Abstract Introduction: Self-gratification or masturbation is a normal sexual behaviour; however, masturbation in childhood is less commonly addressed in literature. Aim: To describe the clinical profile of the children diagnosed with self-gratification condition. Materials and Methods: This prospective cohort study recruited all cases diagnosed to have the self-gratification condition presenting to the outpatient clinic in the Department of Paediatric Medicine, Burdwan Medical College, Burdwan, West Bengal, India during the period- January 2014 to December 2019. Diagnosis was made from history, home videotapes and sometimes by direct observation of the act during hospital stay. All relevant data pertaining to demographic characteristics, clinical presentation, investigations and treatment were collected in case sheets and were analysed by simple descriptive statistics. Results: Fifty-four patients were diagnosed to have the condition. Among them, 29 (53.70%) were girls and 25 (46.30%) were boys. The mean age at first symptoms was 20.98±9.31 months (range 3 months to 3 years 4 months). The average age at diagnosis was 26.16±11.35 months (varied from 4 months to 3 years 11 months). The mean frequency of events was 10.31±5.10 times per week, and the mean duration was 9.83±5.98 minutes. Events occurred mostly when children were left alone and bored (n=34, 62.97%). Usual presentations were: rocking in prone position (n=24, 44.44%), intermittent dystonic posturing of the crossed legs (n=23, 42.59%), direct genital manipulation (n=3, 5.56%) and others (n=4, 7.40%)). Two children had been previously misdiagnosed as having definite epilepsy. In 51 cases (94.44%) home videos were available which served as invaluable tools allowing confident diagnosis. Results of urine and stool examination were normal. MRI and EEG performed on two children with suspected epilepsy were reported normal, and antiepileptic drugs were stopped in both. Sixteen children (29.63%) were sent for behavioural therapy and all of them responded well in next one ...

Abstract Childhood masturbation/self-gratification behaviour means self-stimulation of the genitals by an immature child. Literature on this topic is scarce and scattered. Though most of the paediatricians seem to know about this entity, precise knowledge on spectrum of different behavioural patterns these children may show is lacking. Masturbatory activity in infants and young children is difficult to recognise because it often does not involve manual stimulation of the genitalia at all. We hereby report a series of 3 cases of childhood masturbation where direct genital manipulation, a very rare manifestation, was evident during gratification spells.

Abstract Alternaria leaf spot of chilli caused by Alternaria alternate is an important disease affecting chilly production areas in India. The disease is primarily controlled through the use of fungicidal seed treatments. In this study, different fungicides viz. Captol, Captan, Ziram, Captofol, Thiram, Indofill Z 78 and Indofill Z 45 were assessed for their ability to reduce the growth of Alternaria alternata under laboratory conditions. Maximum inhibition (100%) was achieved by Captol and capton followed by captofol (89.5 %) while 0.1 % dose given. This paper reports the efficacy of fungicides that can be used under field conditions to control alternaria leaf spot in tropical regions and demonstrates the use of a method of application that could significantly improve the efficacy of disease control.

Abstract Allium humile is a medicinal plant found at the Alpine Himalayas of Uttarakhand at altitute of 2500-3000 meters height of sea level. In India, Allium humile, is used by local people as a spice and in ethano-medicine. In the present study, Allium humile leaves were explored for their analgesic potential on experimental model and compared to standard drugs. Allium humile at the doses of 100 mg/kg and aspirin 25 mg/kg exhibited significant (p>0.05) inhibition of the control writhes at the rate of 64.25%, 44.54%, 44.54% and 59.89% respectively when compared to that of control. Thus, methanolic extract of the plant can be fully explored for its analgesic potential which has not been reported so far. The plant extract showed a relative low toxicity hence justifies the folkloric use of plant by the local people in Western Himalayan region for curing inflammation and painful conditions.

Abstract Different strains of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum were isolated from the diseased samples collected from different hosts and locations. Among the 14 isolates, 12 isolates colonies covered the entire Petri plates within 96 hours but, two isolates from fababean and yellow mustard showed slow colony growth within 96 hours. All isolates produced sclerotia which were varied in number, but the fenugreek isolate produced maximum (43) number of sclerotia and lambs quarter isolate produced minimum number of sclerotia (12) on PDA medium. To examine inhibitory effect of fungicide on the mycelial growth of the pathogen, 9 fungicides were tested in vitro against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, of those carbendazim, carboxin, topsin-M and carbendazim+ mancozeb (SAAF) were found most effective and inhibited the mycelial growth of pathogen up to 100 per cent at 0.05%, 0.1%, and 0.2% concentration. The effect of different bioagents viz., Trichoderma harzianum, T. viride, T. koningii, T. atroviride, T. longibraciatum, Aspergillus niger, Chaetomium globosome and Penicillium notatum in inhibiting the growth of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum was studied through “Dual Culture Technique”. The data showed that among the eight biocontrol agent six were fond effective. The maximum inhibition was found by T. harzianum causing 70.82% inhibition of mycelial growth of the pathogen S. sclerotiorum.
