Abstract Multi- and few-mode fibers (FMFs) promise to enhance the capacity of optical communication networks by orders of magnitude. The key for this evolution was the strong advancement of computational approaches that allowed inherent complex light transmission to be surpassed, learned, or controlled, reined in by modal crosstalk and mode-dependent losses. However, complex light transmission through FMFs can be learned by a single hidden layer neural network (NN). The emerging developments in NNs additionally allow the implementation of novel concepts for security enhancements in optical communication. Once the transmission characteristics of FMFs are learned, it is possible to survey the incoming and outgoing light fields via monitoring channels during data transmission. If an eavesdropper tries to gain unauthorized access to the FMF, its transmission properties are impaired through sensitive modal crosstalk. This process is registered by the NN and thus the eavesdropper is revealed. With our solution, the security of optical communication can be improved.

Abstract In recent years, there has been significant progress in developing pre-trained language models for NLP. However, these models often struggle when fine-tuned on small datasets. To address this issue, researchers have proposed various adaptation approaches. Prompt-based tuning is arguably the most common way, especially for larger models. Previous research shows that adding contrastive learning to prompt-based fine-tuning is effective as it helps the model generate embeddings that are more distinguishable between classes, and it can also be more sample-efficient as the model learns from positive and negative examples simultaneously. One of the most important components of contrastive learning is data augmentation, but unlike computer vision, effective data augmentation for NLP is still challenging. This paper proposes LM-CPPF, Contrastive Paraphrasing-guided Prompt-based Fine-tuning of Language Models, which leverages prompt-based few-shot paraphrasing using generative language models, especially large language models such as GPT-3 and OPT-175B, for data augmentation. Our experiments on multiple text classification benchmarks show that this augmentation method outperforms other methods, such as easy data augmentation, back translation, and multiple templates.

Abstract Drowsiness while driving negatively impacts road safety, especially in truck drivers. The present study investigated the feasibility and alerting effects of a daylight-supplementing in-truck lighting system (DS) providing short-wavelength enriched light before, during, and after driving. In a within-participants design, eight truck drivers drove a fully-loaded truck under wintry Scandinavian conditions (low daylight levels) with a DS or placebo system for five days. Subjective and objective measures of alertness were recorded several times daily, and evening melatonin levels were recorded three times per study condition. DS significantly increased daytime light exposure without causing negative side effects while driving. In addition, no negative carry-over effects were observed on evening melatonin and sleepiness levels or on nighttime sleep quality. Moreover, objective alertness (i.e., psychomotor vigilance) before and after driving was significantly improved by bright light exposure. This effect was accompanied by improved subjective alertness in the morning. This field study demonstrated that DS was able to increase daytime light exposure in low-daylight conditions and to improve alertness in truck drivers before and after driving (e.g., during driving rest periods). Further studies are warranted to investigate the effects of daylight-supplementing in-cabin lighting on driving performance and road safety measures.

Abstract Design tools in the 3D industry, while powerful, are still tedious and labor-intensive when it comes to bringing a creative idea for a visual effect to life. In this position paper, we discussed how an infamous generative synthetic media, deepfakes, could be of use and embedded into common sophisticated 3D workflows to reduce user workloads in areas such as 3D model editing, material design, and character animation. As a case discussion, we also prototyped a tool to address the retargeting problem in character animation. Although deepfakes themselves have received a negative public image, the results of our interviews with field experts are unexpectedly positive in regard to our tool that utilizes deepfake algorithms. Lastly, we also discussed our experience and observed design practices to put deepfakes to good use, including how we could avoid potential misuses directly by design, how this design changes user interactions, and subsequent open issues.
