    Abstract The composition of volatile oils of the leaf and stem of Farfugium japonicum (L.) Kitamura were prepared by supercritical fluid extraction (SFE)-CO 2 . A total 47 and 40 compounds were identified by GC/MS analysis, respectively, and only 13 compounds coexisted. The main constituent types in the leaf oil included alcohols (34.1%), hydrocarbons (24.1%), terpenoids (16.2%), benzenes (7.5%), and fatty acids (4.9%). In the stem oil, the constituent types chiefly included benzenes (18.8%), ketones (13.9%), terpenoids (17.0%), fatty acids (8.8%), phenolics (8.7%), steroids (8.6%), hydrocarbons (8.0%), and esters (5.7%). The predominant volatile compounds in the stem were 2-(1-cyclopent-1-enyl-1-methylethyl) cyclopentanone (11.7%), 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-octahydro- 9,10-dimethyl-anthracene (8.4%), 5-heptylresorcinol (6.5%), and α -sitosterol (5.2%). Those in the leaf mainly included ( E )-3-hexen-1-ol (13.7%) and ( Z )-3-hexen-1-ol (14.0%). This demonstrated a significant difference in the composition of both oils. Further study showed that stem oils demonstrated the highest DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-pinylhydrazyl) and ·OH free radical scavenging capacities at IC 50 values of 9.22 and 0.90 mg/mL, respectively. In addition, they demonstrated the strongest antibacterial capacity against the Gram-positive bacteria methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) at a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 0.16 mg/mL. This could be due to the SFE-CO 2 extraction and the high accumulation of benzenes, terpenoids, and phenolics in the stem. In particular, the monoterpenes presented in terpenoids could play a special role in these findings.

    Abstract The rapid growth of on-demand ride service platforms has made it increasingly important for these platforms to efficiently match services by understanding driver characteristics and consumer preferences. This paper aims to investigate the pricing strategy by considering the impact of consumer preference heterogeneity and the different service types offered by drivers. The findings of this study reveal the need for the platform to strike a balance between service cost and the benefits of high-quality drivers, which can be referred to as the "cost-performance ratio". If the "cost-performance ratio" that attracts high-quality drivers is high, the platform will attract high-quality drivers or drivers of all types to participate while offering differentiated services. Otherwise, the platform will only provide services through low-quality drivers. Furthermore, the platform will also consider when to offer differentiated services based on network externalities and service quality. When the network externalities of the two types of services are similar, the platform will differentiate them based on service quality differences. Overall, considering consumer preference heterogeneity, drivers of service types, and network externalities, this paper provides guidance for platforms to make optimal decisions that enhance their service offerings and improve overall customer satisfaction.

    Abstract Illegitimate wildlife consumption poses threats to public health, biodiversity and natural ecosystems. Understanding of public attitudes towards wildlife as food can help promote wildlife conservation. However, almost wildlife consumption researches limit insights to subjective attitudes. To address this gap, the present employs a comprehensive approach, combining questionnaires, the Implicit Association Test (IAT) paradigm, and Event-Related Potential (ERP) method. This multi-method strategy enables better exploration of both explicit and implicit attitudes toward wildlife food. Participants who had been exposed to wildlife food consumption were randomly recruited. Compared to non-wildlife foods, people had a lower acceptability of wildlife foods, a longer reaction time when paired with positive words and a smaller N400 component when paired with negative words. These results revealed that public showed negative attitudes towards wildlife food compared to non-wildlife food, and this result was consistent between explicit and implicit attitudes. This outcome also provides a positive signal for wildlife conservation. Leveraging the public's negative perceptions of wildlife food in conjunction with the adverse consequences of eating wildlife food can be employed to further the cause of wildlife conservation.

