    Abstract Osteoarthritis is considered a degenerative joint disease that is characterised by inflammation, chronic pain, and functional limitation. The increasing development of nanotechnology in drug delivery systems has provided new ideas and methods for osteoarthritis therapy. This review aimed to evaluate patents that have developed innovations, therapeutic strategies, and alternatives using nanotechnology in osteoarthritis treatment. The results show patents deposited from 2015 to November 2021 in the online databases European Patent Office and World Intellectual Property Organisation. A total of 651 patents were identified for preliminary assessment and 16 were selected for full reading and discussion. The evaluated patents are focused on the intraarticular route, oral route, and topical route for osteoarthritis treatment. The intraarticular route presented a higher patent number, followed by the oral and topical routes, respectively. The development of new technologies allows us to envision a promising and positive future in osteoarthritis treatment.

    Abstract Synthetic sunscreen offers protection against excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun, and protects the skin from possible damage. However, they have low efficacy against the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are highly reactive molecules that can be generated in the skin when it is exposed to UV radiation, and are known to play a role in oxidative stress, which can contribute to skin aging and damage. Thus, there is an ongoing search for sunscreens that do not have these negative effects. One promising source for these is natural products. Therefore, the current patent review summarizes topical formulations made from natural compounds that have antioxidant properties and can be used as photoprotective or anti-aging agents, either using a single natural extract or a combination of extracts. The review reports basic patent information (applicant country, type of applicant, and year of filing) and gives details about the invention, including its chemical composition, and the in vitro and in vivo tests performed. These patents describe natural products that can be used to protect the skin and validate their efficacy, and safety, in addition to standardizing their formulations. The compositions described illustrate the consistent innovation in the use of natural products to protect against UV damage and photoaging disorders, a promising field which is receiving growing global recognition.

    Abstract Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) is an important vegetable crop cherished all over the world for consumption as a raw vegetable or as processed products. They are subjected to various drying processes to increase product stability and decrease postharvest loss. However, this can cause a loss in volatile compounds due to process conditions. Present study aims to gain an insight into the volatile profile of tomatoes when subjected to hot air, freeze, and spray drying processes. In this regard, the analysis of headspace - solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) in conjunction with gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy (GC–MS) revealed that the volatile profile, namely compounds belonging to aldehydes, alcohols, terpenes, ketones, and furans varied greatly between the fresh and dehydrated tomatoes. The aroma of dehydrated tomato products that retained volatiles followed the following order: freeze-drying >/≥spray drying > hot air drying. An increase in contents of compounds such as dimethyl sulfide, 2-ethyl furan, hydroxymethyl furfural, acetaldehyde, and α-terpineol was found in all dehydrated products. Interestingly, compounds such as 3-methyl furan, hexanol and terpinyl acetate were found to occur only in dehydrated products. The presence of γ-undecalactone (fruity odor note) is identified for the first time in our study in fresh and all dehydrated tomatoes. From the results obtained and with chemometric analysis as principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis on the volatile profile, it could be concluded that dehydrated tomatoes serve suitable products that could be extensively commercialized world-wide to achieve overall consumer acceptability.

    Abstract In the present study, carrots were subjected to hot air- and freeze-drying processes and their physical parameters and aromatic profile were compared. Water activity, shrinkage, hardness, springiness, cohesiveness, chewiness, rehydration ratio, and color measurements show that the convective drying of carrot slices lead to major changes in physical and aroma characteristics. The volatiles from air-drying of carrots contain terpenes, aldehydes, and alcohols which contribute to their aroma. The terpene, patchoulene imparting a spicy odor is reported for the first time in fresh carrots and it gets completely degraded during air dehydration. The key flavor components of fresh carrots were mostly retained during drying. The analytical results confirm that freeze-dried products had higher aroma retention.

    Abstract The aim of the present study was to evaluate the physical parameters, volatiles profile and sensory quality of the cabbage pieces subjected to hot air drying and freeze drying processes. Physical properties such as water activity, shrinkage, hardness, springiness, cohesiveness, chewiness, rehydration ratio and color measurements were measured using standard procedures while the volatile compounds were determined by the SPME-GC-MS method. The results showed that convective drying of cabbages lead to major adverse changes in physical and volatile compounds characteristics. Hot air and freeze drying of cabbages display different volatiles profile containing aldehydes, alcohols, terpenes, ketones and furans. Better retention of character impact cabbage green and pungent aroma compounds viz. allyl isothiocyanate, dimethyl sulfide, dimethyl disulfide, 1-octen-3-ol and (Z)-2-penten-1-ol was found in freeze dried cabbage. The presence of 3-(methylthio)-propyl isothiocyanate, methyl benzene isothiocyante and phenyl ethyl isothiocyanate is reported here for the first time in fresh cabbages. The flavor components of fresh cabbage were largely retained in the freeze dried product. Freeze drying also leads to positive sensory effects and better overall acceptability by consumers compared to the hot air dried product.
