Abstract We tested whether the milk yield capacity of mixed-breed goats on a Chihuahuan desert rangeland in northern Mexico during the dry season affects milk composition, body weight gain, and weaning weight of their progeny. Milk yield and composition, and progeny postnatal growth performance, were recorded weekly. One week after kidding, mixed-breed goats (a mixture of Criollo × dairy breeds; n = 40) were allotted into medium (MP) or low (LP) milk yielding groups (20 goats per group). Mean 105-d total milk yield for MP and LP goats was 45.2 ± 12.5 and 20.7 ± 5.2 L, respectively. Milk lactose (4.3 vs. 4.2%) and solids-non-fat (SNF; 8.2 vs. 8.0) differed (

Milk lactose (4.3 vs. 4.2%) and solids-non-fat (SNF; 8.2 vs. 8.0) differed ( p < 0.05) between MP and LP goats; milk protein content tended to differ ( p = 0.08) between MP and LP goats with no difference for milk fat content ( p > 0.05). Maternal body weight was positively associated with milk yield, milk lactose, and SNF content ( p < 0.05 to p < 0.001). Goats giving birth to males produce more milk than goats giving birth to females, but milk fat percentage was higher in goats bearing females ( p < 0.001). Milk yield and composition throughout lactation did not influence body weight gain (47.8 vs. 48.7 g/day for kids from MP and LP goats) and weaning weight (6.7 vs. 6.7 kg from MP and LP goats) of the offspring ( p > 0.05). Birth weight and weaning weight of the progeny were positively related to maternal body weight ( p ≤ 0.05). The postnatal growth of the kids was reduced, extending the time to reach market weight. Nevertheless, non-supplemented mixed-breed goats reared on semi-arid rangeland of northern Mexico have the potential for moderate milk production. Therefore, due to the limited nutrients ingested by grazing goats during the dry season, a nutritional supplement is necessary to keep up milk production and adequate growth of kids.

Abstract Recent studies have been evaluating the presence of patterns associated with the occurrence of cancer in different types of tissue present in the individual affected by the disease. In this article, we describe preliminary results for the automatic detection of cancer (Walker 256 tumor) in laboratory animals using preclinical microphotograph images of the subject’s liver tissue. In the proposed approach, two different types of descriptors were explored to capture texture properties from the images, and we also evaluated the complementarity between them. The first texture descriptor experimented is the widely known Local Phase Quantization (LPQ), which is a descriptor based on spectral information. The second one is built by the application of a granulometry given by a family of morphological filters. For classification, we have evaluated the algorithms Support Vector Machine (SVM), k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN) and Logistic Regression. Experiments carried out on a carefully curated dataset developed by the Enteric Neural Plasticity Laboratory of the State University of Maringá showed that both texture descriptors provide good results in this scenario. The accuracy rates obtained using the SVM classifier were 96.67% for the texture operator based on granulometry and 91.16% for the LPQ operator. The dataset was made available also as a contribution of this work. In addition, it is important to remark that the best overall result was obtained by combining classifiers created using both descriptors in a late fusion strategy, achieving an accuracy of 99.16%. The results obtained show that it is possible to automatically perform the identification of cancer in laboratory animals by exploring texture properties found on the tissue taken from the liver. Moreover, we observed a high level of complementarity between the classifiers created using LPQ and granulometry properties in the application addressed here.

Abstract Integrated crop-livestock systems (ICLS) in paddies are an important strategy to reduce fertilizer requirements of rice (Oryza sativa). Legume crop rotations and fertilization increase soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) availability compared to rice monocropping. Our objectives were to evaluate the effects of fertilization, namely P and K, in no-till ICLS of continuously flooded rice and rice-soybean rotation in subtropical paddy fields on: (i) soil microbial community, (ii) labile C and N pools, (iii) microbial groups, and (iv) rice yield. Both ICLS were annual ryegrass pastures under beef cattle grazing during the winter season without tillage. Although flooded rice yield did not respond to P and K fertilization in either ICLS, P and K fertilization increased microbial biomass C and N content, and permanganate-oxidizable C (POxC) by 37%, 36%, and 42%, respectively, in both production systems, due to alleviation of nutrient limitation for microbial growth. ICLS under soybean-rice rotation had higher C availability and 22.4% higher rice yield than the rice monocropping. Positive relationships were observed between microbial biomass N and Gram-positive (G+; R² = 0.61), Gram-negative (G-; R² = 0.54) bacteria, and saprophytic fungi (R² = 0.45). However, total fungi was almost 10 times lower than the PLFA of total bacteria on average of cropping systems. G+ bacteria were the only microbial group correlated with N availability under flooded rice. We conclude that P and K fertilization has a direct impact on the microbial community and biomass and consequently on the C and N availability, but does not increase rice yield under no-till ICLS. Soybean-rice rotation yields more than rice monocropping system under ICLS and soil bacteria are more sensitive than saprophytic fungi to changes in soil nutrient status during flooding period in paddy fields.
