    Abstract Objective: To investigate the correlations between heart rate variability (HRV) and skin conductance (SC) in two populations under three different situations.
    Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled patients with somatic symptom disorder comorbid with depression and anxiety and healthy individuals without a psychiatric history. The biological signals were measured under three conditions: resting state, during a cognitive task and during paced breathing. Pearson's correlation analysis and the generalized estimating equation were used to examine the correlations between SC and HRV in the two populations under the three situations.
    Results: The study enrolled 97 patients with somatic symptom disorder comorbid with depression and anxiety and 96 healthy individuals. In healthy individuals, the ratio of low-frequency power to high frequency power (LF/HF) and normalized LF (LF%) were significantly correlated with SC in the resting state and during a cognitive task, but the correlation coefficients were low level. In patients with somatic symptom disorder comorbid with depression and anxiety, LF/HF and LF% did not show significant correlations with SC under any situation.
    Conclusions: The two different populations and three situations might have affected the significance of the LF/HF-SC and LF%-SC correlations. The generally low correlations indicate that LF/HF and LF% cannot fully reflect the sympathetic cholinergic activity represented by SC.

    Abstract Thoracic trauma often results in immediate or delayed hemorrhage. There are few cases of purulent pericarditis with pericardial tamponade reported in the literature. If a devastating complication develops several weeks following blunt thoracic trauma, the causal relationship with the thoracic trauma event is less evident. As such, accurate diagnosis and subsequent effective treatment implementation is likely to be delayed. Herein, we present the case of a 46-year-old male patient with delayed purulent pericarditis that led to cardiac tamponade 2 weeks after the initial trauma.

    Abstract This study presents a comprehensive assessment of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the blubber of a stranded blue whale found on the coast of Taiwan. The analysis included polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), Hexachlorobenzene (HCB), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). The whale exhibited evident signs of emaciation, including low body weight, reduced blubber fat content, and thin blubber thickness. The dominant fatty acid type detected in the blubber was short-chain monounsaturated fatty acids (SC-MUFA), known to aid in thermoregulation. Stable isotope ratios indicated that the blue whale occupied a lower trophic position compared to a fin whale, suggesting its proximity to krill habitats in the Southern Ocean for feeding. The average concentrations of DDTs (1089.2 ± 4.7 ng/g lw; ΣDDT) and PCBs (1057.1 ± 49.8 ng/g lw) in the blubber were almost one order of magnitude higher than PAHs (41.7 ± 10.0 ng/g lw), HCB (70.6 ± 2. ng/g lw), and PBDEs (7.2 ± 1.2 ng/g lw). Pollutant concentrations in this individual blue whale were comparable to levels found in Norway, higher than those found in Chile, and notably lower than those found in Canada and Mexico. Calculating the biomagnification factor (BMF) for the POPs from krill (Euphausia superba) to the blue whale revealed significant bioaccumulation of pollutants in this particular whale. Additional research is imperative to achieve a thorough comprehension of bioaccumulation of POPs and their potential toxicological impacts on whale health.

    Abstract Objective: This study evaluated the clinical efficacy and safety of interleukin-1 (IL-1) blockade for patients with COVID-19.
    Methods: The PubMed, Web of Science, Ovid Medline, Embase and Cochrane Library databases were searched for relevant articles from their inception to 25 September 2022. Only randomized clinical trials (RCTs) that assessed the clinical efficacy and safety of IL-1 blockade in the treatment of patients with COVID-19 were included.
    Results: This meta-analysis included seven RCTs. No significant difference in the all-cause mortality rate of patients with COVID-19 was observed between the IL-1 blockade and control groups (7.7 vs. 10.5%, odds ratio [OR] = 0.83, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.57-1.22;
    Conclusions: IL-1 blockade does not provide increased survival benefits in hospitalized patients with COVID-19, but it may reduce the need for MV. Furthermore, it is a safe agent for use in the treatment of COVID-19.>.

    Abstract The impacts of landscape pattern on water quality of streams are intricate and influenced by spatiotemporal scales. Untangling the interactions between landscapes and water, and identifying the pivotal indicators that drive spatial and temporal changes in nutrient dynamics, are essential steps towards facilitating sustainable water resource management. This study explored the relationship between landscape patterns and annual and seasonal (wet and dry seasons) exports of major cations (Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+) and anions (Cl-, SO42-, NO3-N, and PO4-P) in 43 watersheds across subtropical mountainous regions of Taiwan during the 2015–2016 period. Multiple stepwise regression models were constructed to elucidate the crucial landscape variables influencing variations in stream ion exports across different time scales, and spatial extent, ranging from watershed to various riparian buffer widths (100, 200, 500, 1000, 1500, and 2000 m). The findings indicated that the buffer width of 200 m emerged as the optimal scale for illustrating the connections between landscape patterns and water chemistry, outperforming larger scales. Nevertheless, there were minor deviations in the optimal scale for Na+ and Cl- (ranging from 100 to 500 m). Landscape-level configuration metrics (PD [patch density], CONTAG [Contagion], and IJI [Interspersion and Juxtaposition]) played a significant role in explaining the majority of data variations in cations. This suggest that overall landscape fragmentation tends to enhance cations exports, regardless of land cover types. On the contrary, class-level configuration metrics (EDBUD [edge density of buildup], PDBAR [patch density of bareland], and IJIAGR [Interspersion and Juxtaposition of agriculture]) played a primary role in interpreting data variations of anions. This indicated that the configurations of specific land cover types, such as buildup, agriculture and bareland, are the primary factors influencing anion exports. Furthermore, the regression models exhibited robust performance during ...
