Abstract Study design: A retrospective cohort study.
Objective: To compare the safety and clinical efficacy between using cement-augmented pedicle screws (CAPS) and conventional pedicle screws (CPS) for the treatment of lumbar degenerative patients with osteoporosis. Management of lumbar degenerative patients with osteoporosis undergoing spine surgery is challenging. The clinical efficacy and potential complications of the mid-term performance of the CAPS technique in the treatment of lumbar degenerative patients with osteoporosis remain to be evaluated.
Patients and methods: The data of 131 lumbar degenerative patients with osteoporosis who were treated with screw fixation from May 2016 to December 2019 were retrospectively analyzed in this study. The patients were divided into the following two groups according to the type of screw used: (I) the CAPS group (n = 85); and (II) the CPS group (n = 46). Relevant data were compared between two groups, including the demographics data, clinical results and complications.
Results: The difference in the VAS, ODI and JOA scores at three and 6 months after the operation between the two groups was statistically significant (P < 0.05). At 12 months after surgery and the final follow-up, a significant difference in the fusion rate was found between the two groups (P < 0.05). Four cemented screws loosening were observed in the CAPS group (loosening rate 4/384, 1.04%) and 15 screws loosening were observed in the CPS group (loosening rate 15/214, 7.01%). In the CAPS group, a total of 384 augmented screws were used, and cement leakage was observed in 25 screws (25/384, 6.51%), but no obvious clinical symptoms or serious complications were observed. Adjacent vertebral fractures occurred in six patients in the CAPS group and one in the CPS group.
Conclusions: CAPS technique is an effective strategy for the treatment of lumbar degenerative patients with osteoporosis, with a higher fusion rate and lower screw loosening rate than CPS.

Abstract Osteoporosis is one of the most disabling consequences of aging, and osteoporotic fractures and a higher risk of subsequent fractures lead to substantial disability and deaths, indicating that both local fracture healing and early anti-osteoporosis therapy are of great significance. However, combining simple clinically approved materials to achieve good injection and subsequent molding and provide good mechanical support remains a challenge. To meet this challenge, bioinspired by natural bone components, we develop appropriate interactions between inorganic biological scaffolds and organic osteogenic molecules, achieving a tough hydrogel that is both firmly loaded with calcium phosphate cement (CPC) and injectable. Here, the inorganic component CPC composed of biomimetic bone composition and the organic precursor, incorporating gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) and N-Hydroxyethyl acrylamide (HEAA), endow the system with fast polymerization and crosslinking through ultraviolet (UV) photo-initiation. The GelMA-poly (N-Hydroxyethyl acrylamide) (GelMA-PHEAA) chemical and physical network formed in situ enhances the mechanical performances and maintains the bioactive characteristics of CPC. This tough biomimetic hydrogel combined with bioactive CPC is a new promising candidate for a commercial clinical material to help patients to survive osteoporotic fracture.

Abstract A total of 16 O3-type high-Ni ternary crystal structures with mirror symmetry were constructed based on the relative locations of Ni, Co, and Mn in order to design high operating voltage and high-capacity cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Transition states, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, intercalation potentials, and (spin) electronic structures are computed and simulated based on first-principles calculations. The results show that the Li ion diffusion energy barrier, in the structure of the lowest energy counterpart a'aa', is only 0.9 eV. When charged to 75% state of charge (SOC), the Li layer spacing reaches a maximum under electrostatic attraction and Coulomb repulsion forces. The operating voltage and theoretical capacity are up to 4.79 V and 275 mA h g

Abstract A combined cold and power system with an integrated advanced adiabatic compressed air energy storage system and double-effect compression-absorption refrigeration using [mmim]DMP/CH₃OH as working fluid (CACAR) was proposed. The CACAR system can use the heat generated by the compression process and the cooling capacity generated by the expansion of compressed air. The dynamic mathematical model of the CACAR system was built based on the mass conservation, energy conservation, and entropy equation of each component. The verification of the compressor, expander, air tank, and Compression absorption refrigeration (CAR) were partly implemented to validate the proposed model. The energy balance of the proposed system was confirmed. The exergy losses of each component were calculated and analyzed. The proposed model have been verified to obey the first and second laws of thermodynamics. The transient characteristics of the expansion process were simulated and discussed. Based on the sensitivity analysis results, the four key operating parameters were optimized using the multi-objective and multiparameter methods. The optimum parameter combination of γ and T₃₇ of the refrigeration system is found to be (1.503, 342.21 Κ). The energy efficiency of the CACAR system was at least 14.97% higher than that of the AA-CAES system.

