Abstract Many studies have been made in recent years to improve the quality and increase the quantity of agricultural yield. Mechanization and novel hybrid seeds are not the only factors contributing to agricultural advancement and progress; soil quality also plays an important role. It is common for soils that lack organic matter to be unfit for plant growth. Humic compounds have begun to be added to soil in different regions of the world to address this issue and boost agricultural yields. Nowadays, humic acid (HA) is available in different forms (powder, granule, liquid & flakes) in the market and can be applied to crops or soil by various techniques, i.e. soil application, foliar application, seed treatment, root dipping, through drip irrigation and along with inorganic fertilizers but soil application is found most effective in numerous studies. To know the optimum dose of the humic acid, various studies were conducted on crops and discovered a positive response in yield attributed to character, yield, and soil properties. This review enlightens the relevance of humic acid on different crops and soil health, and boosts agricultural productivity.

Abstract The study was carried out to know the mechanism of less or no flowering in well maintained high-density planted (CHDP) guava (Psidium guajava L.) orchard (2 m × 2 m) during 2014 and 2015. Biochemical parameters determine flowering and fruiting in high-density planted guava orchard of 15 years old. Maximum length (17.48 cm), diameter (3.68 mm) of shoot and number of leaves pair (5.49) per shoot were found in flowering plants; highest leaf area (32.20 cm2) was observed in non-flowering plants. With respect to biochemical parameters, total chlorophyll (5.05 mg/g), chlorophyll a (3.02 mg/g), chlorophyll a (2.03 mg/g), total sugars (15949.57 μg/g dry wt.), starch in leaves (2361.50 μg/g dry wt.) and roots (2024.45 μg/g dry wt.) were highest in matured leaves of flowering plants. Whereas, mature leaves of flowering plants of guava showed lowest Chlorophyll a: b ratio (1.58 mg/g). Anthocyanin content was highest (0.052 mg/g) in the immature leaves of flowering plants. Similarly, Chlorophyll b content in leaf was found less (0.72 mg/g) in the non-flowering plant compared to a flowering plant. Allahabad Safeda and L-49 cultivars are better among the four cultivars in such phenomenon of in bearing level of old guava orchard. Relevant information got in the study of Chlorophyll b, which indirectly plays important role in flowering and fruiting. Chlorophyll b increases the range of light, which is used by the plant for producing energy.

Abstract In this research work, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-graphene (Gr) nano composite films were fabricated by incorporating the functionalized graphene (f-Gr) for different periods of refluxing and vacuum oven time. The graphene particles were functionalized through nitric acid (HNO3). Various tests were conducted to estimate the properties and characteristics of this composite. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results confirm the bonds of carboxyl, hydroxyl and carbonyl groups, manifested of functionalization of graphene. Scanning electron microscopy was performed to investigate morphology and transparency of f-Gr nano-particles in nano-composite films. Water absorption test was carried out to evaluate water absorption (%) in the PVA based composite films. The result revealed that water absorption rate of the composite decreased with increasing refluxing time at constant vacuum oven time of f-Gr reinforced composite. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) showed that the value of storage modulus was higher for PVA-f-Gr nano-composite films compared to neat PVA and PVA-Gr composite over the entire range of temperature, which lead to explore this composite material for the vibration isolation applications. Glass transition state (Tg), loss modulus and the damping factor (tan δ) of the PVA-f-Gr nano composites films were highly affected by the addition f-Gr nano crystals in the PVA matrix. The value of tan δ for f-Gr nano composite is obtained both higher as well as lower compared to PVA-Gr film for the varying vacuum oven time and refluxing time. Electrical analysis indicates an enhancement in conductivity of PVA with introduction of f-Gr nano particles. After evaluating the high damping characteristics of this composite, the authors perceive that it may be utilized to reduce noise transmission and as a shock absorber vibration isolator.

