    Abstract The observed discharge, an important input for flood forecasting systems, can significantly affect the accuracy of forecasting results. Since the reservoir inflow is not measured directly but calculated based on the observed reservoir stage and the reservoir outflow, it always contains gross errors causing some inflow to be outliers. In this study, a robust error estimation method for real-time flood forecasting has been developed for reservoirs’ data processing. The method differs from the conventional flood forecasting method, in that it represses the gross errors by a robust loss function based on the real error distribution of measurements. Furthermore, a fluctuation coefficient has been proposed to quantify the degree of fluctuation of a jagged reservoir inflow. The performance of the method is evaluated by both synthetic data and real cases. By using floods generated synthetically by an ideal model in which the true values and errors are known, the method is shown to be efficient as theoretically expected. The results show that the method is efficient and universally applicable in different cases. And the degree of forecast improvement is positively related to the fluctuation coefficient of the floods. The more severe the fluctuation of the flood hydrograph, the more robust the method. HIGHLIGHTS A robust error estimation method for real-time flood forecasting in reservoirs is developed.; A fluctuation coefficient is proposed to quantify the degree of fluctuation of a jagged reservoir inflow.; The method is demonstrated to be efficient by an ideal model and 10 reservoir basins of different characteristics.; The performance of the proposed method is positively related to the fluctuation coefficient of the floods.;

    Abstract Abstract The simulation of overland flow, wherein runoff yield and concentration are influenced by topography, is fundamental to hydrological forecasting. Therefore, critically evaluating the characteristics of overland flow under the influence of topographic depressions—which are one of the most common microtopographic structures—is vital for improving current hydrological models. In this study, we developed a solution for the real-world application of overland flow simulations under the influence of depressions in hydrological models. A relative depression storage–outflow curve (RDOC) was proposed to investigate surface outflow processes. Experiments were conducted based on the variable-controlling approach using three rainfall return periods, four slopes, and four depression rates while ensuring a consistent initial soil moisture content. A homogenized RDOC was achieved based on shape analysis; it was parameterized by the outflow threshold and the reciprocal of the curve index of two outflow stages (B and D). A relative depression storage–outflow function (RDOF) was generated and a complete calculation procedure was applied within a hydrological model. Furthermore, we analyzed the hydrological responses to parameters of different hydrological factors to improve our understanding of the parameter determination of the RDOF.

    Abstract Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common tumor worldwide, and recent epidemiological studies have indicated that obesity contributes to the morbidity and mortality of CRC. Furthermore, obesity‐related adipokines have been shown to be closely related to the incidence of CRC, but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. Here, we investigated the effects of high‐fat diet‐induced adipokines and cytokines on the development of CRC in vitro and in vivo. For the in vivo assays, we divided 2‐week‐old C57BL/6J‐ApcMin/J male mice into three groups: normal‐fat diet (ND), high‐fat and high‐sugar feed (HFHS), and high‐fat and low‐sugar feed (HFLS). After 1 week, all mice were injected with 20 mg·kg−1 1,2‐dimethylhydrazine once weekly for 10 consecutive weeks. Body weight, liver weight, epididymal fat weight and blood glucose levels were greatly increased in HFHS and HFLS groups compared with the ND group, and the expression levels of some adipokines and cytokines were obviously higher in HFHS or HFLS mice compared with ND mice. For the in vitro assays, HCT116 CRC cells were treated with sera of ND, HFHS or HFLS groups, or serum‐free media as a negative control. We observed that sera derived from HFHS or HFLS mice that contain excess adipokines and cytokines promoted the proliferation, migration and invasion of HCT116 cells compared with the ND sera‐conditioned medium or serum‐free medium group. Therefore, high‐fat diet‐induced adipokines and cytokines may promote the progression of CRC in vivo and in vitro.