Abstract To meet the growing demand for energy storage devices, anode material with good electrochemical performance is urgently needed. In view of the lighter anode material contributing to high specific capacity, this study examines the feasibility of Mg₂N monolayer as an anode material for alkali metal ion batteries based on the first principle calculations. A comprehensive study was carried out which includes the stability, electronic properties and electrochemical performance for Li/Na/K-ion batteries (LIBs/NIBs/KIBs). The results of phonopy spectrum and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) calculations demonstrated that monolayer Mg₂N possesses high dynamic and thermal stability. The electronic band structure and density of states indicated the superior conductivity of Mg₂N, ideal for the use of electrode material. The calculation of electrochemical performance revealed that Mg₂N exhibits ultra-high theoretical specific capacities of 2140 mAh g⁻¹ and 863 mAh g⁻¹ as an anode material for LIBs and NIBs that far surpass the specific capacities of graphite. The low diffusion barrier (both below 0.01eV for LIBs/NIBs) ensures fast ion transport during the charging/discharging process. The aforementioned results suggested that Mg₂N shows the potential as a promising anode material for LIBs and NIBs. This work may guide the design of anode material for alkali metal ion batteries.

Abstract Nutrients recovery from wastewater using struvite crystallization has received significant attention because the recovered nutrients can be used as a fertilizer in agriculture. However, the wastewater with different composition of nutrients might exert distinct struvite characteristics. The objective of this study is to explore the influence of nitrogen/phosphorus (N/P) molar ratio and initial nutrient concentrations on the phosphorus (P) recovery from wastewater and the crystallographic properties of struvite through batch experiments. Both the higher nutrients concentrations and N/P molar ratio in the wastewater resulted in higher recovery of P. However, initial nutrients concentration in the wastewater posed a larger effect on the formation of struvite than that of initial N/P ratio. The ratio of N to P consumed during the process varied with varying the N/P ratio or the initial nutrients concentration, indicating the existence of different crystallization mechanisms under different elemental compositions in the wastewater. The decline in solution pH was negatively correlated with the N/P ratio, whereas it was positively correlated with the nutrient concentration. The crystals produced were mainly rough (dendritic) under the N/P ratio of 2, while the morphology evolved from a regular coffin-like to irregular columnar with the increase in N/P ratio from 4 to 10. Meanwhile, the shape of the irregular cylinder gradually changed from elongated needle shape to the thick rods appearance with the increase in the nutrients concentration. Higher N/P ratio increased the nucleation rate, resulting in finer particles and an uneven crystal size distribution, but purer struvite crystals. The purity of struvite was also positively correlated with the initial nutrients concentration. The Visual MINTEQ modelling analysis demonstrated that the supersaturation ratio of struvite gradually increased with the increase in the N/P ratio or nutrients concentration, which led to a positive effect on struvite crystallization.

Abstract Phosphorus, as a non-renewable element, is flowing out too fast in the past decades. To sustain the development of this globally scarce resource, efficient measures were taken to recover more phosphorus in the struvite form from wastewater. However, heavy metals in the wastewater might produce an inhibitory effect on phosphorus recovery, and even worse, pollutants might be incorporated in/onto the crystals precipitated. Impurities on struvite will reduce the quality of struvite as a potential slow-release fertilizer and affect the safe application of struvite in agriculture. This review aims to identify the trends in the literature to present the residues of heavy metals in struvite. It summarizes the current status in the residues of main metal elements on crystals and its response to wastewater properties, composition, and oxidation state of metals. The adsorption process and potential adsorption mechanism of heavy metals during the struvite crystallization are deeply explored, which might determine the latter release rate of metals when applying into the soil. Possible solutions are further provided to minimize the amounts of heavy metals mainly through adjusting operational conditions or employing pretreatment methods. Finally, this review critically analyzes the limitation gap between theory and actual generalization and potential application of struvite products in the market, and corresponding perspectives in the future are given to safely utilize the phosphorus resource from wastewater in the form of struvite.
