Abstract Introduction: Some probable mechanisms have been described to the relationship between magnesium (Mg) level and migraine headache attacks. In the study reported here, we sought to determine the total Mg serum status of patients with migraine within and between the headache attacks and compare it with non-migraineurs.
Methods: This study was performed on 50 migraineurs patients diagnosed according to the International Headache Society (IHS) criteria for acute migraine headache. Fifty healthy subjects without any family history or evidences of migraine were randomly selected from hospital personnel as the control group. Serum Mg level was measured by Xylidyl blue method.
Results: In the group with migraine headache, no significant difference was found in the serum total Mg levels within and between migraine headache attacks (1.86 ± 0.41 mg/dl versus 1.95 ± 0.35 mg/dl, p = 0.224). But, serum total Mg level was notably lower in the group with these attacks compared to the control group (1.86 ± 0.41 mg/dl versus 2.10 ± 0.23 mg/dl, p < 0.001).
Conclusion: Serum Mg level is on average significantly reduced in patients with migraine compared to the healthy group. However, the serum total Mg levels in migraineurs remained constant within and between migraine headache attacks.

Abstract To evaluate renal side-effects of anti-epileptic medication by valproate (VPA) and carbamazepine (CBZ), we performed a prospective study to assess renal tubular function by measuring N-acetyl-β glucosaminidase (NAG)/Cr activity index in epileptic children. The study was conducted on 112 children who were diagnosed with epilepsy (28 patients were observed before treatment with anti-epileptics, 28 children were administered VPA, 28 children were treated with CBZ, and 28 healthy children were selected age &sex matched for). An especial NAG assay kit was used for quantitative measuring of NAG in patient urine samples. The patients receiving VPA exhibited higher rate of NAG activity compared with the two groups which not receiving anti-epileptic drugs. Measurement of urinary NAG/Cr index in the children who received CBZ also, was significantly higher than those who were not administered anti-epileptic drugs. The measurement of NAG/Cr index in the VPA group was significantly higher than that in the CBZ group (NAG index: 2.75 versus 1.71). Children on anti-epileptic treatment with VPA or CBZ might demonstrate signs of renal tubular dysfunction, reflected by NAG/Cr activity index. This side effect can be potentially more occurred following VPA administration.

Abstract Gene therapy consists of the introduction of genetic material into cells for a therapeutic purpose. The understanding of the basics of the molecular and cellular mechanisms in disease treatments has resulted in the development of high-tech gene transfer materials with improved therapeutic efficacy. Based on the results of more than 2000 clinical trials to date, gene therapy is going to be included in standard treatment approaches in some specific diseases. Also, gene therapy has been highly improved in central and peripheral nervous system diseases. This review tried to focus on techniques and approaches in brain tumors and nervous system’s gene therapy strategies and will discuss about associated problems and potential future in management of inherited or acquired neurological disorders.
