Abstract India accumulates 5.6 million tonnes of plastic waste every year, out of which 66% is the mixed waste polybags and pouches used for food packaging. Especially, the single‐use cups, made up of polystyrene, are not generally recycled as their process is expensive and tedious. On the other hand, biodegradable composite materials on biodegradation and composting act as fertilizers. The applicability of these biodegradable packaging materials is less in the industries as they lack mechanical barrier properties compared with plastic packaging materials. Ultrasonication is one such technology that can result in the successful enhancement of various properties. In ultrasonication, the amplitude was changed to 20%, 40%, and 60%, and time of ultrasonication was varied as 2, 4, 8, and 16 min. Mechanical properties such as tensile strength (31.38 N) and puncture strength (13.35 N) showed improvement. Other important properties such as density increased, whereas the water vapor transmission rate of biodegradable cup samples was decreased. NOVELTY IMPACT STATEMENT: The developed composite biodegradable cup with ultrasonication has good mechanical properties. The developed biodegradable cup can be used as a single‐use food server, thus reducing the use of plastic cups in the food industry.

Abstract Imbalanced fertilizer use with intensive cropping has threatened the sustainability of agroecosystems, especially on acid soils. An understanding of the long‐term effects of fertilizers and amendments on soil health is essential for sustaining high crop yields. The effects of application of fertilizers, and amendments for 46 years on soil properties and maize yield in an acid Alfisol were investigated in this study. Ten fertilizer treatments comprising different amounts of NPK fertilizers, farmyard manure (FYM) and lime, and one control, were replicated three times in a randomized block design. At 0–15 cm soil depth, bulk density was least (1.20 t/m³), porosity (49.8%) and water holding capacity (61.7%) were greatest in 100% NPK + FYM, corresponding to the largest organic carbon content (13.93 g/kg). Microbial biomass C and dehydrogenase activity in 100% NPK + FYM were 42% and 13.7% greater than 100% NPK, respectively. Available nutrients were significantly more with 100% NPK + FYM and 100% NPK + lime than control and other fertilizer treatments. At 15–30 cm depth, the effect of various treatments was comparable to the surface layer. Grain yield declined by 55% and 53% in 100% NPK(‐S) and 100% NP, respectively, compared with 100% NPK, whereas 100% N as urea alone eventually led to crop failure. Soil porosity recorded the greatest positive correlation (r = .933**), whereas bulk density recorded a negative significant correlation (r = −.942**) with grain yield. The results suggest that integrated use of FYM/lime with chemical fertilizers is a sustainable practice in terms of crop yield and soil health, whereas continuous application of urea alone is detrimental to the soil health.

Abstract An attempt was made to prepare a composite biodegradable cup using corn starch, whey protein, carboxymethyl cellulose and glycerol. For biodegradable cup formation, corn starch (5-7%), WPC-35 (1.5-3%), CMC (0.5-2%) and glycerol (2-4%) range was selected. To decide upon temperature at which the cup forming solution attains final viscosity, samples were tested under rapid visco analyser to conclude that layering was enabled at 50oC. Based on observations three best biodegradable cups combinations were selected Sample A (corn starch 7%, WPC-35 3%, Cellulose 2%, glycerol 2.5%); Sample B (corn starch 7%, WPC-35 2%, Cellulose 2%, glycerol 2.5%); Sample C (corn starch 7%, WPC-35 3%, Cellulose 2%, glycerol 4.0%). Properties like thickness, solubility, water vapour transmission rate, viscosity, moisture, lightness were studied for three samples to select the final cup. Based on observation, Sample C's final composition was selected as corn starch 7%, WPC-35 3%, cellulose 2%, glycerol 4.0%. The value for thickness, solubility, WVTR, moisture and lightness was observed as 0.5±0.025mm, 48.50±0.66%, 1.14±0.086g/m2/hr, 7.74±0.16%, 41.96±1.86 respectively. The lower diameter of the cup was observed as 5.5cm, upper diameter 7.5cm and height of cup was observed as 4.0 cm with the capacity of the final cup as 55.5ml/47.1gm.

Abstract Results for the effect of extraction pH and pH treatment on the functional, physicochemical, rheological and thermal characteristics of amaranth protein isolates (APIs) are reported in this study. Four amaranth protein isolates (P1, P2, P3 and P4) were prepared by varying the extraction pH (9-11). These four protein isolate samples were further treated at pH values from 3 to 9. The total protein content and purity of protein isolates were found to be higher for P1 than P2, P3 and P4 samples. The particle size of P1 was significantly (p ≤ 0.05) higher (299.68 µm) than other samples. Solubility, emulsifying capacity and stability, foaming properties, water and oil binding capacities were higher for the P1 sample treated at pH 9. Gelation characteristics like storage modulus (G') and loss modulus (G") were higher for P1 samples. APIs obtained at extraction pH 9 (P1) also exhibited better thermal properties in comparison with other three samples.
