %) in the nasopharynx exhibited significant variations during inspiration. Flow rate-weighted average values of the air temperature and relative humidity during inspiration were estimated to be 32.0 °C and 89.1 %, respectively. Inhaled air did not attain alveolar conditions before reaching the nasopharynx, and was therefore thought to be insufficiently conditioned by the nasal cavity alone. A steady flow of approximately 250 mL/s appears to be useful for evaluating the accumulated thermal state of air in the nasopharynx during inspiration.

Abstract Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate protozoon that can infect all warm-blooded animals including humans. T. gondii afflicts one-third of the human population and is a detriment to the health of livestock and wildlife. Thus far, traditional drugs such as pyrimethamine and sulfadiazine used to treat T. gondii infection are inadequate as therapeutics due to relapse, long treatment period, and low efficacy in parasite clearance. Novel, efficacious drugs have not been available. Lumefantrine, as an antimalarial, is effective in killing T. gondii but has no known mechanism of action. We combined metabolomics with transcriptomics to investigate how lumefantrine inhibits T. gondii growth. We identified significant alternations in transcripts and metabolites and their associated functional pathways that are attributed to lumefantrine treatment. RH tachyzoites were used to infect Vero cells for three hours and subsequently treated with 900 ng/mL lumefantrine. Twenty-four hours post-drug treatment, we observed significant changes in transcripts associated with five DNA replication and repair pathways. Metabolomic data acquired through liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS) showed that lumefantrine mainly affected sugar and amino acid metabolism, especially galactose and arginine. To investigate whether lumefantrine damages T. gondii DNA, we conducted a terminal transferase assay (TUNEL). TUNEL results showed that lumefantrine significantly induced apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner. Taken together, lumefantrine effectively inhibited T. gondii growth by damaging DNA, interfering with DNA replication and repair, and altering energy and amino acid metabolisms.