Abstract Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is an emerging public health concern in India, which has detrimental effects on both the mother and the baby. The data on prevalence of GDM was unavailable at secondary urban health facilities, from where a majority of pregnant women seek antenatal services, and the following study identifies this burden. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from May 2019 to June 2020 among pregnant women attending the antenatal outpatient department (OPD) at secondary level health facilities in urban Lucknow. A semi-structured interview schedule was administered to the study subjects for collecting the relevant information and 75 g of oral glucose tolerance test was performed irrespective of the meal. The cut-off points taken for the diagnosis of GDM and gestational glucose intolerance (GGI) was as per the guidelines of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for diagnosis of GGI/GDM. Results: The overall prevalence of GDM and GGI in the study was 11.6% and 16.8%, respectively. Three-fourth of the women (22/29) were diagnosed with GDM in the second trimester of pregnancy. The prevalence of GDM (16.7%) was significantly higher in pregnant women aged more than 25 years and in those who were overweight. Mean birth weight (3.2 ± 8.1 kg) of the babies was significantly higher in the women with GDM. Among the fetal complications was respiratory distress observed among 28 pregnant women and 31% of them had GDM and this was statistically significant. Conclusion: The prevalence of GGI and GDM was found 16.8% and 11.6%, respectively. Gestational age, pre-pregnancy weight, pre-pregnancy BMI, weight gain during the pregnancy, family history of diabetes. PCOS, macrosomia and GDM in prior pregnancies was found to significant with GDM in the study.

Abstract A field experiment was conducted on Typic Ustochrept soil at the Crop Research Centre of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel University of Agriculture and Technology, Meerut, for two years (2014–15 to 2015–16) to evaluate site specific nutrient management (SSNM) against state recommendation (SR), integration of SSNM and SR with crop residue and farm yard manure. In terms of crop growth yield, nutrient uptake and economics, SSNM had significantly higher growth parameters, viz. number of tillers/m2 and dry matter accumulation as compared to SR in both rice and wheat crops. Different yield attributes, viz. number of grains/panicle or spike, test weight of rice and wheat were also higher with SSNM. SSNM out yielded for rice, wheat and rice-wheat system (RWS) productivity by 10.3%, 14.1% and 11.9%. System N, P and K uptake under SSNM was also higher by 24.36, 9.55 and 36.01 kg/ha, respectively, compared to SR. An additional income of `12953/ha over SR and maximum return/rupee invested (`2.50) was also recorded with SSNM. Recycling of 5 t/ha rice and wheat straw residue along with SSNM had added advantage.

Abstract A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of irrigation scheduling and use of superabsorbent polymers on growth, seed and water productivity, soil moisture dynamics in Indian mustard under semi-arid conditions. During the first year of the study, the increase in the mustard seed yield with irrigations applied at IW/CPE (Irrigation water, mm/Cumulative Pan Evaporation, mm (CPU) ratios 0.8, 0.6, 0.4 and no-irrigation (rainfed) with hydrogel application (+HG) was 18.6, 17.9, 14.4 and 28.3%, respectively, over no hydrogel (-HG). The seed yield enhancement by hydrogel application during the second year varied from 3% under sufficient irrigation to 24.9% under rainfed conditions. The pooled data indicated that the production indices and economics with hydrogel use improved significantly (P ≤ 0.05) under limited irrigation or rainfed condition. A net increase of 38, 27.7, and 10.7%, in production efficiency (PE), the net return, and profitability of mustard respectively was observed due to the use of hydrogel improved under the rainfed condition. Under limited irrigation (single irrigation at IW/CPE 0.4), a net increase of 24.2 and 31.8%, in the marginal and gross water productivity of mustard respectively, was recorded with hydrogel use. Similarly, in rainfed conditions, hydrogel increased gross water productivity by 22.6%. The energy intensity under irrigations scheduled at IW/CPE 0.8, 0.6, 0.4, and rainfed condition, was enhanced by 4.9, 5.9, 6.7, and 10.5%, respectively, due to hydrogel application. Thus, the use of hydrogel both under the rainfed condition and deficit irrigation has the potential to enhance productivity, profitability, and bio-energy output of Indian mustard in semi-arid agro-ecologies.

