Abstract We suggest a unimer-assisted exfoliation method for the exfoliation of van der Waals two-dimensional (2D) materials such as graphene, MoS₂, and h-BN and show that the micellar size is a critical parameter for enhancing the exfoliation efficiency. To explain the effectiveness of the unimers in the exfoliation, the influence of the micellar size of a biocompatible block copolymer, Pluronic F-68, is evaluated in view of the yield and thickness of exfoliated 2D flakes. By the addition of water-soluble alcohols, the surfactants exist in the form of a unimer, which facilitates the intercalation into the layered materials and their exfoliation. The results showed that the high exfoliation efficiency could be achieved by controlling the micellar size mostly to be unimers; the average yield rate of MoS₂ exfoliation was 4.51% per hour, and the very high concentration of 1.45 mg/mL was obtained by sonication for 3 h. We also suggested the dielectrophoresis technique as a method for forming a film composed of 2D flakes for diverse applications requiring electrical signals. The unimer-assisted exfoliation method will be substantially utilized to achieve highly concentrated aqueous dispersion solutions of 2D materials.

Abstract The exfoliation of graphite was investigated in aqueous solutions containing sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as a surfactant. The exfoliation was greatly enhanced near the surface aggregation concentration (SAC) of SDS, 2.6mM, and then decreased for higher SDS contents. However, the flakes exfoliated near the SAC were graphite, whereas graphene was obtained above the critical micelle concentration (CMC). The effect of the use of alcohols as surface-tension-reducing agents (STRAs) on the exfoliation was then investigated. With ethyl alcohol, a dispersion of 2.1mgml−1 graphene was achieved from 2.6mM SDS after only 1h of sonication, whereas a dispersion of 0.2mgml−1 was obtained above the CMC in the absence of STRAs. The results demonstrate that the SDS content near the SAC is highly beneficial for exfoliation as long as the surface tension is maintained near 41.0mNml−1. This finding supports the notion that the structure of the adsorbed SDS, depending on its concentration, strongly affects the exfoliation of graphite into graphene.

Abstract Uniform and reproducible alignment methods for one-dimensional structures, such as wires, tubes, and fibers are essential for the fabrication of commercial devices. This paper presents an arbitrary alignment-angle control method. The mechanical stretching of arbitrarily aligned fibers can be increased by as much as 120%. Stretchable electrodes that stably maintain their electro-optical properties against large mechanical deformations are essential for the fabrication of wearable electronics. For randomly distributed fibers, fiber-to-fiber contact resistance has a detrimental effect on the carrier transport. The proposed method aligns fibers into a uniform array to reduce the fiber-to-fiber contact resistance between fibers using parallel-aligned bars. The results demonstrate the feasibility of applying the transfer-free alignment method along a specific alignment-angle for fabricating stretchable metal fiber networks. Fibers are aligned directly onto the sample surface by mounting the alignment jig onto the conventional collecting plate. This transfer-free strategy avoids the deformation and overlap of aligned patterns during the conventional transferring process.