    Abstract Background It is often the case that only a portion of the underlying network structure is observed in real-world settings. However, as most network analysis methods are built on a complete network structure, the natural questions to ask are: (a) how well these methods perform with incomplete network structure, (b) which structural observation and network analysis method to choose for a specific task, and (c) is it beneficial to complete the missing structure. Methods In this paper, we consider the incomplete network structure as one random sampling instance from a complete graph, and we choose graph neural networks (GNNs), which have achieved promising results on various graph learning tasks, as the representative of network analysis methods. To identify the robustness of GNNs under graph sampling scenarios, we systemically evaluated six state-of-the-art GNNs under four commonly used graph sampling methods. Results We show that GNNs can still be applied on single static networks under graph sampling scenarios, and simpler GNN models are able to outperform more sophisticated ones in a fairly experimental procedure. More importantly, we find that completing the sampled subgraph does improve the performance of downstream tasks in most cases; however, completion is not always effective and needs to be evaluated for a specific dataset.     Abstract Nonspecific membrane disruption is considered a plausible mechanism for the cytotoxicity induced by β-amyloid (Aβ) aggregates. In scenarios of high local Aβ concentrations, a two-step membrane fragmentation model has been proposed. Initially, membrane-embedded Aβ oligomeric aggregates form, followed by membrane fragmentation. However, the key molecular-level interactions between Aβ oligomeric aggregates and lipids that drive the second-stage membrane fragmentation remain unclear. This study monitors the time-dependent changes in lipid dynamics and water accessibility of model liposomes during Aβ-induced membrane fragmentation. Our results indicate that lipid dynamics on the nanosecond to microsecond time scale undergo rapid acceleration upon initial incubation with membrane-incorporated Aβ oligomeric aggregates, followed by a slow deceleration process. Concurrently, lipid headgroups become less accessible to water. Both observations suggest a carpet-like mechanism of membrane disruption for the Aβ-induced membrane fragmentation process.

    Abstract Selenium, a trace mineral with various biological functions, has become a focal point in prostate cancer research. This review aims to present a comprehensive overview of selenium’s involvement in prostate cancer, covering its impact on prevention, development, treatment, and underlying mechanisms. Observational studies have revealed a link between selenium levels and selenoproteins with prostate cancer progression. However, randomized controlled studies have shown that selenium supplementation does not prevent prostate cancer (HR: 0.95; 95% CI 0.80–1.13). This discrepancy might be attributed to selenoprotein single nucleotide polymorphisms. In the context of combinatorial therapy, selenium has demonstrated promising synergistic potential in the treatment of prostate cancer. Emerging evidence highlights the significant role of selenium and selenoproteins in prostate cancer, encompassing AR signaling, antioxidative properties, cell death, cell cycle regulation, angiogenesis, epigenetic regulation, immunoregulation, epithelial–mesenchymal transformation, and redox signal. In conclusion, selenium’s diverse properties make it a promising trace mineral in prostate cancer prevention, development, and treatment and as a platform for exploring novel agents.

    Abstract Collected network data are often incomplete, with both missing nodes and missing edges. Thus, network completion that infers the unobserved part of the network is essential for downstream tasks. Despite the emerging literature related to network recovery, the potential information has not been effectively exploited. In this paper, we propose a novel unified deep graph convolutional network that infers missing edges by leveraging node labels, features, and distances. Specifically, we first construct an estimated network topology for the unobserved part using node labels, then jointly refine the network topology and learn the edge likelihood with node labels, node features and distances. Extensive experiments using several real-world datasets show the superiority of our method compared with the state-of-the-art approaches.

    Abstract The resource quantity and elemental stoichiometry play pivotal roles in shaping belowground biodiversity. However, a significant knowledge gap remains regarding the influence of different plant communities established through monoculture plantations on soil fungi and bacteria's taxonomic and functional dynamics. This study aimed to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the regulation and adaptation of microbial communities at the taxonomic and functional levels in response to communities formed over 34 years through monoculture plantations of coniferous species (Japanese larch, Armand pine, and Chinese pine), deciduous forest species (Katsura), and natural shrubland species (Asian hazel and Liaotung oak) in the temperate climate. The taxonomic and functional classifications of fungi and bacteria were examined for the mineral topsoil (0-10 cm) using MiSeq-sequencing and annotation tools of microorganisms (FAPROTAX and Funguild).
