Abstract Objective: Extensor tendon adhesion receive less attention recently. This study aims to analyze influencing factors of adhesion and prolonged lost days of work in patients with extensor tendon adhesion of the hand.
Method: We performed a retrospective study in patients with extensor tendon injuries who underwent primary surgical repair and early rehabilitation. We observed the differences between non-tendon adhesion and adhesion patients after surgical repair, and used the receiver operating characteristic curve to distinguish them. Then we explored the influencing factors of adhesion. In addition, we studied the lost days of work and the influencing factors.
Results: A total of 305 patients were included. 24.6% patients appeared tendon adhesion and the mean lost days of work was 12 weeks. MHISS scores, VAS scores, occupation and blood triglyceride level were the influencing factors of adhesion. The adhesion patients have increased MHISS scores (
Conclusion: To minimize the occurrence of adhesion, doctors should pay attention to patients with higher MHISS and VAS scores, blood triglyceride levels, especial for the blue-collar and unemployed one. High triglyceride level may be a new influencing factor.

Abstract Podocyte loss is a predictor of kidney disease development, including diabetic nephropathy. Astragalus polysaccharide (APS) was considered a renoprotective drug, whereas the mechanisms operated by APS on podocyte dysfunction are rarely mentioned. This study aims at the mechanistic underlying of APS on angiotensin II (Ang II)-induced podocyte dysfunction. Mouse glomerular podocytes MPC5 were induced with Ang II, the morphologic changes were observed and nephrin, desmin and Wilms' tumour protein-1 (WT-1) levels were determined. The MPC5 cells were treated with APS (50, 100 and 200 μg/mL) and transduced with retinoic acid receptor responder protein 1 (RARRES1) overexpression vectors. The expression of RARRES1, lipocalin-2 (LCN2), nephrin and desmin was tested, MPC5 cell viability and apoptosis were evaluated, and the levels of an endocytotic receptor megalin, Bcl-2, Bax, interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1β and tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α were assessed. The binding of RARRES1 to LCN2 was predicted and verified. Mice were infused with Ang II to evaluate histopathological alterations and 24-h urinary albumin content. Ang II induction suppressed MPC5 cell viability, reduced the expression of nephrin, WT-1, megalin and Bcl-2, and augmented the expression of desmin, Bax, IL-6, IL-1β and TNF-α, which were significantly nullified by APS treatment. RARRES1 interacted with LCN2, and APS treatment inhibited RARRES1 and LCN2 expression in a dose-dependent manner, thereby alleviating Ang II-induced podocyte dysfunction. Ang II infusion in mice facilitated pathological alterations in renal tissues and increased urinary albumin content, which were attenuated after APS treatment. Overall, APS treatment alleviated Ang II-induced podocyte dysfunction by inhibiting RARRES1/LCN2 expression and blocked kidney injury development in vivo.

Abstract The contact between the dialysis membrane and blood can induce oxidative stress and thrombosis, causing oxidative organ damage and impaired toxin clearance. To date, the selection of anticoagulants has focused on mechanisms inhibiting white, but not red (erythrocytes) thrombus formation. In the present study, polyethersulfone (PES) membranes are modified with the antioxidant drug tiopronin; the physicochemical properties and dialysis performance of the Tio-PES membranes are evaluated. The effects on erythrocyte thrombosis are evaluated in terms of erythrocyte morphology, prothrombotic properties (adhesion, aggregation, viscosity, sedimentation, and hemolysis), and fibrinogen (FIB)-erythrocyte interactions. The regular anticoagulant and antiplatelet properties are also assessed. Superoxide dismutase, malondialdehyde, plasma protein, and complement C3a are further determined. Finally, the biosafety of the Tio-PES membranes is evaluated both in vitro and in vivo. The Tio-PES membranes exhibit excellent physicochemical properties and improved dialysis performance. It is found that the Tio-PES membranes stabilize erythrocyte morphology, reduce erythrocyte prothrombotic properties, decrease FIB adsorption, and prevent red thrombus formation. In addition, the Tio-PES membranes exhibit excellent antioxidant properties and show biosafety in primary toxicity studies. Thus, Tio-PES membranes hold promise as novel, safe, and effective dialysis materials for potential clinical application.

Abstract Long-term isoflurane inhalation has been reported to induce hippocampal apoptosis in young animals, whereas dexmedetomidine (DEX) can reduce isoflurane-induced neuronal apoptosis. The neuroprotective effect of miR-137 has been reported before, however, the effect of on isoflurane triggered neuronal apoptosis, and whether miR-137 is involved in the neuroprotection of DEX remain unclear. To investigate these doubts, we established an isoflurane exposure model in postnatal day 7 (P7) Sprague‒Dawley rats and the PC12 cells, containing a control group (CON), isoflurane group (ISO), DEX group (DEX) and DEX pretreatment group (DEX + ISO). We first confirmed that DEX attenuates isoflurane-induced hippocampal apoptosis. And we found DEX increased miR-137 and attenuated GSK-3β levels in the DEX and DEX + ISO groups in the hippocampus and PC12 cells. In addition, the regulative relationship of miR-137 and GSK-3β was confirmed using the TargetScan tool and dual-luciferase reporter assay. Moreover, miR-137 overexpression inhibited GSK-3β and increased its downstream gene β-catenin, whereas knockdown of miR-137 changed the GSK-3β and β-catenin expression oppositely. Upregulation of miR-137 increased the apoptosis-related genes and decreased the anti-apoptosis gene; however, knockdown of miR-137 produced the opposite results. This study suggested that DEX attenuated isoflurane-induced neuroapoptosis by upregulating the miR-137 mediated GSK-3β/β-catenin pathway in the developing rat hippocampus.

