    Abstract Community-based ecotourism (CBE) has been adopted for the preservation and restoration of the ecosystem in the four local communities in Binh Son district of Quang Ngai province in Vietnam. This study investigates the causal links that exist between socioeconomic development, the protection of biodiversity, environment and natural resources, and the institutional responses necessary for successful CBE development. In order to understand the complexities of the CBE model and how the stakeholders engaged in the CBE at local communities, a mix of the Strength-Weakness-Opportunity-Threat (SWOT) analysis and Driver-Pressure-State-Impact-Response (DPSIR) framework was employed for qualitative and quantitative data analysis using key informant interviews and household surveys. The study findings include important implications for both policy and management for promoting the sustainable growth of ecotourism in the region. Regarding theoretical contribution, various challenges to sustainably developing CBE have been identified while a DPSIR conceptual framework is proposed to assist future research in CBE in this area.

    Abstract Water contamination becomes one of the most high-priority environmental concerns, calling for the efficient treatment techniques. Bionanocomposites can be robust adsorbents, but the synthesis requires toxic chemicals or energy consuming and cause the secondary pollution. Green nanocomposites can be biogenically synthesized using the plant extract to end up with a critically safe strategy. Herein, we used the flower extract of Combretum indicum plant as a bio-based reductant and carbonaceous source for the green CuO@C nanocomposite.     Abstract Liposomes as drug-delivery systems have been researched and applied in multiple scientific reports and introduced as patented products with interesting therapeutic properties. Despite various advantages, this drug carrier faces major difficulties in its innate stability, cancer cell specificity, and control over the release of hydrophobic drugs, particularly quercetin, a naturally derived drug that carries many desirable characteristics for anticancer treatment. To improve the effectiveness of liposomes to deliver quercetin by tackling and mitigating the mentioned hurdles, we developed a strategy to establish the ability to passively target cancerous cells, as well as to increase the bioavailability of loaded drugs by incorporating poly(ethylene glycol), gelatin, and folic acid moieties to modify the liposomal system's surface. This research developed a chemically synthesized gelatin, poly(ethylene glycol), and folic acid as a single polymer to coat drug-loaded liposome systems. Liposomes were coated with gelatin-poly(ethylene glycol)-folic acid by electrostatic interaction, characterized by their size, morphology, ζ potential, drug loading efficiency, infrared structures, differential scanning calorimetry spectra, and drug-releasing profiles, and then evaluated for their cytotoxicity to MCF-7 breast cancer cells, as well as cellular uptake, analyzed by confocal imaging to further elaborate on the

    Abstract Hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles (HMSN) with unique properties are increasingly being applied in drug delivery field. To be able to encapsulate desired agents with different molecular size such as drugs, nucleic acids, polysaccharides and proteins … into the hollow cavity, the control of HMSN’s meso-chennal diameter is one of the pioneering and decisive factors. This study aims to use non-ionic surfactants (S) including Tween 20, Tween 80 and Brij S10 as co-templates with Cetrimonium bromide (CTAB) to control the mesopore diameter. HMSN was synthesized with hard template method following three main steps and S with different molar ratios would be prepare mixed micelles with CTAB and added into the synthesis mixture at the mesoporous coating step. Dynamic Light Scaterring (DLS) measurement was conducted for mixed micelles S-CTAB, meanwhile Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) Surface Area Analysis and Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) Pore Size and Volume Analysis were conducted for the synthesized HMSN with S-CTAB to evaluate the influence of S on HMSN’s mesopore diameter. Rose Bengal with molecular weight of 1017.64 g/mol was used as the model drug to evaluate drug loading capacity and release profile of the enlarged-mesopore system. Additionally, Zeta potential, SEM, TEM, XRD, FT-IR and cytotoxicity were conducted to characterize the synthesized particles. This study would contribute a meaningful approach to control the mesopore diameter of HMSN using non-ionic surfactants for drug delivery applications.

