Abstract The flexible job scheduling problem with automated guided vehicles (FJSP-AGVs) is a simplified model of some real manufacturing industries. It contains three strongly coupled subproblems: operation sequences assignment, machine selection, and automatic guided vehicle selection, leading to a huge solution space. Its several unresolved challenges, i.e., problem model and algorithmic designing, persist. Therefore, we first adopt the sequence-based modeling method to establish a mixed-integer linear programming model with makespan, and its correctness is verified by using the Gurobi solver. Subsequently, a multi-strategy-driven genetic algorithm (Mult_stra_GA) is proposed based on the implicit features of FJSP-AGVs. In Mult_stra_GA, for the operation sequence (OS) and the machine assignment (MS) subproblems, we design three targeted strategies, i.e., two layer-based encoding and decoding strategy, a multiple heuristics-based initialization strategy, double crossover, and dual mutation operators. Meanwhile, the problem-specific diversity checking and restart strategies are introduced to avoid Mult_stra_GA falling into local optima. Finally, we conduct experiments on four well-known benchmarks. Through the statistical analysis, the outcomes demonstrate that the Mult_stra_GA algorithm exhibits efficacy when contrasted with other advanced algorithms.

Abstract Adventitious roots (ARs) have an unmatched status in plant growth and metabolism due to the degeneration of primary roots in lotuses. In the present study, we sought to assess the effect of sucrose on ARs formation and observed that lignin synthesis was involved in ARs development. We found that the lignification degree of the ARs primordium was weaker in plants treated with 20 g/L sucrose than in 50 g/L sucrose treatment and control plants. The contents of lignin were lower in plants treated with 20 g/L sucrose and higher in plants treated with 50 g/L sucrose. The precursors of monomer lignin, including p-coumaric acid, caffeate, sinapinal aldehyde, and ferulic acid, were lower in the GL50 library than in the GL20 library. Further analysis revealed that the gene expression of these four metabolites had no novel difference in the GL50/GL20 libraries. However, a laccase17 gene ( NnLAC17 ), involved in polymer lignin synthesis, had a higher expression in the GL50 library than in the GL20 library. Therefore, NnLAC17 was cloned and the overexpression of NnLAC17 was found to directly result in a decrease in the root number in transgenic Arabidopsis plants. These findings suggest that lignin synthesis is probably involved in ARs formation in lotus seedlings.

Abstract The distributed hybrid flow shop scheduling problem (DHFSP), which integrates distributed manufacturing models with parallel machines, has gained significant attention. However, in actual scheduling, some adjacent machines do not have buffers between them, resulting in blocking. This paper focuses on addressing the DHFSP with blocking constraints (DBHFSP) based on the actual production conditions. To solve DBHFSP, we construct a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model for DBHFSP and validate its correctness using the Gurobi solver. Then, an advanced iterated greedy (AIG) algorithm is designed to minimize the makespan, in which we modify the Nawaz, Enscore, and Ham (NEH) heuristic to solve blocking constraints. To balance the global and local search capabilities of AIG, two effective inter-factory neighborhood search strategies and a swap-based local search strategy are designed. Additionally, each factory is mutually independent, and the movement within one factory does not affect the others. In view of this, we specifically designed a memory-based decoding method for insertion operations to reduce the computation time of the objective. Finally, two shaking strategies are incorporated into the algorithm to mitigate premature convergence. Five advanced algorithms are used to conduct comparative experiments with AIG on 80 test instances, and experimental results illustrate that the makespan and the relative percentage increase (RPI) obtained by AIG are 1.0% and 86.1%, respectively, better than the comparative algorithms.

Abstract Background: Adventitious roots (ARs) represent an important organ system for water and nutrient uptake in lotus plants because of degeneration of the principal root. The WUSCHEL-related homeobox (WOX) gene regulates plant development and growth by affecting the expression of several other genes. In this study, three WOX genes, NnWOX1-1, NnWOX4-3, and NnWOX5-1, were isolated and their functions were assessed in Arabidopsis plants.
Results: The full lengths of NnWOX1-1, NnWOX4-3, and NnWOX5-1 were 1038, 645, and 558 bp, encoding 362, 214, and 185 amino acid residues, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis classified NnWOX1-1 and NnWOX4-3 encoding proteins into one group, and NnWOX5-1 and MnWOX5 encoding proteins exhibited strong genetic relationships. The three genes were induced by sucrose and indoleacetic acid (IAA) and exhibited organ-specific expression characteristics. In addition to improving root growth and salt tolerance, NnWOX1-1 and NnWOX4-3 promoted stem development in transgenic Arabidopsis plants. A total of 751, 594, and 541 genes, including 19, 19, and 13 respective genes related to ethylene and IAA metabolism and responses, were enhanced in NnWOX1-1, NnWOX4-3, and NnWOX5-1 transgenic plants, respectively. Further analysis showed that ethylene production rates in transgenic plants increased, whereas IAA, peroxidase, and lignin content did not significantly change. Exogenous application of ethephon on lotus seedlings promoted AR formation and dramatically increased the fresh and dry weights of the plants.
Conclusions: NnWOX1-1, NnWOX4-3, and NnWOX5-1 influence root formation, stem development, and stress adaptation in transgenic Arabidopsis plants by affecting the transcription of multiple genes. Among these, changes in gene expression involving ethylene metabolism and responses likely critically affect the development of Arabidopsis plants. In addition, ethylene may represent an important factor affecting AR formation in lotus seedlings.

