    Abstract Functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is an emerging neuroimaging tool that reflects the activity and function of brain neurons by monitoring changes in brain oxygen metabolism based on the neurovascular coupling mechanism. It is non-invasive and convenient, especially suitable for monitoring neonatal brain function. This article provides a comprehensive review of research related to the developmental patterns of brain networks concerning language, music, and emotions in neonates using fNIRS. It also covers brain network imaging in neonatal care, resting-state brain network connectivity patterns, and characteristics of brain functional imaging in disease states of neonates using fNIRS.

    Abstract Mutations in skeletal muscle α-actin (Acta1) cause myopathies. In a mouse model of congenital myopathy, heterozygous Acta1 (H40Y) knock-in (Acta1+/Ki) mice exhibit features of human nemaline myopathy, including premature lethality, severe muscle weakness, reduced mobility, and the presence of nemaline rods in muscle fibers. In this study, we investigated the impact of Acta1 (H40Y) mutation on the neuromuscular junction (NMJ). We found that the NMJs were markedly fragmented in Acta1+/Ki mice. Electrophysiological analysis revealed a decrease in amplitude but increase in frequency of miniature end-plate potential (mEPP) at the NMJs in Acta1+/Ki mice, compared with those in wild type (Acta1+/+) mice. Evoked end-plate potential (EPP) remained similar at the NMJs in Acta1+/Ki and Acta1+/+ mice, but quantal content was increased at the NMJs in Acta1+/Ki, compared with Acta1+/+ mice, suggesting a homeostatic compensation at the NMJs in Acta1+/Ki mice to maintain normal levels of neurotransmitter release. Furthermore, short-term synaptic plasticity of the NMJs was compromised in Acta1+/Ki mice. Together, these results demonstrate that skeletal Acta1 H40Y mutation, albeit muscle-origin, leads to both morphological and functional defects at the NMJ.

    Abstract Objective: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a broad term used to describe arthritis of unknown origin. JIA commonly persists into adulthood, often causing substantial morbidity such as restricted joint function, which can lead to challenges in employment and independence. This study aims to identify diagnostic biomarkers and investigate the role of immune cells in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid factor-negative polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (RF-negative pJIA) and oligoarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (oJIA).
    Methods: We retrieved a JIA dataset from the GEO database and conducted an analysis of differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Subsequently, functional enrichment analysis was performed on the DEGs. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) was utilized to identify key modules. Additionally, we constructed a protein‒protein interaction network to identify hub genes that serve as signature genes. Furthermore, we employed CIBERSORT to classify immune cell infiltration.
    Results: From the GSE20307 dataset, we identified a total of 1438 DEGs in RF-negative pJIA and 688 DEGs in oJIA. WGCNA clustered the data into 6 modules in pJIA and 4 modules in oJIA. Notably, the ME5 and ME2 modules exhibited significant associations with pJIA and oJIA, respectively. In both pJIA and oJIA, we identified six hub genes, four of which demonstrated high diagnostic sensitivity and specificity in pJIA, while five showed high diagnostic sensitivity and specificity in oJIA. CIBERSORT analysis suggested the potential involvement of these signature genes in immune cell infiltration.
    Conclusion: In this study, we identified JUN, CXCL8, SOCS3, and KRAS as biomarkers for RF-negative pJIA and JUN, CXCL8, SOCS3, PTGS2, and NFKBIA as biomarkers for oJIA. Furthermore, our findings suggest that Tfh cells may play a role in the early onset of both RF-negative pJIA and oJIA.

    Abstract This article reports the digestibility, antioxidant activity, and protein structure of treated egg white protein powder (EWP) after pretreatment with electron beam irradiation (EBI) at doses of 5‒100 kGy. The results revealed that EWP exhibited excellent in vitro digestibility under the tested EBI dose conditions. After EBI pretreatment, the treated EWP digestibility of the treated sample was slightly higher than that of the untreated sample. When EWP wais treated at 100 kGy EBI, the EWP in vitro digestibility was high, reaching up to (99.30 ± 0.53)%. The EWP digestion solution exhibited high antioxidation capacities of ABTS•+ radical scavenging activity (˃80%), Fe2+ chelation ability (˃70%), and •OH radical scavenging activity (~40%). Circular dichroism and fluorescence spectrum analyses indicated differences in the surface hydrophobicity and secondary structure of the EWP protein at the tested EBI doses. The protein peptides of the EWP digestion solution observed via sodium dodecyl-sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis were close to 25 kDa and 10 kDa. We believe that this study provides technical support for future practical applications of EBI in protein food-processing fields.