    Abstract The REDD+ program provides a mechanism for providing financial rewards to forest owners and users who contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions from deforestation and forest degradation. This paper determines the potential impact of the REDD+ program on poverty reduction by comparing income and poverty rate between two household groups that were willing to participate in this study, but that will not participate in the REDD+. The results showed that carbon payment from forests is a significant contributor to the increase in household income of poor people. The average income of households participating in the program is VND 20.68 million in contrast to those not participating whose average income is VND 14.72 million. Results showed that the REDD+ program intervention helped reduce the poverty rate in the two communes by 6.40% (from 39.4% to 33%). The paper recommends that the REDD+ program should facilitate the distribution of land titles to provide security of tenure for individual households that are participating in the program. While the program can contribute to poverty reduction, the program payments can increase income inequality and conflicts between those involved and those not involved in the program and legal ownership of the lands. In addition, a comprehensive research study on the impact of the program on forest conservation and poverty reduction is necessary. Stakeholders of the program should recognize and acknowledge the trade-offs between conservation and economic development or poverty reduction. A comprehensive trade-off analysis of program implementation and a business-as-usual option of commodity production is needed, which could reveal the indirect economic, political, and social costs and benefits of the program.

    Abstract Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+) is viewed as an effective way to mitigate climate change by compensating stewards of forested areas for minimizing forestland conversion and protecting forest services. Opportunity costs assess the cost of foregone opportunity when preserving the forest instead of investing in an alternative activity or resource use. This paper questions the calculation method of opportunity costs using averaged economic benefits and co-benefits of different land-use transitions. We propose a nested approach to land-use transitions at the interface between landscapes and livelihoods and assessing a wide range of potential socio-ecological costs and benefits. Combining household surveys and focus groups with participatory mapping, we applied the approach in villages of Laos, Vietnam and China positioned along a broad transition trajectory from subsistence shifting cultivation to intensive commercial agriculture. By looking beyond the economics of land use, we highlight important linkages between land-use changes and livelihood differentiation, vulnerability and inequalities. Our results show the importance of addressing the impacts of land-use transitions on a wide range of potential ecological and socioeconomic costs and benefits at multiple levels.

    Abstract The aim of this study was to develop a porcine epiphyseal plate-derived extracellular matrix powder (PEPEP) for epiphyseal plate regeneration. PEPEP was characterized by chemical assay to determine the contents of DNA and epiphyseal plate complex chemical components (glycosaminoglycan and hydroxyproline). The effects of PEPEP on the viability, proliferation, and differentiation of human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs) were also evaluated. hBMSCs cultured in PEPEP exhibited a good distribution with excellent viability after 72 h, demonstrating the ability of PEPEP to support hBMSC proliferation. At week 4 and 6 in vitro, the PEPEP + hBMSCs structure showed chondrogenic ability and an increase in expression of collagen type I, type II, and type X. PEPEP showed a promising ability to enhance cartilage formation and promote chondrocyte differentiation, maturation, and hypertrophy. The results provide insights into the feasibility of PEPEP as a potential material for tissue engineering applications.

    Abstract This paper examines how rice farmers at all gender and ages perceive climate change and adopt Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) technologies to enhance resilience and adaptation in three sub-regions of Vietnam. Impacts on livelihoods resilience, workloads of left behind family members, gender roles and responsibilities are also assessed. Using data from 579 randomly-sampled households, results show that women play a more important role in rice production in North and Central compared to the South due to higher rate of male out-migration. Differences in awareness and adoption of CSA technologies are observed although men and women across provinces have similar perception of climate change. The key challenges of youth engagement include drudgery in farm operations, labour-intensive technologies, low profit, inadequate access to land and credit, and lack of agricultural insurance scheme. Results imply that farmers should be provided with equal opportunities in trainings and field demonstrations on CSA technologies. Recommendations to attract the youth include: (i) promote on-farm training at school; (ii) organize exchange visits, trade fairs, competition on farming techniques; (iii) develop good production and business model; (iv) emphasize the important role of farmers and agriculture; (v) update agricultural policies and programmes; (vi) upgrade the skills and knowledge of extension workers.
