    Abstract Magnetic soft actuators and robots have attracted considerable attention in biomedical applications due to their speedy response, programmability, and biocompatibility. Despite recent advancements, the fabrication process of magnetic actuators and the reprogramming approach of their magnetization profiles continue to pose challenges. Here, a facile fabrication strategy is reported based on arrangements and distributions of reusable magnetic pixels on silicone substrates, allowing for various magnetic actuators with customizable architectures, arbitrary magnetization profiles, and integration of microfluidic technology. This approach enables intricate configurations with decent deformability and programmability, as well as biomimetic movements involving grasping, swimming, and wriggling in response to magnetic actuation. Moreover, microfluidic functional modules are integrated for various purposes, such as on/off valve control, curvature adjustment, fluid mixing, dynamic microfluidic architecture, and liquid delivery robot. The proposed method fulfills the requirements of low-cost, rapid, and simplified preparation of magnetic actuators, since it eliminates the need to sustain pre-defined deformations during the magnetization process or to employ laser heating or other stimulation for reprogramming the magnetization profile. Consequently, it is envisioned that magnetic actuators fabricated via pixel-assembly will have broad prospects in microfluidics and biomedical applications.

    Abstract This study aimed to address the issue of larger prediction errors existing in intelligent predictive tasks related to Alzheimer's disease (AD). A cohort of 487 enrolled participants was categorized into three groups: normal control (138 individuals), mild cognitive impairment (238 patients), and AD (111 patients) in this study. An improved multifeature squeeze-and-excitation-dilated residual network (MFSE-DRN) was proposed for two important AD predictions: clinical scores and conversion probability. The model was characterized as three modules: squeeze-and-excitation-dilated residual block (SE-DRB), multifusion pooling (MF-Pool), and multimodal feature fusion. To assess its performance, the proposed model was compared with two other novel models: ranking convolutional neural network (RCNN) and 3D vision geometrical group network (3D-VGGNet). Our method showed the best performance in the two AD predicted tasks. For the clinical scores prediction, the root-mean-square errors (RMSEs) and mean absolute errors (MAEs) of mini-mental state examination (MMSE) and AD assessment scale-cognitive 11-item (ADAS-11) were 1.97, 1.46 and 4.20, 3.19 within 6 months; 2.48, 1.69 and 4.81, 3.44 within 12 months; 2.67, 1.86 and 5.81, 3.83 within 24 months; 3.02, 2.03 and 5.09, 3.43 within 36 months, respectively. At the AD conversion probability prediction, the prediction accuracies within 12, 24, and 36 months reached to 88.0, 85.5, and 88.4%, respectively. The AD predication would play a great role in clinical applications.

    Abstract Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the triglyceride glucose (TyG) index and hyperuricemia (HUA) in patients with grades 1-3 hypertension.
    Results: The average TyG index was 8.71 ± 0.58. After adjusting for correlated variables, the logistic regression analysis revealed a positive correlation between the TyG index and HUA (OR = 1.83; 95% CI: 1.40-2.39). Smooth curve fitting showed that this correlation was linear in the whole range of the TyG index. In the subgroup analysis, the TyG index more strongly associated with HUA in the grades 1-2 hypertension group (OR = 2.22; 95% CI: 1.44-3.42) compared to that in the grade 3 hypertension group (OR = 1.58; 95% CI: 1.11-2.24;
    Conclusion: The TyG index was positively associated with HUA in patients with hypertension, and the association was more strongly confirmed in those with grades 1-2 hypertension rather than in those with grade 3 hypertension.

    Abstract Deep learning–based segmentation models usually require substantial data, and the model usually suffers from poor generalization due to the lack of training data and inefficient network structure. We proposed to combine the deformable model and medical transformer neural network on the image segmentation task to alleviate the aforementioned problems. The proposed method first employs a statistical shape model to generate simulated contours of the target object, and then the thin plate spline is applied to create a realistic texture. Finally, a medical transformer network was constructed to segment three types of medical images, including prostate MR image, heart US image, and tongue color images. The segmentation accuracy of the three tasks achieved 89.97%, 91.90%, and 94.25%, respectively. The experimental results show that the proposed method improves medical image segmentation performance.

    Abstract Cell mechanical properties provide a label-free marker for indicating cell states and disease processes. Although microfluidic deformability cytometry has demonstrated great potential and successes in mechanical phenotyping in recent years, its universal applicability for characterizing multiple sizes of cells using a single device has not been realized. Herein, we propose high-throughput adjustable deformability cytometry integrated with three-dimensional (3D) elasto-inertial focusing and a virtual fluidic channel. By properly adjusting the flow ratio of the sample and sheath, the virtual fluidic channel in a wide solid channel can generate a strong shear force in the normal direction of the flow velocity and simultaneously squeeze cells from both sides to induce significant cell deformation. The combination of elasto-inertial focusing and a virtual fluidic channel provides a great hydrodynamic symmetrical force for inducing significant and homogeneous cell deformation. In addition, our deformability cytometry system not only achieves rapid and precise cell deformation, but also allows the adjustable detection of multiple sizes of cells at a high throughput of up to 3000 cells per second. The mini-bilateral segmentation network (mini-BiSeNet) was developed to identify cells and extract features quickly. The classification of different cell populations (A549, MCF-7, MDA-MB-231, and WBCs) was carried out based on the cell size and deformation. By applying deep learning to cell classification, a high accuracy reaching approximately 90% was achieved. We also revealed the potential of our deformability cytometry for characterizing pleural effusions. The flexibility of our deformability cytometry holds promise for the mechanical phenotyping and detection of various biological samples.

    Abstract The cell membrane structure is closely related to the occurrence and progression of many metabolic bone diseases observed in the clinic and is an important target to the development of therapeutic strategies for these diseases. Strong experimental evidence supports the existence of membrane microdomains in osteoclasts (OCs). However, the potential membrane microdomains and the crucial mechanisms underlying their roles in OCs have not been fully characterized. Membrane microdomain components, such as scaffolding proteins and the actin cytoskeleton, as well as the roles of individual membrane proteins, need to be elucidated. In this review, we discuss the compositions and critical functions of membrane microdomains that determine the biological behavior of OCs through the three main stages of the OC life cycle.
