    Abstract Diabetes mellitus and dyslipidemia are well-known risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Unfortunately, the prevalence of dyslipidemia and diabetes mellitus among individuals over 30 years of age in Korea has continuously increased. The current study therefore investigated the association between dyslipidemia and high glycated hemoglobin (Hemoglobin A1c, HbA1c) levels according to age group in adults over 20 years old. We used data from the 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 2016 to 2017. Glycated hemoglobin, a well-established marker for elevated glucose levels, was categorized into three groups, normal (<5.7%), prediabetes (5.7-6.4%), and diabetes (≥6.5%). The presence of dyslipidemia was defined based on a diagnosis of dyslipidemia by a physician. Logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the association between the prevalence of dyslipidemia and glycated hemoglobin according to age group. After adjusting for possible confounders, including age, sex, body mass index, marital status, education, occupation, household income, drinking, and smoking, we found a significant increase in the odds ratios (ORs) for dyslipidemia in the prediabetes (OR; 1.915, 95% CI; 1.696 to 2.163) and diabetes (OR; 3.533, 95% CI; 3.019 to 4.134) groups. Among subjects with higher glycated hemoglobin levels, those in their 40s or over had significantly increased odds for dyslipidemia. The current study found an association between high glycated hemoglobin levels and a diagnosis of dyslipidemia among Korean adults. Markers of lipid metabolism in adults with high glycated hemoglobin levels may need to be monitored, especially those in their 40s and older.

    Abstract Glaucoma, particularly primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), poses a significant global health concern. Distinguished by intraocular pressure (IOP), POAG encompasses high-tension glaucoma (HTG) and normal-tension glaucoma (NTG). Apolipoprotein E (APOE) is a multifaceted protein with roles in lipid metabolism, neurobiology, and neurodegenerative diseases. However, controversies persist regarding the impact of APOE single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on open-angle glaucoma and NTG. This study aimed to identify APOE-specific SNPs influencing NTG risk. A cohort of 178 patients with NTG recruited from Uijeongbu St. Mary's Hospital and 32,858 individuals from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES) cohort were included in the analysis. Genotype and haplotype analyses were performed on three promoter SNPs (rs449647, rs769446, and rs405509) and two exonic SNPs (rs429358 and rs7412) located on chromosome 19. Among the five SNPs, rs769446 genotypes exhibited significant differences between cases and controls. The minor allele C of rs769446 emerged as a protective factor against NTG. Furthermore, haplotype analysis of the five SNPs revealed that the A-T-G-T-T haplotype was a statistically significant risk factor for NTG. This study indicated an association between APOE promoter SNPs and NTG in the Korean population. Further studies are required to understand how APOE promoter SNPs contribute to NTG pathogenesis.

    Abstract Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease worldwide. Given its prevalence, reliable biomarkers for early diagnosis are required. Exosomal proteins within extracellular nanovesicles are promising candidates for diagnostic, screening, prognostic, and disease monitoring purposes in neurological diseases such as PD. This review aims to evaluate the potential of extracellular vesicle proteins or miRNAs as biomarkers for PD. A comprehensive literature search until January 2024 was conducted across multiple databases, including PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library, to identify relevant studies reporting exosome biomarkers in blood samples from PD patients. Out of 417 articles screened, 47 studies were selected for analysis. Among exosomal protein biomarkers, α-synuclein, tau, Amyloid β 1-42, and C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 12 (CXCL12) were identified as significant markers for PD. Concerning miRNA biomarkers, miRNA-24, miR-23b-3p, miR-195-3p, miR-29c, and mir-331-5p are promising across studies. α-synuclein exhibited increased levels in PD patients compared to control groups in twenty-one studies, while a decrease was observed in three studies. Our meta-analysis revealed a significant difference in total exosomal α-synuclein levels between PD patients and healthy controls (standardized mean difference [SMD] = 1.369, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.893 to 1.846,

