Abstract This article-interview with the poet Elvira Espejo Ayca discusses the process of recovering the sacred songs of the Aymara and Quechua indigenous communities through the oral tradition from her grandmother Gregoria Mamani and her great-great-grandmother Martina Pumala. The song-poems preserve Inca meanings and aesthetics that the indigenous people used during Colonization to maintain good relations with the Spanish domain and, in turn, mask those referring to the Inca deities. Some songs have been taken up to unravel the lyrical resources of colonial times and recreate the original songs of the ancestors with the community of Kurmi Wasi School in Bolivia, a musical production that was recorded under the name of Sami Kirki in 2018, which was included in the last Espejo’s book Kirki Qhañi (2022).

Abstract Objective. The objective of this artcicle is to evaluate two terminology extraction techniques: manual terminology extraction and automated terminology extraction, to assess the effectiveness of each process in obtaining useful terms for the construction of a library thesaurus. Method. The methodology used was exploratory-quantitative and was based on two terminology extraction experiments: (1) manual extraction and (2) automated extraction. The manual terminology extraction process was carried out by a professional with multidisciplinary academic training, while the automated terminology extraction process was carried out using WordStat program. Both, manual and automated extraction processes were based on the same corpus, consisting of 283,585 words corresponding to 59 articles about library and information science that were published in the journal Investigación Bibliotecológica during the years 2019 and 2020. Results. The results show that: manual terminology extraction provided excellent results, 82% of the terms were useful and were established as viable descriptors for the thesaurus. In comparison, automated extraction was a time-consuming process, but only 12% of the terms proved useful and were established as viable descriptors for the thesaurus. Conclusions. It was found that each of the terminology retrieval techniques was useful but presented differences. While manual extraction required a high investment of human resources and time, its results also showed high effectiveness. In contrast, automated extraction required less human investment and was fast in time, but its results in this experiment were less accurate and useful. It is concluded that experimentation with various terminology extraction techniques is important, associated with the terminology base that is the cornerstone of any controlled vocabulary.

Abstract Marine transitional environments play an important role in human sustainability. Around these ecosystems, coastal lagoons are subject to high anthropogenic pressure from population growth. The increased demand for goods and services is associated with the elevated discharge of untreated and treated wastewater into lagoon systems. The absence of benthic organisms in lagoon environments has been linked to extreme natural conditions and severe anthropogenic impact at both spatial and temporal scales. However, the mechanisms that lead to the presence of azoic sediments in lagoon environments have yet to be studied. This study aimed to determine the vertical variability of textural groups, geochemistry, and benthic foraminiferal fauna to understand how natural and anthropogenic components generate a vertical sediment sequence with low or absent benthic foraminifera in a subtropical coastal lagoon in the southwestern end of the Gulf of California. A 41 cm-long sediment core was collected from La Paz Lagoon at a 1-m depth. The core was sectioned every centimeter, and sediment subsamples were dried and homogenized for grain size, calcium carbonate, elemental and isotopic carbon and nitrogen analyses, and benthic foraminifera quantification. Muds with fine sands towards the core's base characterized the sedimentary sequence. Organic carbon and total nitrogen increased from the base (1.4% and 0.06%, respectively) to the core-top (CT, 3.0% and 0.14%, respectively), significant from the 27 cm interval. Calcium carbonate content was very low (<0.8%). The relationship of δ

Abstract Enzymatic hydrolysis of organic waste is gaining relevance as a complementary technology to conventional biological treatments. Moreover, biorefineries are emerging as a sustainable scenario to integrate waste valorization and high-value bioproducts production. However, their application on municipal solid waste is still limited. This study systematically evaluates the techno-economic feasibility of the conversion of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) into high-value bioproducts through enzymatic hydrolysis. Two key variables are examined: (a) the source of the enzymes: commercial or on-site produced using OFMSW, and (b) the treatment of the solid hydrolyzate fraction: solid-state fermentation (SSF) for the production of biopesticides or anaerobic digestion for the production of energy. As a result, four different biorefinery scenarios are generated and compared in terms of profitability. Results showed that the most profitable scenario was to produce enzymes on-site and valorize the solid fraction via SSF, with an internal rate of return of 13%. This scenario led to higher profit margins (74%) and a reduced payback time (6 years), in contrast with commercial enzymes that led to an unprofitable biorefinery. Also, the simultaneous production of higher-value bioproducts and energy reduced the economic dependence of OFMSW treatment on policy instruments while remaining energetically self-sufficient. The profitability of the biorefinery scenarios evaluated was heavily dependent on the enzyme price and the efficiency of the anaerobic digestion process, highlighting the importance of cost-efficient enzyme production alternatives and high-quality OFMSW. This paper contributes to understanding the potential role of enzymes in future OFMSW biorefineries and offers economical insights on different configurations.

Abstract Cognitive and behavioral comorbidities: AN UNWANTED EFFECT OF ANTIEPILEPTIC DRUGS IN CHILDREN: Adriana Ulate-Campos, Iván Sánchez Fernández Seminars in Pediatric Neurology Volume 24, Issue 4, November 2017, Pages 320-330 Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders and, despite optimally chosen and dosed antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), approximately 20%-30% of patients will continue to have seizures. Behavior and cognition are negatively impacted by seizures, but AEDs are also a major contributor to behavioral and cognitive deficits. However, the cognitive and behavioral effect of AEDs in children is insufficiently emphasized in the literature. This review summarizes the cognitive and behavioral effects of AEDs in the pediatric population with the objective of helping pediatricians and pediatric neurologists to select the AEDs with the best profile for their individual patient's needs.

Abstract Monodominant tree communities can have phenotypic trait variation (intraspecific variation) as extreme as the trait variation across a forest with higher species diversity. An example of such forests is those composed of Quercus, an important genus of woody angiosperms in the montane neotropical forest. The Andean oak, or Quercus humboldtii Bonpl., is the sole member of this genus in South America and a characteristic component of montane ecosystems. Although there are several studies on the ecology and genetic structure of this species, there are few studies on the functional trait diversity among populations. Understanding functional traits can improve our comprehension of how organisms respond to various environmental conditions. In this study, we aimed to evaluate differences in six functional traits in individuals of the Andean oak, in two ontogenetic stages (juveniles and adults) from three populations with contrasting environmental conditions. Additionally, using T-statistics, we assessed the impact of external filters (e.g., climate, resource availability, large-scale biotic interactions) on population assembly. We found a remarkable level of functional differentiation among Andean oak forests, with all traits differing between populations and five traits differing between ontogenetic stages. External filters had a stronger influence in populations with more extreme environmental conditions. These findings emphasize the dynamic and context-dependent nature of functional traits in this species. However, given the limited exploration of functional diversity in Andean oak populations, further studies are needed to inform conservation efforts.