Abstract We report a systematic study on the thickness-dependent superconductivity and transport properties in exfoliated layered topological superconductor β -PdBi 2 . The superconducting transition temperature T c is found to decrease with the decreasing thickness. Below a critical thickness of 45 nm, the superconductivity is suppressed, but followed by an abrupt resistance jump near T c , which is in opposite to the behavior in a superconductor. We attribute suppressed T c to the enhanced disorder as the thickness decreases. The possible physical mechanisms were discussed for the origination of sharply increased resistance in thinner β -PdBi 2 samples.

Abstract With the wide application of static magnetic fields (SMFs), the risk of living organisms exposed to man-made magnetic fields that the intensity is much higher than geomagnetic field has gradually increased. Reproductive system is highly sensitive to environmental stress; however, the influence of high SMFs on reproduction system is still largely unknown. Here we explored the biological responses of SMFs exposure at an intensity of 10 T on the sperms and their offspring in him-5 male mutants of Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans). The size of unactivated sperms was deceased by 10 T SMF exposure, instead of the morphology. Exposure to 10 T SMF significantly altered the function of sperms in him-5 worms including the activation of sperms and the non-transferred ratio of sperms. In addition, the brood size assay revealed that 10 T SMF exposure eventually diminished the reproductive capacity of him‐5 male worms. The lifespan of outcrossed offspring from exposed him-5 male mutants and unexposed fog-2 female mutants was decreased by 10 T SMF in a time dependent manner. Together, our findings provide novel information regarding the adverse effects of high SMFs on the sperms of C. elegans and their offspring, which can improve our understanding of the fundamental aspects of high SMFs on biological system.

Abstract MicroRNA (miRNA)-regulated gene expression plays an important role in various plant metabolic processes. Although adventitious roots are critical to plant growth in lotus, the role of miRNA in AR formation remains unclear. Expression profiling of miRNAs was carried out during three different developmental stages of ARs in lotus: no induction of AR stage, initial stage of ARs, and maximum number of ARs. These data are referenced with the whole lotus genome as already identified through high-throughput tag-sequencing. 1.3 × 107 tags were achieved, of which 11,035,798, 11,436,062, and 12,542,392 clean tags were obtained from each stage, respectively. miRNA analysis revealed that miRNAs were less than 10% among all small RNAs. In total, 310 miRNAs (240 up-regulated and 70 down-regulated miRNAs) exhibited expression changes from the no induction stage to the initial stage. Moreover, expression of 140 miRNAs was increased and that of 123 miRNAs was decreased between the initial and maximum AR stages, mostly by ~ − 4–4-fold. miRNAs involved in metabolic pathways differed between the initial stage/no induction stage and the maximum number stage/initial stage. Several miRNAs in the initial stage/no induction stage were related to plant hormone metabolism and pyruvate and MAPK pathways, while major miRNAs in the maximum number stage/initial stage were involved in carbohydrate metabolism. All differentially expressed miRNAs associated with AR formation from the initial stage to maximum stage were also analyzed. The expression of 16 miRNAs was determined using qRT-PCR. This work provides a general insight into miRNA regulation during AR formation in lotus.

Abstract Abstract We present evidences that defects in the spin S = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain (HAFC) compound can lead to ferromagnetism by studying the magnetic and thermal properties of the newly discovered quasi-one-dimensional (1D) metal–organic framework [CH3NH3][Cu(HCOO)3] (MACuF). Our findings suggest that the long-range ferromagnetic order at 3.7 K can be attributed to Cu2+ ions from the 2D networks constructed by the endpoints of the broken chains. In such a case, the intrinsic magnetism can emerge in this quasi-1D Heisenberg chain system at the background of the short-range antiferromagnetism. This unusual ferromagnetism found in HAFC not only enriches magnetic features in the low-dimensional systems, but helps to understand some of the exotic magnetic phenomena in other real quasi-1D magnetic materials.

Abstract In this study, we propose an improved iterated greedy algorithm for solving the distributed permutation flowshop problem, where there is a single robot in each factory and the makespan needs to be minimized. In the problem considered, the robot is used to transfer each job from the predecessor machine to the successor machine. A blocking constraint between machines is considered, thus jobs should remain on the completed machine while waiting for the robot. The loading and unloading times are considered and different for all of the jobs conducted by the robot, and the deteriorating time is also considered. In the proposed algorithm, first, four types of neighborhood structures are developed. Then, the simulated annealing algorithm is embedded in the proposed algorithm to enhance the exploration abilities. Furthermore, a problem-specific destruction and construction strategies are investigated. Finally, several realistic instances were generated to test the proposed algorithm, and its competitive performance was verified based on detailed experimental comparisons.
