Abstract Alan Rogers looks at learning (formal, nonformal and informal) and examines the hidden world of informal (unconscious, unplanned) learning. He points out the importance of informal learning for creating tacit attitudes and values, knowledge and skills which influence (conscious, planned) learning - formal and non-formal. Moreover, he explores the implications of informal learning for educational planners and teachers in the context of lifelong learning. While mainly aimed at adult educators, the book's arguments apply also to schooling and higher education, in both industrialised societies and developing countries where large numbers of children and adults are not and have not been in school and so rely on informal learning to manage change

Abstract There is a growing concern around the health and wellbeing of community nurses due to the high complexities of and demand on district nursing services. It is well recognised that district nursing services have no limits to their capacity, and they have been dealing with an increasing caseload, with no increases in resources or staff. Consequently, this has left community nurses feeling exhausted and experiencing burnout, which, in the long term, can lead to compassion fatigue, which can in turn compromise patient safety. Specialist practitioner qualified district nurses (SPQDN) require the skills and knowledge to promote health and wellbeing, in order to provide a positive work environment and limit work-related stress and burnout despite the challenges encountered. This article explores possible strategies to promote health and wellbeing among community nurses and the barriers that SPQDNs encounter in doing so.

Abstract Purpose: The aim was to compare the accuracy of freehand fluoroscopy and CT based navigation on thoracolumbar screws placement and their respective effects on radiological exposure to the patient. No previous study directly compared the Airo® navigation system to freehand technique.
Methods: In this monocentric retrospective study, 156 consecutive patients who underwent thoracolumbar spine surgery were included. Epidemiological data and surgical indications were noted. Heary classification was used for thoracic screws and Gertzbein-Robbins classification for lumbar screws. Radiological exposure was collected for each surgery.
Results: A total of 918 screws were implanted. We analyzed 725 lumbar screws (Airo® 287; freehand fluoroscopy 438) and 193 thoracic screws (Airo® 49; freehand fluoroscopy 144). Overall, lumbar screws accuracy (Gertzbein-Robbins grade A and B) was good in both groups (freehand fluoroscopy 91.3%; Airo® 97.6%; P<0.05). We found significantly less Grade B and C in the Airo® group. Thoracic accuracy was also good in both groups (Heary 1 and 2; freehand fluoroscopy 77.8%; Airo® 93.9%), without reaching statistical significance. Radiological exposure was significantly higher in the Airo® group with a mean effective dose of 9.69 mSv versus 0.71mSv for freehand fluoroscopy.
Conclusion: Our study confirmed that the use of Airo® navigation yielded good accuracy. It however exposed the patient to higher radiological exposure compared with freehand fluoroscopy technique.
    Level of evidence: Level 3.

Abstract Objective: The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has greatly disrupted head and neck cancer services in the West of Scotland. This study aimed to assess the impact of the first wave of the pandemic on cancer waiting times.
Methods: A retrospective review of multidisciplinary team records was undertaken between March and May in 2019 and the same months in 2020. Time-to-diagnosis and time-to-treatment for new cancers treated with curative intent were compared between the study periods, and subclassified by referral pathway.
Results: A total of 236 new cancer patients were included. During the pandemic, pathways benefitted from reduced diagnostic and treatment times resulting from the restructuring of service provisions. A 75 per cent reduction in secondary care referrals and a 33 per cent increase in urgent suspicion of cancer referrals were observed in 2020.
Conclusion: Head and neck cancer pathway times did not suffer because of the coronavirus pandemic. Innovations introduced to mitigate issues brought about by coronavirus benefitted patients, led to a more streamlined service, and improved diagnostic and treatment target compliance.

Abstract Drawing on findings of an original 12-month ethnographic study, this article presents the challenges that Bolivian women face in accessing a new law that has been designed to protect them, Law 348 to "Guarantee Women a Life Free from Violence." Data reveal that while the law creates opportunities for the (re)conceptualization of violence, mobilizing the law is fraught with difficulties and a culture of impunity prevails. The challenges of implementation are both nationally and internationally significant as other countries seek to enact similar legal strategies. In Bolivia, this article suggests, civil society organizations and women's voices are central to the full realization of the law.

Abstract Sexual passion is an important element of adult romantic relationships, but little is known about how it is developed or expressed during adolescence. From a Self Determination Theory perspective, this study explored the connections between parents' sexual passion and children's sexual passion, and whether these links were mediated by parents' communication about sexuality with their children. Using a diverse sample of 484 mother-adolescent dyads (M

Abstract Introduction: Reversing the upward trajectory of obesity requires responding by including the multiple influences on weight control. Research has focused on individual behaviours, overlooking the environments where individuals spend their lives and shape lifestyles. Thus, there is a need for lay understandings of the impact of environments as a cause and solution to obesity. This research aimed to understand the influence of environments on the adoption of health practices in adults with obesity and to identify lay strategies with which to address environmental barriers to behaviour change.
Methods: Nineteen adults with a history of obesity living in the United Kingdom were interviewed through video conferencing between May 2020 and March 2021. Semi-structured interviews and socio-demographic questionnaires were used, and data analysed through hermeneutic phenomenology informed reflexive thematic analysis.
Results: Three main themes were created: living with convenience and normalcy: the increased accessibility of unhealthy food, people interacting with digital media for positive practice change, and the need to prioritise prevention in schools, the National Health Service and the food industry.
Conclusions: The food environment was the major barrier, while interactions with social media was the most important opportunity to adopt healthy practices. The National Health Service was considered an obesogenic environment, something relevant since it has been traditionally recognised as an obesity management system. The perceptions from individuals with a history of obesity provide new suggestions on the influence of previously overlooked environments to design more adequate and effective interventions and policies that consider, more than in the past, the environments where people spend their lives.
