Abstract The objective of this work was to determine concentrations of extractives and total lignin along with their radial and longitudinal variations in wood from a clone of Eucalyptus grandis W.Hill ex Maiden x Eucalyptus urophylla S. T. Blake at age six years. Longitudinal samples were taken at 2%, 10%, 30% and 70% of the commercial height of trees, and radial samples were taken from each longitudinal position, the number of samples depending on the diameter of each disk. Results led to the conclusion that, overall, concentrations of extractives and total lignin in the wood tended to decrease with increasing distance from the pith and tended to increase in portions closer to the tree base.

Abstract Probing the Earth’s inner core (IC), accounting for just about 1% of the Earth’s volume, is critical for understanding the planet’s formation and evolution. However, geophysical inferences have been challenging due to the lack of seismological probes sensitive to the IC, especially its shear properties. The utilization of late earthquake records, the coda, has made a profound breakthrough in structural seismology, including studying the Earth’s and deep planetary interiors. More significantly, it has initiated a new theoretical and practical framework, the global correlation wavefield, to better understand the architecture of the late coda and place novel constraints on IC structures. The global correlation wavefield has resulted in a robust detection of shear waves (i.e., J waves) propagating through the IC, expressed through the I2-PKJKP feature. Here, we will present a new set of IC shear-wave-sensitive correlation features, which have recently become observable thanks to the latest advancement in the correlation wavefield theory. Interestingly, one of the newly studied features is sensitive exclusively to the IC shear-wave speed and minimally influenced by uncertainties in the crust, mantle, and outer core velocity models. Moreover, inspired by the clear expression of late coda correlation features, we scrutinize the late hours of the direct coda wavefield and show unprecedented observation of up-to-fivefold reverberating waves along the Earth’s diameters. The travel time measurements from the observations strengthen the evidence for the ~650-km-radius innermost inner core (IMIC), which has distinct anisotropic properties from the IC’s outer layer.

Abstract The present work consists of a numerical study of the dynamics of irrational polygonal billiards. Our contribution reinforces the hypothesis that these systems can be strongly mixing, although never demonstrably chaotic, and discusses the role of rotational symmetries on the billiards boundaries. We introduce a biparametric polygonal billiard family with only C_{n} rotational symmetries. Initially, we calculate through the relative measure r(ℓ,θ;t) the phase space filling. This is done for some integer values of n and for a plane of parameters ℓ×θ. From the resulting phase diagram, we can identify the fully ergodic systems. The numerical evidence that symmetrical polygonal billiards can be strongly mixing is obtained by evaluating the position autocorrelation function Cor_{x}(t), which follows a power-law-type decay t^{-σ}. The strongly mixing property is indicated by σ=1. For odd, small values of n, the exponent σ≃1 is found. On the other hand, σ<1 (weakly mixing cases) for small, even values of n. Intermediate n values present σ≃1 independently of parity. For larger values of symmetry parameter n, the biparametric family tends to be a circular billiard (integrable case). For such values of n, we identified even less ergodic behavior at the pace at which n increases and σ decreases.

Abstract The current study aimed to obtain dose conversion coefficients for marine animals due to an oil spill accident using two variables: crude oil activity concentration and organism depth. Thorium series presented a dose contribution twice that uranium series for similar conditions. Bi-214 and Tl-208 stood out for delivering a higher dose rate for uranium and thorium series, respectively. Results obtained can be used to assess the maximum exposure time for emergency oil control, removal, and mitigation in an oil spill accident.