Abstract This study focused on the application of deep learning algorithms in the segmentation of CT images, so as to diagnose chronic kidney diseases accurately and quantitatively. First, the residual dual-attention module (RDA module) was used for automatic segmentation of renal cysts in CT images. 79 patients with renal cysts were selected as research subjects, of whom 27 cases were defined as the test group and 52 cases were defined as the training group. The segmentation results of the test group were evaluated factoring into the Dice similarity coefficient (DSC), precision, and recall. The experimental results showed that the loss function value of the RDA-UNET model rapidly decayed and converged, and the segmentation results of the model in the study were roughly the same as those of manual labeling, indicating that the model had high accuracy in image segmentation, and the contour of the kidney can be segmented accurately. Next, the RDA-UNET model achieved 96.25% DSC, 96.34% precision, and 96.88% recall for the left kidney and 94.22% DSC, 95.34% precision, and 94.61% recall for the right kidney, which were better than other algorithms. The results showed that the algorithm model in this study was superior to other algorithms in each evaluation index. It explained the advantages of this model compared with other algorithm models. In conclusion, the RDA-UNET model can effectively improve the accuracy of CT image segmentation, and it is worth of promotion in the quantitative assessment of chronic kidney diseases through CT imaging.

Abstract A good understanding of the accuracy of the Global Positioning System (GPS) surface displacements provided by different processing centers plays an important role in load deformation analysis. We estimate the noise level in both vertical and horizontal directions for four representative GPS time series products, and compare GPS results with load deformation derived from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) gravity measurements and climate models in Europe. For the extracted linear trend signals, the differences among different GPS series are small in all the three (east, north, and up) directions, while for the annual signals the differences are large. The mean standard deviations of annual amplitudes retrieved from the four GPS series are 3.54 mm in the vertical component (69% of the signal itself) and ~ 0.3 mm in the horizontal component (30% of the signal itself). The Scripps Orbit and Permanent Array Center (SOPAC) and MEaSUREs series have the lowest noise level in vertical and horizontal directions, respectively. Through consistency/discrepancy analysis among GPS, GRACE, and model vertical series, we find that the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and Nevada Geodetic Laboratory (NGL) series show good consistency, the SOPAC series show good agreements in annual signal with the GRACE and model, and the MEaSUREs series show substantially large annual amplitude. We discuss the possible reasons for the notable differences among GPS time series products.

Abstract Abstract Non-volatile memories (NVMs) have the potential to reshape next-generation memory systems because of their promising properties of near-zero leakage power consumption, high density and non-volatility. However, NVMs also face critical security threats that exploit the non-volatile property. Compared to volatile memory, the capability of retaining data even after power down makes NVM more vulnerable. Existing solutions to address the security issues of NVMs are mainly based on Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), which incurs significant performance and power overhead. In this paper, we propose a lightweight memory encryption/decryption scheme by exploiting in-situ memory operations with negligible overhead. To validate the feasibility of the encryption/decryption scheme, device-level and array-level experiments are performed using ferroelectric field effect transistor (FeFET) as an example NVM without loss of generality. Besides, a comprehensive evaluation is performed on a 128 × 128 FeFET AND-type memory array in terms of area, latency, power and throughput. Compared with the AES-based scheme, our scheme shows ~22.6×/~14.1× increase in encryption/decryption throughput with negligible power penalty. Furthermore, we evaluate the performance of our scheme over the AES-based scheme when deploying different neural network workloads. Our scheme yields significant latency reduction by 90% on average for encryption and decryption processes.

Abstract We carry out synthetic experiments of mass load inversion using Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) vertical and horizontal displacements in Central China. Using two synthetic mass load models from a checkerboard mass distribution and a more realistic distribution derived from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) observations, the inverted mass changes are determined based on the load theory and then compared with the known mass‐change inputs. We find that the combination of horizontal displacements with the commonly used vertical displacements significantly improves the inversion results when the number of sites is larger than one third of the number of total grids with relatively uniform distribution over the region. Synthetic tests demonstrate that data from the Crustal Movement Observation Network of China, including the total number of GNSS sites, spatial distribution, and precision, are sufficient to infer the annual amplitudes of mass changes in the region with comparable spatial resolution as that of GRACE observations. For the current precision level of the GNSS surface displacements (3.0 mm in the vertical and 1.0 mm in the horizontal components), including horizontal displacements leads to ∼10% improvement in mass inversion, compared to using vertical displacements only. With a higher precision level of 0.50 and 0.17 mm (for vertical and horizontal components, respectively), an improvement of ∼20% can be achieved.

Abstract The classification of livelihood strategies is important for designing effective and targeted poverty-reducing strategies. This paper classified livelihood strategies adopting the activity choice approach and compared differences among income levels, asset endowments, poverty rates, and poverty causes of different household clusters to provide bases for the identification of targeted poverty-reducing strategies. By making the two-step cluster analysis, 2042 households were divided into four clusters. Agricultural households get a relatively low income because of the reliance on agricultural production and the lack of required assets to enter more remunerative livelihood strategies. Self-employment is the most remunerative livelihood strategy and high physical and financial capital accumulations are the premise of adopting a self-employed strategy. Featured with a medium-level income and asset endowments, wage-employed households benefit from a more-educated labor force and shoulder a heavy burden caused by children’s education at the same time. Besides, rural households face a series of social issues from labor migration, especially self-employed and wage-employed households. Non-labor households have a low-level income and asset endowments with older family members and an unhealthier labor force caused mainly by the aging population and accompanying diseases and disabilities. The transfer income-oriented non-labor households are the main object of poverty alleviation.