Abstract Introduction: Home-based newborn care (HBNC) is a strategy adopted by government of India to overcome the burden of newborn deaths in the first week of life, it provides continuum of care for newborn and post-natal mothers. HBNC introduced since 2011 is centred around Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) and it is the main community-based approach to newborn health. Aims and Objectives: The objective of the present study was to assess the HBNC during HBNC visit in rural area of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh (U.P.). Materials and Methods: The present cross-sectional study was carried out in the field practice area of Primary Health Centre Sarojini Nagar, Lucknow UP. A total of 200 mothers of newborn (age 03 days to 60 days) born in the catchment area of PHC Sarojini Nagar during 8 months period were included in cross-sectional study. Results: The result of study showed that majority of newborns got all the age appropriate home visit. None of the mothers had knowledge and awareness about the HBNC provision for home visits and the number of home visit by ASHA decreases as age of baby increases. All the ASHAs were aware about the schedule of home visit, the number of home visit in case of home delivery and institutional delivery. Conclusion and Recommendation: ASHA was found to be the major facilitator for HBNC programme. Knowledge and awareness of ASHA on importance of postnatal care needs to be enhanced via hands on training.

Abstract Background: Few studies have compared the safety and efficacy of azilsartan medoxomil (AZL-M) and telmisartan in hypertensive patients, especially using ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM). Objective: The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety profile of AZL-M and telmisartan in hypertensive patients using ABPM and clinic blood pressure (BP) monitoring. Materials and Methods: This prospective, randomized, open-label, blinded endpoint, parallel-arm study included 700 patients, aged 18–70 years, with clinic and 24-h mean ambulatory systolic BP (SBP) of 150–180 mmHg and 130–170 mmHg, respectively. They were randomized equally into two groups: Group A received AZL-M 40 mg and Group T received telmisartan 40 mg; the dose was force titrated to 80 mg after 2 weeks if the response rate was not achieved. BP (clinical and ambulatory) was measured after 12 weeks and compared with baseline measurements. Results: AZL-M significantly reduced the 24-h mean ambulatory SBP (Group A: 112.74 ± 7.58 mmHg; Group T: 113.96 ± 8.52 mmHg;P < 0.0001) and diastolic BP (Group A: 71.39 ± 5.89 mmHg; Group T: 67.29 ± 6.79 mmHg;P < 0.0001) compared with telmisartan at week 12. The clinic SBP significantly decreased in Group A at weeks 4 (−30.69± −0.33 mmHg) and 12 (−39.69± −1.09 mmHg) (for both, P = 0.0001). Dose titration was done in 99 and 128 patients from Group A and Group T, respectively (P = 0.012). Headache was the most common adverse drug reaction (Group A: 21; Group T: 27) and fatigue the least. Conclusion: This study found that AZL-M has greater antihypertensive efficacy than telmisartan, with comparable side effects. In addition, ABPM was shown to be a feasible method for such studies.

Abstract A field experiment was conducted during rabi 2017-18 and 2018-19 to investigate the effects of different methods of zinc fertilization on growth parameters, yield attributes and yield of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The experiment was laid-out in a randomized complete block design with 12 treatments and 3 replications. Seed priming as well as soil application was effective in improving emergence count of wheat over control. Soil application of zinc sulphate heptahydrate @ 25 kg/ha could improve growth parameters, yield attributes and yield of wheat while nutripriming and foliar application failed to do so. The study suggested that soil application method alone or in combination with other application methods like nutripriming or foliar application can provide yield advantage of 10-15% over no zinc application. Considering the fact that combination of other application methods with soil application could not improve yield over soil application alone significantly, hence; soil application of 25 kg ZnSO4.7H2O alone can be recommended for achieving higher grain yield under irrigated mollisol.