    Abstract Onions are typically consumed as the bulb, but the peel and root are discarded as by-products during processing. This study investigated the potential functional use of these by-products by analyzing the polyphenols, antioxidant compounds, and antioxidant activity contained in onions. In this study, the bulb, peel, and root of five onion cultivars ('Tank', 'Bomul', 'Gujji' 'Cobra', and 'Hongbanjang') harvested in Korea were investigated. Caffeic acid and quercetin were most abundant in the peel, whereas methyl gallate was the predominant polyphenol in the bulb. Both DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity were higher in onion peel and root than in the bulb. These findings suggest that onion peel and roots, which are often discarded, have abundant antioxidant substances and excellent antioxidant activity. This study provides basic data for the future use of onion peel and roots as functional ingredients with high added value.

    Abstract Background: Jones fractures are common injuries that can be treated conservatively or surgically. However, the optimal treatment approach remains controversial. This study aimed to compare the clinical outcomes of conservative and operative treatments for Jones fractures and determine whether surgical treatment is necessary.
    Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 69 patients with Jones fractures treated at our hospital. The patients were divided into 2 groups: conservative (C group; n = 46) and operative (O group; n = 23) treatments. Patients were followed up after 2, 6, and 12 weeks, and every 3 months thereafter. However, outpatient follow-ups were conducted between 8 and 10 weeks as needed. The mean follow-up period was 14.5 weeks (range, 12-24 weeks). In group C, the patients were treated with a non-weight-bearing cast for 4-6 weeks, followed by additional weight-bearing boot immobilization before returning to exercise. In group O, patients were treated surgically using a bicortical screw or intramedullary internal fixation. Time to radiologic union, clinical union, return to sports, visual analog scale (VAS), Foot Function Index-Revised Short Form (FFI-RS), and American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) scores were evaluated.
    Results: Sixty-nine patients were included in the analysis. There were statistically significant differences in the time to radiologic union and return to sports, VAS score in the second week, and FFI-RS score in the 12th week. In group C, favorable outcomes were observed in terms of the time to return to sports, VAS score in the second week, and FFI-RS score in the 12th week. Contrastingly, in group O, better results were observed in time to radiologic union. The AOFAS score was excellent at the final follow-up, with no significant differences between groups. Complication rates were 10.8% and 13% in groups C and O, respectively.
    Conclusions: Surgical treatment is sometimes necessary for Jones fractures, but conservative treatment should also be considered because of the favorable outcomes. Conservative treatment can be a good option for patients who are risk-averse and place a high value on fracture healing without surgery.

    Abstract Background: Iron and anemia-related markers in long-distance runners have mostly been investigated following single distance marathons, with contradictory findings. This study compared iron and anemia-related markers according to marathon distance.
    Methods: Iron and anemia-related markers were analyzed from blood samples of healthy, adult male (aged ≥40-60 years) long-distance runners before and after ultramarathon races of 100 km (N.=14), 308 km (N.=14), and 622 km (N.=10). Fe, total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), unsaturated iron-binding capacity (UIBC), transferrin saturation, ferritin, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), white blood cell (WBC), red blood cell (RBC), hemoglobin (Hb), and hematocrit (Hct) levels were analyzed.
    Results: On completion of all races, the iron levels and transferrin saturation decreased (P<0.05), while the ferritin and hs-CRP levels and WBC counts significantly increased (P<0.05). The Hb concentrations increased after the 100-km race (P<0.05), although the Hb levels and Hct decreased after the 308- and 622-km races (P<0.05). The highest-to-lowest levels of unsaturated iron-binding capacity were found following the 100-km, 622-km, and 308-km races, whereas those of the RBC count were found following the 622-km, 100-km, and 308-km races. Ferritin levels were significantly higher following the 308-km race than after the 100-km race (P<0.05); hs-CRP levels in the 308- and 622-km races were higher than those in the 100-km race.
    Conclusions: Ferritin levels increased due to inflammation following distance races, and runners experienced transient iron deficiency without anemia. However, the differences in iron and anemia-related markers according to the ultramarathon distance remain unclear.