    Abstract Understanding the adverse effects of tunnel crossing active faults on tunnel structures is crucial for ensuring their safe operation and construction. This paper presents the results of a series of model tests conducted at a scale of 1:40 using a fault sliding test box. Three sets of fault comparison tests were carried out, namely: (1) the tunnel does not cross the fault, (2) the spring stiffness is reduced, and (3) the model is not reinforced. The objective was to study the failure characteristics of tunnels crossing active faults. The findings reveal that when the hanging wall moves downwards, cracks appear on the surrounding rock surface of the hanging wall, specifically above the tunnel lining crossing the fault. The lining is significantly damaged within the range of - 30-+ 30 cm. All points of axial force exhibit an increasing compression trend. The section of axial force and bending moment near the fault fracture surface is notably larger than that far from the fault fracture surface. The safety factor of the entire structure decreases sharply after dislocation, making the tunnel more susceptible to cracking at various locations such as the vault, arch waist, left and right arch feet, and inverted arch. It has been proven that the shear compression of the fracture surface during fault dislocation is the main cause of longitudinal through cracks in the lining. The use of springs with higher stiffness effectively ensures the reciprocating dislocation of the upper and foot walls, with long duration and large displacement, providing a better simulation of the dislocation of active faults.

    Abstract Background: Metastatic rectal cancer is an incurable malignancy, which is prone to early mortality. We aimed to establish nomograms for predicting the risk of early mortality in patients with metastatic rectal cancer.
    Methods: In this study, clinical data were obtained from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database.We utilized X-tile software to determine the optimal cut-off points of age and tumor size in diagnosis. Significant independent risk factors for all-cause and cancer-specific early mortality were determined by the univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses, then we construct two practical nomograms. In order to assess the predictive performance of nomograms, we performed calibration plots, time-dependent receiver-operating characteristic curve (ROC), decision curve analysis (DCA) and clinical impact curve (CIC).
    Results: A total of 2570 metastatic rectal cancer patients were included in the study. Multivariate logistic regression analyses revealed that age at diagnosis, CEA level, tumor size, surgical intervention, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and metastases to bone, brain, liver, and lung were independently associated with early mortality of metastatic rectal cancer patients in the training cohort. The area under the curve (AUC) values of nomograms for all-cause and cancer-specific early mortality were all higher than 0.700. Calibration curves indicated that the nomograms accurately predicted early mortality and exhibited excellent discrimination. DCA and CIC showed moderately positive net benefits.
    Conclusions: This study successfully generated applicable nomograms that predicted the high-risk early mortality of metastatic rectal cancer patients, which can assist clinicians in tailoring more effective treatment regimens.

    Abstract Delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is a common phenomenon that occurs following a sudden increase in exercise intensity or unfamiliar exercise, significantly affecting athletic performance and efficacy in athletes and fitness individuals. DOMS is characterized by allodynia and hyperalgesia, and their mechanisms remain unclear. Recent studies have reported that neurotrophic factors, such as nerve growth factor (NGF) and glial cell derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), are involved in the development and maintenance of DOMS. This article provides a review of the research progress on the signaling pathways related to the involvement of NGF and GDNF in DOMS, hoping to provide novel insights into the mechanisms underlying allodynia and hyperalgesia in DOMS, as well as potential targeted treatment.

    Abstract Purpose: To assess the effectiveness of autologous blood patch intraparenchymal injection during CT-guided lung biopsies with a focus on the incidence of pneumothorax and the subsequent requirement for chest tube placement.
    Methods: A comprehensive search of major databases was conducted to identify studies that utilized autologous blood patches to mitigate the risk of pneumothorax following lung biopsies. Efficacy was next assessed through a meta-analysis using a random-effects model.
    Results: Of the 122 carefully analyzed studies, nine, representing a patient population of 4116, were incorporated into the final analysis. Conclusion deduced showed a noteworthy reduction in the overall incidence of pneumothorax (RR = 0.65; 95% CI 0.53-0.80; P = 0.00) and a significantly decline in the occasion for chest tube placement due to pneumothorax (RR = 0.45; 95% CI 0.32-0.64; P = 0.00).
    Conclusions: Utilizing autologous blood patch intraparenchymal injection during the coaxial needle retraction process post-lung biopsy is highly effective in diminishing both the incidence of pneumothorax and consequent chest tube placement requirement.
