    Abstract A novel type of detachable precast concrete column-column joint (DPC) is proposed in this study to solve the problems in current column-column dry connections including complex load path, uncertainty of structural stiffness of beam-column joints and inconvenience for disassembly. The dry connection technology is applied by composing of steel plate and concrete. Finite element models of DPC were created to study its structural performance including hysteresis curve, skeleton curve, ductility, and energy dissipation capacity. The benchmark models are firstly established and validated against the test data and after that a small-scale parametric study is prepared. The effect of axial pressure ratio and eccentricity distance size on the seismic performance of DPC was studied. Results indict that the optimal value of axial pressure ratio ranges from 0.5 to 0.7. With increase of the axial pressure ratio, the ductility coefficient shows a decreasing trend in general. The eccentricity has little effect on the energy dissipation capacity of the joint.

    Abstract The characteristics of swell propagation play an important role in the forecasting of ocean waves as well as on research on global climate change, wave energy development, and disaster prevention and reduction. To reveal the propagation routes, terminal targets and speeds of swells that originate from the southern Indian Ocean westerly (SIOW), an intraseasonal swell index (SI) was defined based on the 45 year (September 1957 to August 2002) ERA‐40 wave reanalysis data product from the European Center for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). The results show that the main body of the SIOW‐related swells typically spread to the waters off Sri Lanka and Christmas Island, while the branches spread to the Arabian Sea and other waters. The propagation speeds of swells originated in the SIOW were fastest in May and August, followed by November, and were slowest in February. Swells usually required 4–6 days to propagate from the western part of the SIOW to the waters off Sri Lanka and Christmas Island, whereas swells usually required 2–4 days to propagate from the eastern part of the SIOW to the waters off Christmas Island.

    Abstract The propagation characteristics of swell energy are important for applications such as swell wave power generation, ocean wave forecasting, disaster prevention and reduction, etc. However, the study on the propagation of swell energy is still relatively rare. This study proposed a new method to exhibit the exact propagation route and speed and intraseasonal oscillation of swell energy. The Indian Ocean is selected as a case study, using the 45-year (1957.09–2002.08) European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Reanalysis (ERA-40) wave reanalysis dataset. The main results are as follows. (1) empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis and 6-hourly zonal averages of swell wave power density (WPD) show that the Indian Ocean swell energy has an obvious but fluctuating northeastward propagation. (2) The swell energy of the southwest Indian Ocean generally spreads to two regions: the main body propagates in a NE–NNE direction to Sri Lankan waters, while a small branch propagates to Christmas Island waters. (3) Swell energy in the west of the southern Indian Ocean westerly (SIOW), in Sri Lankan waters, and in Christmas Island waters share a common period of quasi-weekly oscillation. Swell energy takes ∼6days to propagate from the west of the SIOW to Sri Lankan and Christmas Island waters. Swell energy propagates faster during June–September than in other months.

    Abstract Eggshell quality is associated with hatchability, and ultrastructural organization is an important eggshell quality parameter. To the determine the relationship of shell ultrastructural properties with hatchability, we measured the effect of eggshell thickness, mammillary layer thickness, and the average size of mammillary cones on hatchability. Eggs with thick shells and thick mammillary layers had the highest incidence of hatching. As such, hatchability correlated positively with both eggshell thickness (r = 0.30; P < 0.05) and mammillary layer thickness (r = 0.28; P < 0.05). In addition, the correlation between the average size of mammillary cones and hatchability was not statistically significant. However, a significant positive correlation was observed between the average size of mammillary cones and mammillary layer thickness. It can be concluded that eggshell thickness and mammillary layer thickness affect hatchability.

    Abstract A retrospective analysis was made on 85 cases of trial labor after previous cesarean section (CS) and compared with 100 primiparous vaginal deliveries (as control) during the last 10 years. Oxytocin infusion has been used in 61 trial cases to induce and/or to accelerate labor, and valium, procaine and atropine administered during the labor process in 23 of them. 65 of the 85 cases (76.5%) successfully delivered through the vagina (VD group), while 20 cases (23.5%) had repeat CS following failure in trial labor (CS group), and 3 women had reatened uterine rupture. There was 1 neonatal death in the VD trial labor group. No obvious difference in the Apgar scores of newborns was found between the CS group and the controls, and the duration of the labor process was much shorter in the VD trial group than that in the primiparae (7.51 +/- 2.44 hrs vs. 9.10 +/- 3.75 hrs) (P < 0.01). This study indicated that following a previous uneventful transverse lower segment cesarean section, trial labor should be encouraged under supervision.
